About 31 Club
Seated at the corner of South Elmwood and North Johnson Park, the 31 Club is one of Buffalo's finest restaurants located right in the downtown area. From the swanky bar, to the spacious dining and private banquet rooms, a classic name made famous in the 1940s returns to its original, rightful home with a fresh, fashionable face. With a historic background that pre-dates the 1900's 31 Club was the first mayor of Buffalo's home, Ebenezer Johnson served as mayor from May 1832 - March 1833 and then again from 1834 - 1835. His home was known as Johnson Cottage and was a well known place for socializing. Today 31 Club carries on the tradition as a hot spot for who's who in the city and is one of the best places to eat, drink and be seen.

31 Club Ratings and Reviews
Live entertainment is outstanding. Dolly Dee is a local gem and brings in customers... And keeps them there dancing, drinking, (responsibly), and having fun. The bar crowd continues to grow even after the dinner hour. It hearkens back to the elegance of a fine dinner club.
Service is a problem though. It doesn't match the vibe or the price you'll pay for fine dining. Hostesses and bartenders, and bar help, don't understand the basics of fine dining (or even greasy spoon diner) hospitality and are a rough spot in the otherwise friendly Buffalo scene. It's pervasive. I literally felt uninvited to spend my $150+ on a not-so-inexpensive dinner and drinks. Only our waiter saved the day, once he got there 20 minutes later. Fix the service or the customers won't return.
Hadn’t been to the restaurant in a few years. Went with another couple on 2/17/18. Great bar area but dining was a disappointment. My sea bass was over cooked and served with carrots which did not go well. Others ordered filet with bearnaise sauce which was very sour and ruined the $45 steak.
Also the music was terrible. 70’s easy listening all night. Dying flowers on the table. And finally we got a solid waft of cigarette smoke and cold air as smokers came in and out side door. Ugh. Will not be back.
The experience was not what I had expected for a special Valentine’s Day date night. First off, being that this is a high-end restaurant, I would’ve expected my reservation time to be adhered to. We had 8pm reservations, and were not sat until 8:30pm. We were told the table wasn’t clean yet... I work in a restaurant. It doesn’t take 30 minutes to clean a table. Secondly, I asked what the vegetarian options were for the Valentine’s Day menu. I was told they were the beet gnocchi and the Caesar salad. Sounds good, I thought myself. I then look at the menu, and realize there’s “Parma ham” in the beet gnocchi. When my server came over, I questioned why he told me this was vegetarian and there’s ham in it? He had nothing to say besides that’s what the chef told him. Okay, hold the ham, maybe the rest of the night will go okay. My boyfriend and I both ordered Caesar salads. As small of a detail this is, it mattered. His salad was brought with cheese and mine was not. After realizing this, I asked where the cheese was on mine, the server told me they were out. Again, small detail, and I wouldn’t have been mad... but he didn’t even warn me about the cheese? He just brought the salad assuming what? That I wouldn’t notice my salad is missing a main ingredient? Ridiculous. Overall, the experience was not worth the money, and I will not be returning.
Valentine's day dinner reservation for 6:45 pm. Waited in the bar approximately 25 minutes for the table we wanted next to the fireplace. Excellent cocktails at the bar. Excellent table service and food. The filet and porkchop were prepared and served in a very traditional style, and were cooked exactly how we ordered them. Sides and desserts were also really good. Strolling violonist added to the ambience. Overall a very enjoyable Valentine's experience, as we have had here in the past. Have been here several times. Never disappointed. The hostess could have used an assistant, she was seating patrons, checking coats, etc, and it took a few minutes to retrieve our coats. A very minor quibble that did not mar our excellent experience.
This was our first visit to 31 Club. We went for Valentines Day (but on 2/13, since 2/14 was Ash Wednesday this year). We truly enjoyed the ambience, and there were several quiet, cozy rooms with tables, and several huge booths, to sit in for a romantic evening. The Cajun Spring Rolls we had for an appetizer were incredible, even for those like us, who do not do well with spicy foods - these had just the right amount of "kick" without leaving a "heated" aftertaste. The prix fixe 3-course meal was a nice option, with a special dessert that the new chef came up with -- a chocolate mousse with shaved chocolate folded in for a slight "crunchy" texture (AWESOME FLAVOR! And yet, a VERY LIGHT dessert!). I had the pork loin chop, which was probably the most tender, flavorful pork I had ever enjoyed at a restaurant. My wife also loved the chicken milanese she ordered. We had a friendly, patient waitress who fielded all our many questions about the menu and gave us several spot-on recommendations for us first-timers. Well worth the price. Be ready, however, for about a 2-hour meal (but well worth the wait!) We will definitely be back!
We went there after a Shea’s matinee on Sunday. Had a 530 reservation. Got there @ 520 & was asked to go to the bar where there was no bartender. Several minutes later a bartender/server arrived and took the order of the couple next to us. The gentleman ordered a Sidecar to which the bartender/server responded “I’m sorry. I don’t know how to make that and I don’t have time to look it up”. The gentleman then ordered another drink which the bar did not have. Third try he got his drink. At 540 we asked if our table was ready & was advised it would be a moment. Meanwhile, a family of 5 that had been waiting at the bar before we’d arrived was also getting antsy & went to ask when they would be sat. We finally got a table & had to wait again for the server. Side note: There was a relatively busy restaurant being handled by 1 host, 1 bartender/server, and 1 server. When the server arrived he stated that the specials card in the menu was wrong & that only 1 entree was featured. Additional side note: Brian, our server, who was singlehandedly handling many/all of the tables, was fantastic & absolutely did his best. If not for his level of service, we’d have walked out. The food was bland & mediocre (veal saltimbocca was over cooked and the chicken Milanese was a fried chicken breast with arugula & capers sprinkled over top). Thankfully we had a Groupon which lessened the pain considerably. Had we had to pay full price we would’ve requested the manager, however none appeared to be on staff so who knows what would’ve happened. Will not be visiting this restaurant again.
One of the best dinners we have had in while. Carefuly prepared. High quality fresh seafood. We dine out every Friday and Saturday. We have tried most high restaurants in Buffalo. Tempo, Oliver’s, Patina 250........ if you know anything about good food, 31 Club is the place to go!
My and my wife's experience at 31 Club was great! The lighting was great, the service was awesome, the music was at just the right volume, and the food was incredible. No one recommended the restaurant to me, I just ran across it on Google and took a chance. And the risk paid off. My wife loved it and we can't wait to go back.
Husband and I took my parents out to dinner and we wanted to try a new place. We decided on the 31 club. Our main courses we're good, but the calamari and stuffed peppers appetizers were just ok. We went on a Thursday evening and by 7:00, it was dead. We eat out often, and compared to other similar restaurants downtown, 31 club was quite expensive. I don't think we would return again for dinner, since there are so many other great restaurants in the area that are much more reasonably priced.
We ended up sitting at the bar to eat because we arrived earlier than our reservation and even though our high top table was ready, we were told that we wouldn't be able to get service until our reservation time. The bartender, Mike, was very nice. We ordered 4 appetizers and they were all delicious! We had a gift card and unfortunately couldn't use it for the tip, which seemed odd to me.
Brought my mom to celebrate her 82nd birthday. Lovely, classy ambiance. Started with drink in bar and they did not rush us to seating. Initial glitch with food - had special chef from Tuscany that night and regular menu was not available. But this was not on website and we had not been informed. Special menu, while certainly appealing to many, was not for us. Fortunately, we were accommodated and ordered from the regular menu. Absolutely wonderful. Onion soup, banana peppers, salmon. All hot and fresh. Crusty bread with olive oil was excellent as well. Lovely place. Great service and exceptional food. Definitely will dine there again.
Enjoyed the bar before dinner and the food at dinner. Great service and comfortable surroundings. Our only negative was we sat by a window on a very cold night and it was a bit chilly there. It was busy so we couldn’t move to another table. No blame on the restaurant.
If you are looking for solid quality food at a nice price point in a very nice, quiet supper club atmosphere, then the 31 Club would be an excellent choice. A good selection of well-prepared food, nice wine list and efficient, friendly staff makes the dining experience a real job. Highly recommended.
