29 South Eats
This eclectic bistro has it all; great ambiance, fantastic food, an extensive wine list. The menu can best be described as extraordinary casual farm to table cuisine, where Chef Scott Schwartz paints a playground for the palette using the freshest ingredients sourced from local fisherman, farms and our own onsite garden.
Three time winner of the "Best of Jacksonville" 29 South was recently awarded a "Snail of Approval" and "Spirit of Slow Food" by Slow Food USA. Florida Trend magazine has awarded 29 South the coveted Golden Spoon every year since 2010.
The food was so fresh and delicious! It was a highlight of our trip!
Food was excellent. Our waiter was delightful but was responsible for too many tables so our contact with him was sparse. Difficult to get a check and pay our bill.
Food and service was amazing! Try the pork chop!
Nice small farm to table restaurant with attentive staff.
Fantastic menu and everyone completely finished appetizers, full dinner and desserts. Location is quaint and comfy, making for a perfect setting! Our server, Mindy, was delightful and funny, while also being super knowledgeable and friendly!
Excellent as always
Our waitress was outstanding. The homemade pasta was great
We had the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer and they were thickly sliced with a nice touch of goat cheese and red pepper jam. Quite delicious but I would have liked more of the pepper jam, it was so tasty. Three of us had the shrimp and grits and it was delicious. The grits were the creamiest I have ever eaten and was very flavorful with the sauce. One person had the tea brined pork chop and I had a small taste. Very tender and flavorful. His one disappointment was the lobster corn dog. The lobster was over cooked and he did not care for the breading that was used on it. Service was outstanding. We will go back.
Loved the environment and the food! The staff was exceptionally beyond my expectations. Will recommend to anyone.
A fantastic evening at 29 South. We had the scallops with succotash, fried green tomatoes, and crab cakes. Fresh and superbly prepared. The service was equally outstanding. We will certainly return.
Awesome food! Great service. We will be back !
We found the food to be amazing. We had the bread appetizer which was topped with pork, fresh greens and a delicious drizzle sauce. Then we had the sweet tea brined pork chop and shrimp over pasta. We followed it up with desserts. The coffee and donuts and the chocolate soufflé disaster were both awesome. We both thought the food was amazing will definitely be returning!
We went for the food and we’d go back for that and the service! Todd was so friendly and helpful, making recommendations that I might never have ordered otherwise. Great value for farm to table fresh and interesting plates, yet it felt like eating on your own porch.
My husband and I went there on our honeymoon and loved it! We just went back for our 8th anniversary and it is still great! The food is soooo good, and the service was fantastic. They were very accommodating and pleasant. I've already recommended it to several friends.
Great food. I started with crusted bread topped with tomato, mozzarella and basil.
Followed by pan seared scallops with pork belly and grits, delicious. Took home a doughnut bread pudding everything was delicious and service was great
It wasn’t the worst place in the world. The food was really good, however there was no dessert because their cooler broke and the waiter was pushy. You can recommend but don’t push. They need a liquor bar too.
It was nice overall, but very expensive. Small portions for the short rib dinner, should have been bigger for the price we paid. $30 for a four inch long piece. Our friends had the fried chicken and shrimp and grits, definitely larger portions. No mixed drinks, just wine and beer. Small beer list, very large wine list.
Had our second dinner this week while on vacation. Ate here two years ago and loved it. Not this time. Same decor and "vibe." Food taste and quality was good, not great, while the value and service were simply poor. Our server was quite slow, and rarely checked on us during dinner. She delivered the wrong beer from the one I ordered. Later another runner tried to pass our dinners off to a nearby table before bringing them to us. The same runner later tried to pass off the nearby table's dinner TO us, after we had finished our dinners! How in the world does an attentive server do that ?! The Entrees tasted nice, but one of our orders of shrimp and grits was quite honestly, smaller than a tapas plate of food. Downright theft for the price charged. We will not likely return on our next vacation in Fernandina. Too many other wonderful establishments without the poor service and poor value.
We had not eaten here before but heard lots of good reviews. When friends asked to try something new we thought it would be a great opportunity to visit 29 South. We arrived with elevated but not extraordinary expectations. I really don't like writing a bad review but I do this in hopes the owners get this corrected...quickly.
We had to send the fish special back because you needed a steak knife to cut it and sharp teeth to chew it. Unfortunately, after reading some other recent reviews, this is not a one-night problem. It has occurred with other fish as well. To the credit of our server, he noticed we were struggling with the dish and asked if it was okay. We told him the problem and recognized that it wasn't the kitchen's fault as the meat was moist but there was no question the quality of the fish or the filet was not right. He offered to bring us something else and we agreed. That was proactive on the part of the wait staff and appreciated.
We decided on scallops and they were prepared quickly and brought to the table before our friends had completed their meals. Being a restaurant with local foods with a southern flare we were sure this would be a winner but the scallops were not seared well and not translucent at center. The grits that accompanied the scallops had no flavor.
We really want this restaurant to be on our shortlist as it is one of the few southern farm-to-table offerings in Fernandina Beach. After our experience I went back and looked at more recent reviews and see the mixed comments with many, in the past few weeks, showing problems. As I said, to the management, please get this corrected quickly. To our waiter, you did a very good job this evening and you represented the restaurant well.
This has been a favorite of ours for years when visiting the area. Last year we didn't feel like the food was as good and were disappointed. Glad we gave it another shot because it was fantastic.
We ate here in December 2018 and really enjoyed it only to come back on this trip to Amelia Island with some friends to find it just average. We love the farm to table concept, and perhaps they were just having a bad week, but overall the fried chicken we had was overcooked. Another person in the group loved the flavor of the short ribs but the size of the portion was too small. We will likely try it again on a future trip, but so wanted to leave them more stars on this review. The service too, it started out really well, but was slow to offer drink refills and to get the check in the end. It was also not very busy, where last time they were packed with a wait. I hope they snap out of whatever funk they are in, as we really do like the place. Looks some other not so good reviews during the same time / week we visited.
The dinner at this restaurant was unacceptable! The waiter informed us that they were unable to
prepare our two orders because the Chef had thrown out the shrimp, but didn't know why. We then said to substitute the orders and use scallops. The waiter then served me my dish with substituted scallops
which I couldn't identify as scallops and the dish set in front of my partner was Shrimp and grits! The
oder was so awful the waitress removed and said she was sorry. So guess the shrimp jumped out of the trash can because it sure smelled like it!!! It then took 30 min. for them to prepare her scallops on cold grits and I had already finish my small portion .
They never even offered to remove from bill for all meal which was totally unacceptable for a restaurant on
open table!! This restaurant needs to be removed.
We ate dinner here late on Saturday night - the food was pretty good but expensive for what was served. My husbands burger was on the dry side and there was not a lot of flavor to the meat; he would not order again. I enjoyed my shrimp pappardelle but the portion size was small. However, the shrimp was very fresh and the sauce was delicious. It would have been nice they had given the tables some bread or something to munch on as a starter to negate some of the portions.
Great food and excellent service
Incredible!! Best of everything you want in a restaurant! A must visit when in Fernandina Beach, FL
Place looked like a tiled bathroom. Biggest problem was the fruit flies everywhere. I’m considering reporting them since I believe it’s against code to serve food in such conditions. If they’re in the dining room, they’re probably in the kitchen. Staff was friendly but not very attentive once we got our food. Our friend ordered the shrimp papperadelle and it came with no spoon to eat the abundant broth, nor bread to sop up the sauce. Couldn’t get a waiter for a spoon until the dish was almost finished. Hard to get more water. My fries were soggy with grease. My husband enjoyed his scallops and our friend liked his shrimp and grits, but I don’t think we would go back there. Such a disappointment. We’re locals and use to go there a lot when they first opened. Now it just looks depressing inside and the service was poor and the flies!!!!!
Food was very good but portion size extremely small. Especially the shrimp pasta dish.
Love this place. Food and service always great. Wine list has made a comeback
29 South never disappoints. Quality ingredients paired with clever, tasty recipes. And as always, the service was impeccable. I always take out-of-town guests to 29 South.
The food is AMAZING. And the farm to table concept is just what we look for. The chef's creative flair with the food combinations is spot on. Never a disappointment....our go to place for an outstanding meal.
The food was tasty in a conventional way. Sadly, the plates were small and lacked creativity. I love the idea of fresh ingredients farm to table, but freshness should not negate creativity. The prices were high for the food presented. There are other restaurants in the area with creative plates at a better value.
The waitstaff was fantastic- appropriately engaged without ingratiating himself into our evening.
The food was overpriced for lacking creativity in the dishes. My pasta was sitting in a watery pool at the bottom of the dish and it had peas mixed in that, if i has to guess, came from a steam fresh bag and were then haphazardly dumped into the dish. Also charging $10 for a crostini appetizer that was literally 1 piece of bread covered with a bit of tomato and some mozzarella was questionable; how is that an app to share? C’mon. Servers were friendly though!
Excellent service and food
Although fried chicken was excellent, the shrimp and grits was nothing to write home about. The server precluded the specials by telling us what they didn’t have. Lastly, the acoustics were not good-we were a table of two and ten were seated in our small alcove putting the noise level over the top.
Expected much better. Bland ceviche, lukewarm crab cake, blah tomatoes. Not what I was expecting.
Delicious, fresh food in a great setting! Wait staff was excellent.
We have been coming here every year on our vacation for years. It never disappoints. Fun, novel foodie dishes in a casual chic setting that fits upscale beach town.
Highly recommend this restaurant- always high quality, fresh food. The pork chop was divine!
Great dinner! Excellent food. Cute place! We enjoyed it with our kids making the noice level a bit much but they were super accommodating!
Service staff allowed a family to take over the restaurant noise level. When I asked about it given that this is a relatively small restaurant, our waiter explained that one child was pinching the other child causing her to scream. He then asked jokingly what my reaction would be if someone pinched me. three meals were very good especially the short ribs, but the pork chop was like shoe leather. Usually a good solid restaurant. They were not managing the dining experience very well this night
