We dined at 272 Souna Cafe & Lounge on Weds. before seeing a show at the Orpheum. Our reservations were at 6:30. There were only two people working the dining room, which was very surprising, and I was immediately concerned about getting out on time. I noticed many other patrons were also trying to get out on time to attend the show. One lady actually approached the host/waiter and was very verbal about her displeasure and wanted to know what the hold up was (they had a large party & some had received their orders while others had not). We did receive everything on time and was able to get to our show on time. The food ordered was good even though the menu was more limited than I expected. Would defenetly not visit this location again, and would never recommend it to anyone.
Definite pre-theatre option. Casual dining with a vibrant bar scene. Good use of locally grown ingredients. Staff very knowledgeable and accommodating to my large family with children. Steak dishes were excellent. The ahi tuna was a bit dry.
We loved every dish we shared, especially the crab cakes!
Great quiet place for lunch before a matinee performance or a visit to the Asian Art Museum. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. Food was eclectic and tasty. The room is inviting with a garden view that is unusual in the downtown core.
Service was barely OK. Took a while to get menus even though it was not busy. Waiter opened the wine we brought-and charged corkage-and walked away leaving us to pour our own. Food quality was good, but my ahi tuna was way too rare--cold inside. VERY slow bar service. Took 15 minutes to get our after dinner drinks. Our waiter was very polite and friendly, but not very good. SF waiters are way overpaid--getting like the indifferent service you get in Europe. But the place is very convenient for a pre-Orpheum dinner. Otherwise, I'd give it a pass.
The food was great, we Vegetarian Risotto and Mac&Cheese as main coarse. A watermelon and heirloom tomato salad. The desert, a vanilla ice-cream with Carmel sauce was ok, not great.
Food and service were excellent. Would highly recommend Soluna for any occasion.
This was a choice based on our tickets that night for the symphony. It worked out very well.
The waiter was helpful and getting us out in a short time...the food was OK, and the wine choices though expensive were very good. I would return.
Good food and botto loud. A good place for conversation.
Interesting place, doesn't look much from outside.
We wanted to eat somewhere before going to the theatre.
When we booked online it looked like they only did sandwiches and salads, but that was not the case.
The food was very reasonably priced for the center of San Francisco and was also very good.
The menu was not extensive, but had something for everyone. The food was cooked and presented nicely. The staff were friendly and efficient.
Close to Davies Symphony Hall. Children are welcome and the menu works for a young family.
The food (crab fritters) were tasty and fresh. My dessert of cookie, salted carmel and ice cream was delicious. The waitress was very attentive and pleasant. They asked immediately after being seated, if we had theatre tickets, making sure we had sufficient time to enjoy our meal. The restaurant was in a great location from the theatre district and Bart.
One of few go-to places in the Civic Center area for lunch. I needed to meet with someone to discuss some business, and the convenience of it being near City Hall is invaluable. The service was friendly and attentive so no problems there. Through Open Table, I asked for a quiet table, and although the music was fairly noticeable, we were able to hold a conversation without any problems. Now, the lunch got a less-than stellar rating: we both ordered the Caesar Salad with Chicken. While the menu did warn us that the lettuce is "grilled," it forgot to warn us (unless we both missed it) that a cute little anchovy would be laying around upon arriving at the table. That aside, the dressing was off (can't quite hone down what the issue was), and lastly the croutons were way too big and hard (couldn't be cut easily, so you just had to gnaw on it like your German Shepard and his cowhide). But don't let one salad scare you away. I love Soluna and should have stuck with the burger. Next time for sure!
Loved it. Best Burger ever. Have it with the salad. Yummy dressing.
Made friends with neighboring table. Had a fabulous waitress; wish I could remember her musical name.
I plan to make this my pre-opera food treat.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Soluna Cafe after seeing the musical Hamilton. The food was out of this world delicious and the staff was very courteous. It was a very pleasant evening. I had the risotto and my friend had the encrusted Ahi. Both selections were so good.
I'll be back!
We selected Soluna for a pre-show dinner. The show was at the Orpheum Theater (Hamalton). Perfect location, 2 block walk.
Service was pleasant and welcoming, food was delicious. The fried chicken was off the hook!!! Crab & pumpkin fritters were also good.
Most convenient, we parked on the street at 6 pm, for free, right in front of the restaurant.
If you go to the Orpheum, this us the place for your pre-show dinner. Or lunch while at City Hall!
Service was slow. After a time, we asked a waiter who our server was. He gestured with his head that another server was ours, and it would be just a bit more wait. Server was not welcoming or responsive to small talk. Service continued to be slow, but food was good and we had time, so we put up with it.
While the food was good, it was simple fare, not creative. Definitely needs an updated redo. A little shabby. Questionable cleanliness in ladies' restroom. Location to Orpheum Theater is one block. Very convenient spot.
Stopped here for lunch before a matinee show at the Orpheum. The service was outstanding and lunch was served in a very timely manner. Quiet, comfortable and a good place for good food and conversation.
This was a wonderful place to visit before going to the opera. Staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Food was excellent and the wine recommendation was perfect for the meal. Will definitely come back.
I took my daughter to see Hamilton for her 16th birthday, and we had dinner her before the show. The table was very close to other diners, and because we could easily hear their conversations, we knew that they were all attending Hamilton as well. The food was tasty - my daughter chose the macaroni and cheese, and she pronounced it one of the best examples of mac and cheese she'd ever had. I had brussels sprouts and crab/pumpkin fritters. While the brown sugar brussels sprouts were extremely tasty, the fritters were nothing special (but they were good enough for me to eat them all). I had placed on my reservation that it was my daughter's birthday, but it was never mentioned during our visit, so I assume they don't do anything for birthdays. We ordered a chocolate mouse to split, and enjoyed its richness, although it was a bit grainy on top. We gave ourselves an hour and a half for dinner, and were able to make the show in plenty of time. Other diners around us didn't give themselves enough time and had to skip the dessert, which is never an option in our family!
REALLY ENJOYED FOOD AND SERVICE. WE RAN LATE AND THEY HELD THE TABLE FOR US. GREAT SERVICE AND FOOD. LIKE THE VIBE AND LOCATION. VERY CONVENIENT FOR THE PLAY.
Good food and friendly service. This apparently is a popular after-work happy hour bar, however, and the bar, at the front just inside the entrance, looks a bit run-down with a sour smell. Put me off, although dinner in the restaurant was fine.
I've been a patron of Soluna for years. I'm leaving this review to let readers know this spot is one of the best around Civic Center. The food has always been consistently good, they have their own garden right next to the cafe, you can't get any fresher ingredients in your dish. The mid-size bar and table areas make sure it doesn't get too overcrowded to receive good service and keeps the noise level down. The Civic Center parking garage is across the street so it is convenient as well. This is not the fanciest or 'trendiest' place in downtown, but it's not trying to be, it's being itself with a style that has kept them around for years while others have come and gone...
This place is perfect for a lovely dinner before theater. Finer fare like steak and small plates, as well as higher end delicious fried chicken and burgers. For dessert we shared a delicious affogato - the espresso was just what was needed for a late night show.
We look forward to going there again.
The burger was great, the Ahi Tuna was also tasty. Loved Brennan our waiter!
We had a 6pm reservation for 3 people. We arrived at 5:50 and were told to go the bar until our table was ready. We sat down and there was 1 other person who was then served. We sat there for 20 minutes and the bartender totally ignored us. We tried to get his attention to no avail. Finally the maitre'd told us out table was ready. I told him we weren't served in 20 minutes. He said you can get drinks at the table. I told him we wanted the price of drinks at the bar as we had tried to be served. He begrudgingly said ok, but just 1 drink. I said did all 3 of us! Anyway, it was a bad start to the meal.
Service was just fair. Cost of a glass of wine too high. The rest was more than just acceptable - quite good!
We ended up here before a show at the Orpheum. It was not crowded, except at the bar since happy hour goes until 7. Comfortable place with good food. Nothing amazing but tasty wth good portions at decent prices. Would go back.
This is a convenient place to dine in the Civic Center area at a decent price, especially if attending the Asian Art Museum (and on Thursday evenings when the museum is open later during the spring, summer and early fall months). The bar scene is pretty noisy, but quiets down after about 7:30 pm. The menu is somewhat limited, but they have divided it into handy 'small, medium, and large' plates-- and comfort foods reign -- their steak dish is a tender cut and was cooked just right.
Service can be very slow and somewhat inattentive, but our server was pleasant when he could be found!
We made reservations for pre-theatre. Close location, easy walk to Orpheum and menu options looked appealing. We arrived early, and enjoyed a few happy hour bites and beverages - great handcrafted cocktail list and creative cocktail of the day.
We stayed for dinner. Loved the bread, although you do have to request it and seconds if you polish it off like we did. Great selection of salads, small plates and larger items for sharing, or not! The Pumpkin and Crab fritters were out of this world! We would recommending getting the spicy sauce that comes with the fried chicken to dip them in - they were excellent with a little sweet and spicy sauce in addition to the aioli that was provided.
We left feeling well sated and happy.
On a side note: one of us left our credit card here accidentally. After a phone call and email of identify confirmations, they were more than willing to mail it back to us! This was very kind and indicative of the excellent service we experienced during our time there.
Would definitely return and recommend to others. Try to Fire and Brimstone for an excellent cocktail!
Great pre-show dinner. With reservations made, the three of us enjoyed a very pleasant, unrushed dinner. Our server was friendly, accommodating to change requests and on it for pouring waters, glasses of Cava and bringing beer when she saw one finished. The food was so delicious with portions just a bit larger than our appetites. That's a good problem to have, I say. Will certainly be back!
Crab cakes very good, mac and cheese so- so. Maybe need another trip to review more favorably. Good service.
We enjoyed the quiet so we could talk. However, a couple of the items were represented. The waiter said the shoshito peppers are 1 in 8 peppers hot. Hahaha, these peppers were gigantic in size. Old peppers allowed to grow that big are jammed with hot seeds. Plus, they were drenched in oil. Yuk. Then came the croquettes, for which the breading were hockey-puck thick. There was no mention on the menu that they were deep-fried, nor did the waiter have the right information. My salad nicoise, with a few thin pieces of seared ahi, wasn't worth the price tag. We'd return for drinks, period. What a disappointment from my time there with friends last year!
Consistently fine food and service over several visits. Excellent location, around corner from Asian Art Museum, City Hall, and quick walk to theaters and symphony, etc. We'll be back!
The service was horrible. We were a party of 6 and our entrees came out one or two at a time with one entree arriving 15 minutes later after everyone else finished eating. And that dish was fish so you know it was not cooking that whole time. Server admitted it was his fault but didn't apologize and even had the nerve to point out on the bill the gratuity for large parties was added but it was "just a minimum". Like he expected more!! Wait staff was doing shots at the bar.
Our nice waiter recommended the hamburger and the fried chicken. I had the hamburger, it was tasty but not medium rare which I ordered... No pink at all. The waiter didn't check back until I was over half way through, and I'm a slow eater, so no optin to correct. When I showed him, he agreed and he replied that he would tell the kitchen...didn't help my dinner. A comped sorbet dessert or something would have been appropriate. Please don't ask me how I want my meat and then not deliver it that way! No need to go back in my book.
I am not the greatest at remembering to write follow up reviews but felt compelled to do so this time.
After making reservations, based in great part to proximity to Orpheum Theatre, I was almost scared away by the reviews that complained about the slow service, delay in getting mail meals. etc.
To my delight, service was wonderful and the staff not only brought our choices out promptly, they worked with me to stay within my limited vegan options..
Loved their fired chicken!! Great for dinner before the theater!
