29 South Eats
This eclectic bistro has it all; great ambiance, fantastic food, an extensive wine list. The menu can best be described as extraordinary casual farm to table cuisine, where Chef Scott Schwartz paints a playground for the palette using the freshest ingredients sourced from local fisherman, farms and our own onsite garden.
Three time winner of the "Best of Jacksonville" 29 South was recently awarded a "Snail of Approval" and "Spirit of Slow Food" by Slow Food USA. Florida Trend magazine has awarded 29 South the coveted Golden Spoon every year since 2010.
True southern eats with great presentation and great staff. Loved the Shrimp And Grits and I’m not usually a grits eater. Tempura shrimp ascent the dish and the bowl doesn’t disappoint. Expect to be satisfied and contently full.
Kiki, our waitress was very nice and professional. We ordered shrimp and papparadelle. There were five local, small shrimp and 3-4 strands of house made pasta in a nicely seasoned broth. Although it was tasty, it was not much for $28 each and we were still hungry when we left. It was not served with anything; no salad, no bread. Wouldn’t go back and wouldn’t recommend to others.
Great food, and the service was outstanding. Definitely making a return visit.
Kitchen disconnect and lack of service. Won’t go back.
Started with glasses of wine. Fruit flies in my red wine...so it was replaced.
Salad and lobster corn dog appetizer arrived after quite a wait. And 20 seconds later they delivered the entrees. Not pleased.
Salad was so-so. Lobster corn dog was heavily heavily battered with little lobster.
The short ribs were very fatty.
Shrimp and grits were tasty — the only thing I’d recommend.
Service is take your order; disappear then reappear when it’s time for the check.
Delicious. Best meal in the area. Hands down. Friendly service as well.
One of the best restaurants in the area. Everything is spot on — food, service and ambiance. Not stuffy, just quality food. One of our favorites.
We have been coming here for years and after two years away - did not disappoint!! Thank you!
Great food and dining experience.
WE ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE VERY MUCH. BUT THE DECOR IN MAIN DINING ROOM IS VERY MINIMALIST AND BORING. SERVICE AND FOOD WAS EXCELLANT.
Excellent once again. We ate on the patio and no problem with noise.
Some of our dishes were truly amazing, others were just good. Excellent service. The Short Rib and the Burger were fantastic. This place is expensive, but it really was good.
one in our party had the fried chicken. it was surprisingly just OK. Kind of flavorless. other meals were very good
What a strange evening! My husband and I made a reservation, and the restaurant was definitely not busy or full, yet they sat us at a horrible table squeezed between a wall with no window and a floor to ceiling wine rack so close that the waiter couldn’t fit between it.
Speaking of which, the waiter was nearly invisible the entire evening. We had to flag down someone for a water refill, and from the time the expediter dropped off our entrées and time for the check, we didn’t see him. He never checked in to see if we had gotten everything we needed and that our first lights were OK. When we asked for our check, he dropped it off and dashed away. When we left, no one said a word to us - no thanks, how was your meal, or come back soon.
We’re local and love our local restaurants. We eat out a lot, typically order a nice bottle of wine, and tip handsomely. We’re never rude or difficult, so I know it wasn’t something we did that resulted in the poor service.
All that said, the food was very good and the bottle of wine we chose was lovely. If the atmosphere and service had been up to par we would certainly be back. But there are just too many other great restaurants in town competing for attention.
Delicious food and great service!! We will be back!!
Had such a wonderful evening. Service, food, wine selection was great. Never disappoints.
The food and delivery was amazing. I had blackened sea bass which was an off menu item and it was the the most unbelievable combination of flavors combining farm fresh to the absolute best in seafood. My husband had the fish tacos, another culinary delight that has a flavor combination that lights up your taste buds. Last but not least, desert, deserves recognition. My favorite the ‘Coffee and Doughnuts ‘ creation, bread pudding at its ultimate with mocha ice cream. Yes we will return and recommend to all!
We met the chef in the afternoon discussing his kitchen garden with his gardeners. They welcomed us to come behind the garden and see the variety of greens that were there. I never knew greens could be so varied. We took a taste test around the garden and we decided then and there to return for dinner. I had the shrimp with pasta and my husband the brined pork chop. We shared a grilled romaine salad. We also shared a bread pudding with homemade caramel ice cream. Everything was excellent. Reservations recommended. Lots of outside seating and there are heaters.
The staff at 29 South are all well informed about the foods they serve and are extremely pleasant, professional and fun! We love their brunch too.
Service was slow and inattentive. Server was never around to see if we needed anything. Food was good, restaurant not crowded but they were turning away walk-Ins without reservations. Maybe we hit it on an off night.
Excellent brunch! And very accommodating to friend with food issues. They were able to prepare something special for her. Sitting inside is ok, but outside is fab. Can’t wait to go back!
29 South is a great restaurant! The food and staff are incredible!! Todd and David are so attentive. Always a great meal from appetizer to dessert.
The food and service were outstanding as usual. We will be back.
Our family of 7 included 4 college spring breakers and grandparents . A wonderful experience all the way around. I had the short rib which was so tender & delicious. Se real had fried
green tomatoes lightly fried& stuffed with goat cheeses & cream cheese. So wonderful. Waitress , Amber so pleasant & efficient. Reservations recommended.
Service was a joke. I was waiting for the Candid Camera guy to pop up.
Both the food and service were beyond excellent!! Those lobster corn dogs were to die for! Highly recommended!
Inattentive and sloppy service. Spilled wine all over table, my pants and on the wine glasses. Very disappointed in table seating next to kitchen, poor service and food quality. We will not return for some time.
Todd our server and the manager made it a very enjoyable experience. As always the food was delicious.
Our waitress was great.. had a few mishaps with our meals & they ran out of several items.. but overall it was fair.
Lovely cozy place, very attentive staff loved our Food!
29 South has the best shrimp and grits with a large quantity of shrimp in the dish.
Plus, the shrimp is cooked two different ways. Fernandina Beach has great local shrimp!
The nicest servers I have ever come across. Good food (not 'great' food, but delicious), reasonable price and a lovely porch. Wonderful people.
Very disappointing this visit. Food not as good in past years. Not sure we will return.
A wonderful setting just off of Centre Street in downtime Amelia Island. You will feel welcome the moment you walk in this inviting restaurant. The menu is classic southern done with thoughtful (and delicious!) touches. The wine list is exceptional with many smaller producers selected to compliment the wonderful dishes. The menu is full of locally sourced and sustainable raised items that are perfectly prepared and plated. The scallop appetizer and shrimp focused entrees we enjoyed were a perfect combination of tradition and modern creativity. The service was the perfect balance of polite, professional, and attentive making for a truly wonderful evening!
The food was fresh, hot and served in a timely manner. Excellent server. Love this place!
They seemed to have changed their fried chicken which went from amazing to edible. They did change their bread pudding dessert which was also disappointing.
I have made this an annual stop for years and am not sure I’ll be back.
We were excited to get back to this place for dinner after having eaten the best shrimp and grits of my life here 5 years ago. Unfortunately, time has not been kind. The service was agonizingly slow. The couple next to us got up and left after waiting more than 30 minutes for their drinks to arrive. We toughed it out and eventually got fed but the food was not worth the wait. Who puts heavily breaded, deep fried shrimp in shrimp and grits? I'm a northerner and even I know that is wrong. So sad...:(
Food was amazing. Service was great. Loved this place.
