39 Rue de Jean - Charleston
We offer a modified menu from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
Excellent—our first trip to CHS in over 10 years. Always a favorite—still great.
We dressed up thinking we should, because sounded like an upscale restaurant. Well, we are fine with casual dress especially when we are tourists, but when people were allowed in for evening dinner with shorts and t-shirts with holes in the back, that kind of ruined our experience.
Location near visitors center is excellent. Food is also excellent especially the potato soup, the mussels and the bread. The restaurant can be noisy so I would recommend eating at non peak hours if you want a quiet atmosphere. The wait staff is the best in Charleston. Do not miss a meal here.
Our service was excellent, attentive and non-intrusive. Especially enjoyed the birthday crème brulee for my friend and surprised with one for me! Will definitely be back and gladly recommend to friends.
Our server, Bryson was fabulous! We was very attentive and overall pleasant.
Some of the best food I’ve had in Charleston and I’ve been to hundreds. Service by Edward was spot on and fun. Highly recommend the mussels.
2nd visit. Service nothing close to first time. Lucky to see waitress a few times. Duck Omelette fantastic. Charleston Omelette not as good- bland hollandaise sauce.
Outstanding from the time we stepped in the door. We were 30 minutes early on Valentines weekend and they seated us right away. The service was 5 stars, and we never had to ask for anything. Our waiter was great, also very personable, and took care of all our wants and needs in a timely mannor. The food was over the top and was reasonably priced. We have been married for 51 years and this experience ranked in our top 5 ever.
Best food, best ambiance
One of our favorite restaurants, we always make a point to eat there if we are in town. Food is devine, great wine list and we have always had great service.
The service was great and our waiter was very friendly and helpful! It was Valentine’s Day And Sewe weekend so we expected a busy night, but the staff handled the crowd well. The food was killer and we had a blast! Highly recommended.
The food is always good but my particular favorites are the mussels with pistou sauce. Ask for extra bread to sop it up. Also, the steak au poivre is sensational with the pomme frites.
Service is fabulous!
Great food, service, will go back again
Wonderful food as always! Disappointed that they did not disclose they served a limited menu in the early evening. That said, the food was very good and the deserts incredible!
We love this restaurant. The entree was good but not as perfectly interesting and atmosphere not as refined as in some visits we’ve had in the past, but very good and we will come back.
Table in the middle of room with guests literally screaming to each other. Each interaction was cringe worthy and we were at least 15 feet away. A manager should have asked them to quiet down.
Menu descriptions are minimal.
Ordered Filet Mignon (MR) came out Very Rare. Also comes with a sauce (not described on menu) which was awful and does nothing for the dish.
Thanks for taking a moment to share. We strive to maintain our high standards for guest to enjoy a level of dining and hospitality. I apologize that we failed to address your noisy neighbors, and understand that our acoustics can sometimes work against us. We'd love for you to come back & enjoy the experience you deserve. Feel free to contact me directly so that I can ensure your next visit lives up to our hospitality standards. Shannon Doherty General Manager, 39 Rue De Jean
Delicious food, friendly staff. Our waiter Edward made recommendations on the wines to complement our entrees and went out of his way to make sure our dining experience was perfect from appetizer to dessert.
Great food choices, well presented and cooked to perfection. Service attentive. What more could you want!
Just got to Charleston and Rue De Jean is one of our all-time favorites. We know bouillabaisse night is Sunday night. Everything was as good as it always been
Bouillabaisse is excellent! Waiter, Mike, very attentive but not intrusive..great!
Whatever that chocolate and orange dessert was called, I call it out of this world delicious!
The mussels were absolutely amazing, highly recommend.
We love Rue De jean. We go to Charleston about once a year and a visit to this place is always on out list. The food was delicious and the atmosphere and service was great!
Loved it. Food delish. Service outstanding. Great overall dining experience
We had a great time! The food, especially the muscles, was excellent and the service was perfect.
The food was absolutely wonderful..already planning my next visit!
The ambience is good. The bar is good. The location is convenient. We have been to the restaurant several times before. This time was for lunch. We both had quiche and it was just okay.
We were a party of 8 and when we got there , they did not have the update number of guests and had to wait a decent amount of time to be seated even though the table was ready . The server took forever to come to us and seemed annoyed to have a big party . The mussels which are usually
My favorite were a miss and the noise level was so loud . Also very small wine pours .
We appreciate feedback & intend to address these issues. I apologize about the miscommunication in regards to your guest count, that you had to wait a few extra minutes to be seated. We do have a few tables that are not affected so much by the loud acoustics, please make note in your next reservation, we will happily accommodate. Love that you typically love our mussels. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly so that I may personally handle your reservations. Shannon Doherty, GM
We enjoyed the escargot and the crab cocktail for our appetizer and shared an order of chicken francese. All bites were outstanding and waitstaff were cordial and mindful of our need to attend a nearby performance. The bread is worth the indulgence!
In town for a long weekend. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable. The ambiance was shabby southern chic. The food (duck confit and scallops) was amazing! If I’m ever back in Charleston, I will definitely go back!
The food is consistently good here. It has been one of my top three favorite local restaurants for years. We go for special occasions and for a casual night out in Charleston.
Potato soup was too salty, scallops were too dry, restaurant was too noisy.
Late lunch on a Saturday after a magic show. Server was great and so was the food. I had the plate special, others had the mussels and kids menu. We are locals and come here occasionally. This was the best visit to date. Definitely recommend coming during non-peak. We were here around 2:30. Didn’t really need to have dinner later!!!
Rue de Jean is one of our go-to restaurants when we're entertaining job candidates---to make them really want to come to Charleston. As always, everything was great. Personal recommendations: the cheese plate is a perfect appetizer for three, and the salmon is the best I've ever had anywhere. But if you can, go on a Tuesday---their Breton-style pork chop is unbelievably good, but is only available as the special on Tuesdays.
Our table had a fantastic brunch. We had a little of everything e.g. mussels, escargot, salmon, sushi. Bread was awesome - we could not get enough. Service was excellent!
We loved the ambience as soon as we entered the restaurant! Our server was Molly, and not only was she upbeat and friendly, she knew that menu inside and out. She easily helped us make choices when we were unsure, and when I didn’t care for the first few sips of my wine, she whisked it away and brought me something new that she recommended. That was perfect!
We absolutely loved the escargots and the amazing mussels! My date then had the rabbit which was fantastic, and I had the scallops which were a little disappointing, mostly due to the “sauce“ that was awfully thick and not the perfect pairing with the bivalves; however, they were sautéed quite nicely and presented beautifully. Overall, we had a wonderful time, and can’t wait to return next time we head to Charleston from coastal Virginia!
We've been coming to Rue de Jean for 30 years, love the atmosphere, service, menu and quality of the food. All very good to excellent. The atmosphere is nice, but could use a little freshening at some point.
Raw mussels, overcooked trout. Not a good evening from the kitchen
I have never been disappointed at Rue de Jean. Wonderful food & service.
We had a fabulous dinner, celebrating our daughter’s birthday. Our server, Cassandra, was a delight! She knew the foods well, was efficient, and made everything about our meal special. Rue de Jean never disappoints!!!
