I hate to write a bad review because the food was excellent as it was two months ago when we returned after a long hiatus from the restaurant. But the service was awful. We don't blame the waiter, who was on his second day of employment. He tried hard and he was very pleasant. It was the kitchen and the bar. We knew that something must be amiss when it took 20 minutes to fill our cocktail order at a point when the restaurant was still relatively empty. I ordered a salade Nicoisse. It was served a decent time after I ordered, but my wife's risotto, ordered at the same time as mine, did not come with it. We waited and waited for the risotto. I could have eaten three servings of the Nicoisse in that time frame. It finally arrived after a 40 minute wait. We had theatre tickets and so we left as soon as my wife finished the risotto. We skipped dessert and paid in cash because we feared we would have another long wait for the restaurant to process our credit card. In all, we arrived at 6 pm and departed at 7:45, having had just one course and a cocktail.

A short walk from Civic Center or the Orpheum, this is a nice place for a lunch or dinner when you're looking for good food, friendly service and a peaceful atmosphere. Dinner menu is divided into : small dishes, medium and large. The wait staff was more than willing to share how the kitchen could adapt some of the menu items to fill the needs of one of our group, the vegetarian.
We shared a salad (big enough for a starter for 2 or 3) and each ordered an entree. We finished with a shared dessert, and all enjoyed our dinners. There is a good wine list and beer choices as well.

Our go-to restaurant before ACT performances. Food was delicious and service outstanding. Quiet enough for easy conversation. Always look forward to our pre-theater lunches!

Loved my charred caesar salad. Great place for lunch before our show at the Strand. Parking in the SOMA Grand lot on Mission was easy, convenient, and affordable.

We love to go here before we head over to The Strand Theater, a few blocks away. The service we received at Soluna was excellent, friendly, helpful and professional. Our waitress was wonderful. I ordered the seared tuna salad and it was delicious. The fish was fresh; the other ingredients were tasty and also very fresh. My husband had the hamburger with fries and he said that everything was very good. The bread was served hot and crusty...just the way we like it! For dessert, we shared the pear crumble...and it was yummy!!!!

My grilled caesar salad was inedible: bland yet fishy tasting dressing, limp lettuce and rancid oily croutons. Also, while apparently cokes and ice teas came with free refills, lemonades were charged by the glass, yet the waitress did not bother to mention this when bringing subsequent rounds of drinks to the table.

We loved the old city ambiance and throwback cocktail list. Our server was extremely personal and we enjoyed our meal. So nice to be able to hear each other and talk over dinner.

We had not been to Soluna for some time, and enjoyed our return. There were few customers, which is unusual for a Friday evening. We had made our reservation on Open Table. The couple seated next to us had tried to make a reservation on Open Table but there were no times available. So they made their reservation over the phone. Our server commented that the problem with Open Table might explain why there were so few customers. We have had a similar experience with a popular restaurant in Berkeley. According to Open Table there were no times available. We have called the restaurant and alway been able to make a reservation.

We met a friend for dinner and had a nice time. The menu was interesting and the food well prepared. The service was great--they even charged our visitor's smart phone while we ate. The menu was a bit pricey; we would go again when we are in the neighborhood.

In the past, I would rate the food as "good", but this time the food was "excellent". I had a terrific pork ragu with burata cheese. My wife had the vegetable risotto. We recommend both. The only negative experience was that the olives in the martinis had pits! Take them out!

I am always reluctant to write this kind of review, but since I had such a deplorable experience, I want to warn others. I have eaten at Soluna in the past, and have had satisfactory experiences, but this time's experience will have me avoiding this restaurant in the future. Our first course, their cheese and meat Charcuterie, was minuscule, hardly worth the $21.00 price, and the cheeses (two tiny selections) and meats (also 2 small selections) were not fresh! Then we both had the first course selection of their Tuna Niçoise Salad, that like the Chacuterie, the tuna was not fresh, tasteless, and over greens that had an unpleasant taste. Having been in the business, I felt obliged to share this with our waiter, who apologized profusely, but took no other action. Again, being familiar with the restaurant business, I know how a review of this sort can impact a restaurant, and consequently, as I said, was reluctant to write such a scathing review, but now you are forewarned and go there at your own risk of having a similar disappointing experience.

I think Soluna survives mainly because it's the only fairly nice place within easy walking distance of the state buildings on McAllister. Service at lunch on a weekday was indifferent at best, almost resentful. Food was adequate, nothing more.

1. It took the waiter 20 mins to bring a bottle of Preellegrono. Second bottle ordered never made it to the table.
2. He completely forgot about the bottle of wine we ordered and only remembered about it when serving our dinner. Eventually the wine arrived halfway through dinner (~40 mins after we were seated)
3. Food tasted fine, unfortunately I was violently sick after the Tuna Nicoise Salad I had.
What a disaster!
Never going there again!

We dined at 272 Souna Cafe & Lounge on Weds. before seeing a show at the Orpheum. Our reservations were at 6:30. There were only two people working the dining room, which was very surprising, and I was immediately concerned about getting out on time. I noticed many other patrons were also trying to get out on time to attend the show. One lady actually approached the host/waiter and was very verbal about her displeasure and wanted to know what the hold up was (they had a large party & some had received their orders while others had not). We did receive everything on time and was able to get to our show on time. The food ordered was good even though the menu was more limited than I expected. Would defenetly not visit this location again, and would never recommend it to anyone.

Definite pre-theatre option. Casual dining with a vibrant bar scene. Good use of locally grown ingredients. Staff very knowledgeable and accommodating to my large family with children. Steak dishes were excellent. The ahi tuna was a bit dry.

Great quiet place for lunch before a matinee performance or a visit to the Asian Art Museum. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. Food was eclectic and tasty. The room is inviting with a garden view that is unusual in the downtown core.

Service was barely OK. Took a while to get menus even though it was not busy. Waiter opened the wine we brought-and charged corkage-and walked away leaving us to pour our own. Food quality was good, but my ahi tuna was way too rare--cold inside. VERY slow bar service. Took 15 minutes to get our after dinner drinks. Our waiter was very polite and friendly, but not very good. SF waiters are way overpaid--getting like the indifferent service you get in Europe. But the place is very convenient for a pre-Orpheum dinner. Otherwise, I'd give it a pass.

The food was great, we Vegetarian Risotto and Mac&Cheese as main coarse. A watermelon and heirloom tomato salad. The desert, a vanilla ice-cream with Carmel sauce was ok, not great.

This was a choice based on our tickets that night for the symphony. It worked out very well.
The waiter was helpful and getting us out in a short time...the food was OK, and the wine choices though expensive were very good. I would return.

Interesting place, doesn't look much from outside.
We wanted to eat somewhere before going to the theatre.
When we booked online it looked like they only did sandwiches and salads, but that was not the case.
The food was very reasonably priced for the center of San Francisco and was also very good.
The menu was not extensive, but had something for everyone. The food was cooked and presented nicely. The staff were friendly and efficient.

The food (crab fritters) were tasty and fresh. My dessert of cookie, salted carmel and ice cream was delicious. The waitress was very attentive and pleasant. They asked immediately after being seated, if we had theatre tickets, making sure we had sufficient time to enjoy our meal. The restaurant was in a great location from the theatre district and Bart.

One of few go-to places in the Civic Center area for lunch. I needed to meet with someone to discuss some business, and the convenience of it being near City Hall is invaluable. The service was friendly and attentive so no problems there. Through Open Table, I asked for a quiet table, and although the music was fairly noticeable, we were able to hold a conversation without any problems. Now, the lunch got a less-than stellar rating: we both ordered the Caesar Salad with Chicken. While the menu did warn us that the lettuce is "grilled," it forgot to warn us (unless we both missed it) that a cute little anchovy would be laying around upon arriving at the table. That aside, the dressing was off (can't quite hone down what the issue was), and lastly the croutons were way too big and hard (couldn't be cut easily, so you just had to gnaw on it like your German Shepard and his cowhide). But don't let one salad scare you away. I love Soluna and should have stuck with the burger. Next time for sure!

Made friends with neighboring table. Had a fabulous waitress; wish I could remember her musical name.
I plan to make this my pre-opera food treat.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Soluna Cafe after seeing the musical Hamilton. The food was out of this world delicious and the staff was very courteous. It was a very pleasant evening. I had the risotto and my friend had the encrusted Ahi. Both selections were so good.
I'll be back!

We selected Soluna for a pre-show dinner. The show was at the Orpheum Theater (Hamalton). Perfect location, 2 block walk.

Service was pleasant and welcoming, food was delicious. The fried chicken was off the hook!!! Crab & pumpkin fritters were also good.

Most convenient, we parked on the street at 6 pm, for free, right in front of the restaurant.

If you go to the Orpheum, this us the place for your pre-show dinner. Or lunch while at City Hall!

Service was slow. After a time, we asked a waiter who our server was. He gestured with his head that another server was ours, and it would be just a bit more wait. Server was not welcoming or responsive to small talk. Service continued to be slow, but food was good and we had time, so we put up with it.

I took my daughter to see Hamilton for her 16th birthday, and we had dinner her before the show. The table was very close to other diners, and because we could easily hear their conversations, we knew that they were all attending Hamilton as well. The food was tasty - my daughter chose the macaroni and cheese, and she pronounced it one of the best examples of mac and cheese she'd ever had. I had brussels sprouts and crab/pumpkin fritters. While the brown sugar brussels sprouts were extremely tasty, the fritters were nothing special (but they were good enough for me to eat them all). I had placed on my reservation that it was my daughter's birthday, but it was never mentioned during our visit, so I assume they don't do anything for birthdays. We ordered a chocolate mouse to split, and enjoyed its richness, although it was a bit grainy on top. We gave ourselves an hour and a half for dinner, and were able to make the show in plenty of time. Other diners around us didn't give themselves enough time and had to skip the dessert, which is never an option in our family!
