Overall a very enjoyable experience. The one negative was a bad first impression. On entering the establishment I was struck by the smell of old, sour beer. Very off-putting. Once through the bar area, the ambiance was improved.
Not a large menu, but some very interesting options. We wanted a light dinner before being Hamilton (2 short blocks away) We split both the arugula and citrus salad and the seared tuna, both were excellent. Great mojitos! Waiter asked if we were going to a show and service was prompt (along with the check, always appreciated!).
A lovely friendly café style restaurant. The waiter was wonderful and the food excellent.
great service at the bar before we moved to our table where mark was an excellent server. the food was tasty and served at the correct temperature-thanks,
drawbacks would be that the bar area (whole front of restaurant) really smells bad, like dirty water or ???. the fabric panels hanging from the ceiling in the bar look fithly and, in general, the place really just looks old and dirty. additionally, the paper menus were crumpled and stained. come on, print some new ones. could be so easy to do better with the infrastructure as the food and drinks are good.
I enjoyed my experience at Soluna very much. It has beautiful hanging lanterns and played my favorite 80's songs quietly, so I give it top marks for ambiance. My beet salad was ok, and my brussel sprouts were ok- not the best ever, but pleasant. Flan dessert was good too, but not amazing. My husband wanted to order the brisket, but they were out- at 6:30 PM? Soluna was just a short walk to the Opera House so it's a good before theater option! I will go here again!
We had the slow cooked ragu and burrata. It was good but not great. The services was only fair.
Does the job for a quick pre theater dinner but certainly would not travel there from any distance.
This has been a consistent favorite before activities in the Civic Center area. Reservations recommended as it’s a favorite of the theater/ballet set. I like their ahi tuna, Caesar and brisket. Shrimp fritters were dubbed too bready by those who had them. Our neighbors had chicken and waffles which looked really good.
Good salads, fritters, seating, friendly service. Good wine pours.
This was our second time here, and it was just as great as the first time! Friendly service, great drinks, and delicious food.
When we arrived we were the first diners seated. They were short staffed but, even though our OT instruction and verbal to server that we needed to attend a show at the Orpheum, food came out late and, later, we had to go to the register on our way out to pay. Never got bread previously requested and needed two requests for more water. Second glass of wine was prompt!
Yes, I would recommend Soluna Cafe & Lounge to a friend. It was perfect for a before the theater type of meal. The food was better than the service on the night we were there. But, after a snafu with one waitress, another one stepped up and took very good care of us. We will go back as the food selections were very interesting and delicious.
We tried this place which was very close to our theater venue.....a quick bite before the show...wow...we were impressed with the quality of the food, the presentation..and the attentive staff. The ambiance was quiet as well...and that's a plus for us when dining. We will remember this convenient and tasty option.
I have been to Soluna a lot of the years, usually before going to the ballet. The service has always been slow but the food and conveince keeps me coming back. After my last visit though I will never go back. The service was beyond horrible. My husband and I waited for our food over 45 min. I had to ask for water 4 times. When the food came my husband liked his but my chicken and waffles were dry and missing the sauce. I had to ask two different servers for sauce before I finally got it. Plus I had seen the man next to me get the same meal and his was presented completely different. The table next to me asked 3 times for dessert menus and then finally the server came to take there dessert order they had to say we are still waiting for menus. At one point there was a line of people that went up to the servers stand because they were tired of waiting for there checks. It was ridiculous.
Soluna is a great place to grab lunch if you're in the Civic Center area and not break your bank. And it's an elegant yet homey place for dinner before the theatre. Wide ranging menu and really down to earth wait staff. What's not to like?
The food was very tasty and the portions generous. Prices were very reasonable, especially for San Francisco. We ordered a bottle of wine which was mid-range price wise, by-the-glass would have been a better value, although whatever they were pouring was the same for everyone (white or red). Service was basic to get the job done but not especially warm or engaging. The location is away from more popular food area in Hayes Valley. and no at all scenic. It's about a 15 minute easy walk from Civic Center BART but close enough to Opera House, Davis Symphony Hall, etc.. We had 5:45 PM reservations on a Saturday. The restaurant filled up within 30 minutes. The food was a good enough draw that we'd go back.
First time tat Soluna Cafe. Went for dinner before seeing Hamilton. Great first and service.
The food, service and ambience were great, as usual!
We often have lunch at Soluna Cafe before attending plays at the Strand. This time, as more people came, service was slower. Waitress was lovely, but she was working the dining room alone. Also, the menu seems to have fewer options than before. I ordered the Thai salad and forgot to ask if it were spicy. Unfortunately it was much too spicy for me, and I wasn't able to eat it. Restaurant wasn't at fault. I should have asked the question. My friends had no problems.
We had a reservation for 5:15 before an evening performance. Our server seemed to be server, busboy to our table and no less than another 6 or 7. Way too much on this persons plate. This place lacked a GM that could pull in staff to help a dinner crowd that was no doubt all trying to get to an evening show.
The server was good, just overtaxed with too many tasks
As for food, this was our 3rd time at this restaurant. I feel the quality and plate portions dropped from our last visit. I think I’ll be looking elsewhere for a pre-theatre restaurant.
Food was great, portions were huge, service was friendly and prompt. Atmosphere was warm and cozy. Look forward to going back soon.
Perfect place to have dinner before a theater performance. The hostess is always friendly and helpful with special requests. Food is always good. Chef is always will to accommodate special dietary restrictions which is why we keep coming back.
We were very disappointed with the new menu. We've eaten at Soluna many times, but the new choices are very limited. The chicken and waffle entree was especially disappointing... dry, over-cooked, disgusting looking! Of the four of us, only the risotto would be ordered again... Our dinner was a disaster! sorry...
Great pre-show dining option two blocks from the Orpheum. The food was wonderful and flavorful. It also wasn't too loud where you can have good conversation which was a huge plus. I had their almond crusted ahi tuna and it was fantastic. I think that is always on their menu. My son had their fish and chips which he also enjoyed. For dessert we both had the chocolate pot de creme with marshmallows on top. It was good but expected more marshmallows on there. We saw the beef dish and the chicken and waffles go by and those looked great as well. Presentation of the food was nice. Looks like their menus are seasonal which is a nice thing so things change up now and then and are sourced fresh. Would definitely go there again.
Went before attending Hamilton. Food was excellent. Was looking forward to Octopus that was on the Website menu but not on the restaurant menu
Good food. We will definitely put the restaurant on our return list. Service friendly but a bit slow and inattentive. Nice atmosphere and easy to carry on a conversation.
Great food and good service. Given some of the negative reviews we were very pleasantly surprised.
The food as always was excellent but it took almost an hour to receive which is out of character for Soluna. It appeared as though there was only one server and bartender. This is most unusual
for Soluna. It is a go to place for my friends and I before a play.
I hope this was just a bad night as we really like the restaurant.
Only if they are going to the theater
Food was greasy and totally devoid of any veggies!
The food is very good, reasonably priced, in a comfortable stylish ambiance. Fantastic deserts. Service is friendly. Best of all it is relatively quiet. You can easily carry on a conversation. And it is close to the ballet and symphony. A lovely experience.
First time here - turns out to be a really good pre-theater option! The carrot ginger soup was well-balanced and velvety, schnitzel was appropriately crisp and the soft spatzle was it's prefect companion. Delicious pot de creme for dessert! Will be back!
Great choice for after our matinee at the Orpheum. Our drinks and food were delicious. Perfect casual but upscale SF chic environment and moderately priced. Need reservations or risky to get in. Bonus having the Asian Museum practically next door for an impromptu tour. Highly recommend
We had a reservation at 5 pm prior to a play at 7. They open at 5 and believe it or not service was an issue.....slow and slow. Getting our cocktails took forever....my salad was delivered right after my cocktail...what the heck? The bread was burned on the top was not good at all. But, amazingly the entrees were absolutely delicious! Ahi tuna, the Waldorf chicken and risotto were the orders....yummy, yummy, yummy. Even though it was only 90 minutes after opening they were out of their ice cream sandwich desert so that was disappointing as well. I hope they can improve their service as I would like to return, but for now will not.
Everything was good. Not impressed with the dessert we got. Overall everything was nice. A little short staffed.
Food was good but service was a little slow.
Food was good, waiter was sweet, but both times we’ve eaten here it’s taken forever to get the food. If you go before a show, give yourself at least 2.5hrs.
I had a good experience until I found out that the server did not pack the best part of my meal - the fried chicken skin. He made the assumption that I would not want it, when that is the main reason why I would pay $20 for fried chicken and saved it. Devalued the meal.
Soluna's proximity to the theater is its' greatest asset. Nice atmosphere and not too loud. Our table had the chicken and quinoa which was very good. The tuna on the Nicoise salad was a bit tasteless. Service was slow- we were at our table a good 10 minutes before anyone came over to give us water or take our drink order. Surprising as if they are catering to the theater crowd, they should know you are on a limited time schedule. Still would go back, but hope service better next time around.
My favorite restaurant in San Francisco!
Food was fine, dessert was delicious
