We enjoyed a nice dinner at 3 Penny a few years back, on a summer evening when we could eat outside. This outing was on a cold Christmas Eve (not a good night to go to restaurants in general.) The converted gas station does not work well in cold weather; it was drafty and uncomfortably chilly. My wife's scallop entre was decent, but served a bit cold. My pork loin was a huge disappointment - the pork was at least 50% fat! The server never checked in to see how we were enjoying the meal. I don't know how the chef could serve that. We will not return.
Had a wonderful lunch, the food was fabulous would highly recommend to everyone we will be returning next trip into Charlottesville the service was great and no need to look for waitress as she kept an eye on table
We are visiting Charlottesville on a family Thanksgiving holiday and booked a table at 3 Penny's for dinner with our kids. The evening began with promise as we were pleasantly greeted by the hostess. However, our server left much to be desired. From the beginning, she was incredibly rude. Perhaps she did not want to be working on a holiday or was upset because I asked if they could adjust any of their meals to be a little more kid-friendly, but that's hardly a reason to behave worse than my kids!
We went with friends for the Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone ordered something different and every meal was outstanding. The menu was varied, with a theme of foods that might been available at the time of the pilgrims. And the deserts were wonderful.
Our waitress was phenomenal, she was attentive, very helpful and made the night amazing. The food was delicious and fresh. The ambiance is wonderful and makes a wonderful backdrop for your meal. The cocktail and beverage menu were very well crafted and well thought out. From a former restaurant manager I would give it 5 stars across the board.
We were in town for UVA Parent's weekend and felt lucky to get a reservation at such a well rated restaurant. It was very disappointing. Service was slow...they ran out of the only beef dish by 7:30pm. Also 4 out of 5 of the entrees were cold. (Frustrating as we waited a very long time for it to be prepared). The outside patio seating had nice ambiance -as the weather was nice. I would not recommend.
The chef never disappoints, always delivers some new creative recipes and menu items. Most recently I had the tomahawk pork chop, the mackerel, and the rabbit. My wine glass never went empty, which is important to me as well. The service is authentic friendly and you always feel welcome, like they are glad to see you, which I think they are. The price point is a clear value that I would say is about $2-$3 per entree less than comparable quality restaurants, and $1-$1.50 less per glass of wine, meaning your meal here is going to be 10%-15% less than elsewhere.
This was a lovely dinner! The chef is completely committed to local farmers and local food and is very knowledgeable. I stayed overnight in Charlottesville specifically so that I could eat at this restaurant and try the Autumn Olive Tomahawk pork chop and it was so worth it! The execution of the meal was flawless. The staff were personable and the design of the restaurant itself is thoughtfully some (I loved the Himalayan Salt candle holders). In a very crowded market of restaurants, Charlottesville is very lucky to have this chef at this restaurant.
When I made reservations for Sunday brunch, I let them know that 2 of our 4 meals would be vegan. The hostess was so nice and brought out the chef to discuss options. All servers were very nice and we will eat there again.
We sat outside with dear friends and had a lovely time. The Bloody Mary's were excellent!

Bar area for cocktails very nice. We sat outside by the fountain which was lovely. Two dishes (mushroom starter and salad) were great and the Porkchop was good. Overall seems pricey for what we got to eat.
Very well prepared, creatively presented, delicious food. A little more thn I normally spend on a sunday brunch with a friend, but well worth it. Friendly, professional service. Unique flavor palate.
3 Penny is an incredible restaurant. Chef Jeff is a very talented chef, and the manager, Stephanie, is very attentive and sweet. This is one of the first farm to table restaurants that I have been to that is actually what it claims to be. We were there for brunch, and the variety of options was extensive. There were four in our party, and we each had something different, and all of us were more than pleased with our choices.
Had a lovely evening celebrating our wedding anniversary with the paleo tasting menu. Love the locally sourced, organic ingredients and grassfed meats. Friendly to allergen free needs. Surrounding diners were a bit loud but can happen anywhere. Portions were very small for tasting menu so ended up ordering a steak to share which was amazing. Will definitely return.
Threepenny Cafe is the kind of place you want to like. Farm to table. friendly staff. Exciting menu. but unfortunately, 3 of the 4 dishes we ordered were just fair or downright underwhelming. The peach soup is a novel idea, something to try once, but I wouldn't get it again. Likewise, the pork chop was fine. Nothing special. anyone half competent could cook something similar at home for themselves. Most disappointing was the Cuban Pizza. I wish i had something more nuanced to say, but it just didn't taste any good. I barely ate half. Overall, I hope this was an aberration, and that we ordered the wrong things, but unfortunately from my four dishes, I cannot recommend threepenny.

We had guests over the weekend and booked dinner here. Everyone *raved* about the excellent food (including our vegan!). Add to that the raves over the creative and delicious cocktails, we knew we picked a winner.
Easy one of our faves in C'ville. Could not recommend more highly.
This restaurant just served me the best fish I have ever eaten, a pan seared mullet. But more importantly, I learned why it was the best fish ever, and why this restaurant/chef is unique and merits acclaim. He sourced the mullet from a supplier that has a controlled aquatic environment that provides a cleaner and purer food source for the mullet. So the mullet tastes better not only because of the chef's cooking skills, but because the fish is a better fish because it's food source is better. This chef is involved and has input on the upstream sources for all major menu items. Another example is that my salad came with a few bits of guanciale. What is guanciale you may ask (I did not know either)? It was explained that the chef buys an entire pig and butchers it himself, using the whole animal head to toe in various ways on the menu. Again, the pig came from a local producer that the chef knows, has visited the farm where the pigs eat forage and acorns in a free range forest environment rather than penned up and fed slop. Guanciale is a "bacon" made from the pig jowl. On the prior visit my wife had lamb bacon in her omelette. It turns out the lamb was locally sourced from a uniquely large 180lb lamb breed and the chef cured his own lamb bacon. My big point is that what ends up on your plate is excellent and unique because the chef starts way upstream with a better product and better sources that he has a relationship with and influence over what that animal eats and the environment in which it lives. One more recommendation.....order the mushroom salad with melted cheese! Cheers.
This was a fabulous find, and instantly one of our favorite spots in C'ville. One of our party is an adventurous vegan, and asked the server to just ask the chef to whip up something vegan and serve it with chef's recommended pairing of wine. The resulting meal was proclaimed "spectacular!" He said it was easily one of the best meals he's ever had. In fact we all raved about our meal and the drinks. Truly a gem! Go, you'll not regret it!
The food here is really good and it's great that so much of it is locally sourced. Friendly staff and a great place to relax with friends.
My wife and I were visiting from VA Beach and found 3 Penny on yelp. We were really impressed with their commitment to local sources and seasonal ingredients. At one point the bartender walked outside to trim fresh herbs to use in cocktails. We were there for brunch. I got the shrimp and grits, it was amazing. Only complaint is I wish the dish came with toast to soak up the delicious sauce in the bottom of the bowl. My wife ordered the croque madame and was equally as impressed. We will recommend it to anyone we know going to Charolettesville.
My husband and I love coming here for brunch, lunch, and dinner. It's one of Charlottesville's gems!
My boyfriend and I enjoyed 3 penny cafe. Appetizer was very good, drinks and desert were awesome! The main course, however, was just mediocre. Portions are not too big (which is OK). We ordered a steak, specifically asked for medium/medium-well and we got medium rear or even rear in some spots... I do understand that you can really feel the quality of the meat but dislike rear meat. Duck was OK, I feel it was a on the rear side.

I would have loved this place, but the staff did not seem to love their job, they were not attentive. We went for brunch, it wasn't busy, our server was more engaged in the other staff and himself than us. It took me 5 minutes to get someone's attention to get me another spoon. When our server brought the bill, he hadn't asked if we wanted anything else, which we did want coffee (which had not been offered or suggested by the server for our meal). We went somewhere else for coffee and dessert.
Threepenny cafe is simply a pioneer in the way it so genuinely and thoroughly sources food from local, sustainable, and organic farms. Unlike so many other "farm-to-table" restaurants that buy from a few local farms and source the rest through distributors, Threepenny is as authentic a farm-to-table experience as it gets. In fact, having had personal experience with many of the pioneering farm-to-table restaurants nationwide, I can say with 100% confidence that Threepenny ranks among the best. Not only are the ingredients the highest quality, which is critical for anyone concerned about their health, but the way they are creatively prepared is exquisite. On top of all that, the price points are outstanding. There is no over-inflation like you see at so many farm-to-table restaurants. The prices at Threepenny are fair and reflective of the quality you are receiving on your plate. Don't pass up the chance to go here if you are in Charlottesville, and even if you have to travel to get here... it will be worth it.
Flavors were pretty outstanding. We both had the blue crab spaghetti dish. Our appetizer was also wonderful. Wine most excellent (pinot noir). Service on point. A very minor observation is that we would have enjoyed more vegetarian/vegan options. And yes, we knew the menu didn't offer much in the way of folks who are more plant based. We went before the crowds start and it was very quiet and intimate. Overall, a really lovely evening.

This is our second trip to 3 Penny and it won't be our last! We especially enjoyed their Sunday brunch and specialty cocktails. Everything was fresh and delishious.
Fabulous locally-sourced food. Lovely conversation with Chef/Owner. We were there to share our anniversary with friends, and they had flowers on the table for us, and champagne was also brought to the table.
Everything was very good. We both ordered the spaghetti with crab and asparagus and it was delicious. My friend is Italian and doesn't usually like pasta in American restaurants but she loved it. Service was perfect. It can get noisy but it wasn't very crowded so it was fairly quiet. We had a lovely evening.
Lovely local cuisine. The lamb was fantastic but there are also very tasty vegetarian options.
An honest "farm to table" restaurant. We ate family style. Great selection of wines and beer. We ordered 7 of the 8 available appetizers, which were all great. We were still hungry so added an entree and a pizza. The pizza crust is unique (sort of a toasted whole grain flat bread) and was delicious. Really, everything was delicious. We will go back the next time we're in CVille.
Enjoyed the food, it tasted great. Service was excellent. We sat outside on the patio as it was beautiful day. Meal had really nice presentation but the portions were small. We took a walk after our lunch to buy ice-cream as we were all still hungry. Lots of good things to say about this charming restaurant. However, most restaurants when you order French Toast you receive 4 half slices. Here they serve just three half slices of very large bread, but still not enough to fill you up for a brunch.
Three Penny was fantastic! I would highly recommend this place for brunch. The fresh cocktails were amazing! Great service as well.

The staff was extremely courteous and attentive, asked us numerous times if everything was OK. It was my wife's birthday and they made it very special and told her several times to have a great day.
Would recommend to anyone looking for good food and a nice atmosphere.
The use of locally sourced ingredients in creative dishes was very well done. The combination of vegetables with the meats and spicing was spot on. We will include 3 Penny among our favorite restaurants in C'ville.
