39 Rue de Jean - Charleston
We offer a modified menu from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
First rate as always. Outstanding food (in a wide range), excellent service.
Chris was great!!! We were celebrating our 26th anniversary, and Chris brought us complementary champagne, it was wonderful! Had the mussels for appetizer EXCELLENT!!!! Baguette was delicious, my husband had the duck, and I had the crab cakes. Ended with Creme brûlée! WONDERFUL!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
This is my third time here. We drove from Raleigh the second time and the food wasn’t as good as the first time. However, on the third trip down it was just like the first visit. Looking forward to another visit in the future.
Delicious food, great service, dog friendly on the exterior patio
Excellent rabbit and the desert was excellent as well. Service wasn't as attentive as I thought they should be, but still very good!
OUTSTANDING! 3rd time here and never a disappointment! Excellent food, wine, cocktails, service.
Excellent food, make sure you are not seated out the back by the toilets as it is somewhat divorced from the main restaurant.
We had a trainee for our waiter, Scott Tallman, and he was so attentive. Provided a fantastic experience. The braised rabbit was divine and the filet was fantastic. Brooke Albea also stopped by our table, so sweet and very knowledgeable (she recommended the rabbit). We will def be back. Delicious!!! Good luck Scott with your training!!!🤣🤣
Exceptionally good service, food and wine. The creme brulee to finish the meal was enough for four and the timing was perfect as we were right on time for our Gaillard event.
Three couples tried out 39 Rue de Jean this past Saturday. We are all fairly new residents of the Charleston area and slowly working our way through the amazing food scene here in the Holy City. I would say that overall 39 Rue de Jean was a pleasant evening but that it was only about average for this vibrant city at best. While the food was good but not great (we ordered trout, steak frites, short ribs) the noise level was very loud, the service average and the prices a bit high for the quality of the meals. My personal favorite was the French Onion Soup which was excellent but unfortunately was the highlight of the meal that followed. Would I go back? Yes, possibly, but with so many other more impressive choices across the city, it won't be any time soon.
You can always count on great food and service at 39 Rue de Jean. We sat outside on their porch and it was a delightful evening. Fun to watch all the people passing by in the alley way next to their porch. People watching is a good sport!
Bar drinks were not that good. Onion soup was good. Duck confit wasn't very good - very salty, not enough contrasts in tastes and textures. Bread was stale. Server was not very familiar with the dishes themselves.
Classic brasserie, easy to enjoy. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Good food in a more casual setting. Right across from visitor’s center. It was exactly what we were looking for.
Very good French cuisine in a cozy and warm atmosphere
Ate outside and there were flies around the tables
Great food, subpar service. We had a reservation but our table wasn't ready. The bar was packed, so it took a while to get a drink. Once we were seated, our server took 10 minutes to speak to us.
Rue is usually a go to for us and a 5 star experience. This experience was still good but not up to the restaurant’s normal quality - in food or service. Again, it wasn’t bad but is normally better.
We really enjoy this restaurant. We have dined here once before and the waiter was very rude but this time, our server Molly was wonderful. We will be back.
Not a relaxed atmosphere, food served too fast, food quality did not match price.
Great choices on the menu. Attentive and helpful service. Food quality always good.
Always a great meal and time!
WAITRESS WAS VERY NICE, SHE HAD NO HELPSO DRINKS AND FOOD WAS SLOW, AND FOOD WAS TERRIBLE
Wonderful French cuisine. I had the duck breast special which was very good and followed with the Pot of Chocolate. You cannot go wrong here if you like French food.
Went to an event at CHS Music Hall afterwards.
nice French atmosphere, food was under done, sent it back, arrived back quickly. otherwise uneventful. Wine list was nice
The food was really good. Cooked just right and served with the perfect sauces. We went on a Monday night so the restaurant was not crowded. We expected really good service since our waitress only had two tables. But the service was poor.
What a wonderful stop for a late lunch. You'll feel like you are in a French Bistro. We had the mussels, a mesculun salad, great bread, and bottle of wine. A go to place when we visit Charleston.
Overall, 39 Rue de Jean is a very pleasant restaurant with quite good quality food. I had escargot and moules marinières. The moules were cooked correctly, not overdone. We ate outside, which was a bit drab- indoors looked to have more ambience. Overall, I would eat here again.
Another great meal. Never disappointed.
Had such a great brunch, amazing crepes and a great outdoor cafe setting
We have dined here a number of times and consistently had a great experience. We enjoyed the Sun brunch on 22 Sept seated outside. The service was great, the food and bloodies were outstanding! We would highly recommend dining here and have it on our top 10 list in Charleston, Mount Pleasant, IOP, Sullivan's Isle, etc.!
Wonderful brunch on the covered (and dog friendly) patio! Top-notch service and a delicious, affordable menu. Can't wait to go back!
Pretty good food. Nothing crazy. Waiter was super cool.
Dining Room did not happen to be busy in the night we were there. The waiter did not acknowledge our table for 10 min and we had to get his attention to get our drinks and bread. He forgot some drinks that were ordered for some in our party. The quality of service was not of the quality that we were expecting. Also, I had checked in for our reservation about 30 min early with the hostess(es) and told them we were at the bar and to please come get us when the table was ready and we would be available if the table was ready early. Like I said, the dining room looked more empty than expected and the hostess(es) never came to retrieve us and I had to check up after the time of our reservation.
I have been to this restaurant before, about a year and a half ago. I can certainly say that something must have changed for the worse unfortunately. Based on my experience I could not justify going back again. The food was good, not amazing (and honestly not quite up to the Charleston standard I’m used to) and some items were clunky. Dishes were served plated messily and the food itself lacked finesse and didn’t seem like very coherent courses (ex. the appetizers were heavy and unable to be finished). I was seated in the back directly by the restroom doors (very uncommon) and the service was very slow. My drink was forgotten and I had to ask for it, and when who I assume was the manager came to apologize he made an unnecessarily snarky comment about our waitress’s competence. She was very nice and I don’t blame her, I could just tell that the restaurant’s standards were not where they should have been. Overall I was vaguely disappointed.
Get the mussels!!!
We always stop at Rue when we come to Charleston. This time, we were celebrating my 30th birthday and the staff did not disappoint! Everyone was so kind and made the experience unforgettable. As always, the food was exquisite and the wine delicious!
Excellent service from our waitress. Food was as very good.
