39 Rue de Jean - Charleston
Poor service ruined the experience. Food was good but seemed expensive.
Everyone was just amazing as always. Then new general manager and I forgot his name so sorry he was just the nicest person ever
Have dined here many times In the past over the years when I was in town. Always my go to place for lunch or brunch when downtown. Looked forward to a nice lunch, but was a bit off from previous experiences. Hopefully this was just a one time issue w the quality of the food.
Just wonderful our go to place .we love it❤️
Get the mussels (moules) with garlic and traditional broth. Keep some bread for dipping. This is the best we've had anywhere. My wife's swordfish, cooked medium per chef's recommendation, was outstanding. We swapped bites. Reasonably priced and available when many of the more famous restaurants are sold out. This will be a first Charleston pick in the future.
The filet mignon was excellent but the Moroccan lamb was just mediocre and a small serving. The tables are very close to one another so if you're not talking, you hear the conversations around you. We were there at 5:45 on a Thursday so the service should have been good but after an initial contact from our waitress, we waited another 20 min. and finally had to have the hostess send someone so we could order. The hostess was dressed far too casually for this high-priced restaurant (jeans and a sweater). This tried-and-true restaurant is slipping.
Husband’s birthday dinner for his favorite- Rue de Jean moules et frites (mussels & French fries). The mussels & our Mesclun salad were exceptionally good this visit. Not too much dressing on salad, tender, large PEI mussels. The baguette was warm from the oven & didn’t even need the accompanying butter to melt in your mouth. Drinks were generous pours. Great experience which will have us returning when a yen for moules reappears as it frequently does!. Our server, Sydney, was snappy, upbeat & efficient. We appreciated her humor. I’m sure the noise level would rise for later diners. We were early birds this time.
I really want to like this place since it is a Charleston institution, but I think it could be better.
Our hostess was unsmiling and surly. Our waiter was great. The food was good, not great. My friend ordered a glass of champagne (and this IS a French restaurant), but she was brought a split of Prosecco. I believe my champagne cocktail was also made with Prosecco; too sweet.
The french onion soup was delicious. Stick with that!
Food was prepared very nicely; thus, would recommend. Hostess seated us near the bar, the very noisiest of a very noisy room. Be prepared for noise!
Very nice meal however the waiter ( his name was Chris)did not enhance the experience at all. Was not trained well - interrupted our conversation every time he came to the table instead of waiting for us to look up. He meant well and was pleasant but it’s annoying to have a waiter talk over you before he’s even gotten to the table.
True French cuisine in a very French surrounding. Excellent menu with a 'Plat du Jour'. Authentic preparations and taste made this a special and moemorable evening. Attentive waiter added to the enjoyment although this trait was not typically French!! Definitely a place 'au retour' in Charleston
Excellent dinner with great service.
Rue de Jean has been a stalwart of the north King Street area for years. I’m happy to report it is still a wonderful restaurant with great food and a wonderful ambience. The braised short rib was savory and delicious. The burger is second to none. The beet salad was really good too.
They were completely overbooked and tried to put us at a tiny table in the bar. We requested a change as we did have a reservation and the said they were overbooked, which was obvious by the huge crowd standing in the doorway for their tables. We left and ate elsewhere. Terrible all around.
First time. Great experience celebrating our daughter’s birthday.
They sat us at a table way too small to eat at in the bar and we had reservations five days in advance. The same thing happened to a couple next to us and they left.
Outstanding food and service. One of the finest French restaurants in the country. I'd go back in a heartbeat. However, the noise level is one of the worst ever. You'll need earplugs.
Our group of ten came here for dinner. The service was excellent, and the food was fabulous. My friends raved about the mussels. The desserts were also fantastic. If we are ever back in Charleston, we will definitely be back.
Very good food- French Onion soup was outstanding, Coq du Vin very good. We had a 5:30ish reservation and that went well but by the time we left at 7:30 it had gotten crazy loud in there. Go early if you want to talk to your table mates!
Our lunch started with the soup de jour of delicious black bean soup followed with the BEET-CURED GRAVLAX SALMON sandwich and FRISÉE LYONNAISE salad, both were tasty and satisfying. Unfortunately, the waiter wasn’t well trained and mixed up the orders which delayed service. Other then that we enjoyed our experience. Charleston is a town with many high caliber restaurants, with a bit more effort this one could rise above average.
We were very disappointed to learn that during our 11:30am brunch reservation they were not serving brunch (they only do brunch on Sundays?? This was not on the menu anywhere and I didn't see it on the website, although I wasn't searching for it--just assumed if they have a brunch menu, they'd serve Saturday brunch)
Generous portions and delicious food for our Bachelorette lunch. Convenient location. Yum!
The restaurant was great, however they refused to honor my Dining Rewards points.
Server was very attentive to our party of 6 people and the food was pleasing to the eye as well as tasty.
everything was wonderful. every time we come for lunch food service and drinks are great. best onion soup in the history of onion soup. it was my girlfriends birthday and she was so happy with everything. what a wonderful server we had. thank you so much.
The Best food....best service.....great surroundings!
9 boys on Spring Break. Perfect place’
We had a fantastic dining experience. The food was phenomenal and priced very reasonably, service was great. I feel like we had close to the fine dining experience without paying top dollars for it. Our server Chris was very attentive to all our needs. We definitely will be back if we are ever back in town.
Food and service all very good. Wait time for food was longer than expected.
We will miss Harvey!
I was in town meeting old friends. Our waiter was fantastic! So fun!
Great food, great location, great staff, enjoy the outside seating to avoid noise.
Awesome service! Amazing
Lovely and delicious
Lovely lunch, seated outside. Waitress was helpful and professional. Beef Bourgenon was well prepared and tasty. Poached pear exceptional. Second visit in 2 days.
Overall the food was good. With exception of salads that had too much dressing on them. Replaced with dressing on the side. Biggest concern was the service was slow. Noticed shrimp cocktails sitting station ready to be delivered but did not receive for several minutes. The short ribs were excellent
Very nice. Food very good. A little noisy.
Excellent meal, lovely outside table, waitress Madison was exceptional. Thoroughly enjoyed our entrées of short ribs and salmon. Desserts were very tasty, everything presented beautifully. Will return again.
Great place for casual dinner on the patio before event at the music hall
