We like to come to the Soluna Cafe before we go to the Strand Theater...which is a few blocks away. My husband ordered the Briskest...as he always does and he told me "This is delicious ...best brisket..." I had the Shrimp Fritters which were tasty. For dessert we shared the fruit compot which was yummy. The service was very nice: friendly and helpful. I am happy that the restaurant is a little bit lighter than the last time we were there.
Funky local fooderie. Close to my hotel and very friendly. Very good food and great service. Nice place to eat before you grab a show at the Orpheum (around the corner).
Great place for lunch - the food is fresh and delicious and you are never rushed.
Food was good, but not outstanding. We had delicious cocktails we had four medium plates of which the salad with pears walnuts and great cheese, the Mac and cheese was okay and shrimp was very doughy. Great service and a cozy setting. Very convenient to our event at library.
Bad choice for vegetarians. Macaroni and cheese way overpriced.
Our team did a birthday lunch for a colleague mid-week. We waited over an hour for our food, which came out over the span of 15 minutes. Half the table’s food was cold, burgers way over-cooked, and generally just really poor quality. The waitress seemed busy but in general, no one at the restaurant seemed to care one way or the other. Still tacked on the 18% gratuity with no apology. Several people said it was the worst work lunch we’ve had.
Great food, beautifully presented and delicious. I had the Watercress Chicken entree, which was simultaneously light and rich. Great spot for dinner before theater or ballet.
After going this to establishment a number of times, I was sorely disappointed in this particular dining experience. When we were seated, 2 of the 3 parties (me being one) have back issues and we asked if we could sit in setting with chairs of which there were many. We were told no that they were all booked (this was at 530PM). The server was flippant and told me that there was nothing that could be done. It was a very cold reaction.
I will note that I took photos of empty tables before we left at 640PM for the Symphony that were unoccupied that we could have sat at.
Now on to the food, we started with 1 salad which was delicious and ample in portion. 2 of the 3 of us had the Ahi Tuna, this was a big HIT, the food was delicious, the portion ample, and the tuna done just right. 1 of the 3 of us has the fish and chips and sadly this was overly breaded with little fish and flavor with mashed peas, which were unseasoned and unflavored. We accompanied this with a side of brussel sprouts with bacon, which after 3 times of asking, finally arrived. They were very good, but the service of delivery was slow. Our white wine was ordinary but good. We opted to skip dessert.
Again, the welcoming to the restaurant and the service changed the tone of this dining experience and for this reason, we will not be coming back.
Early dinner before the Symphony. Seated promptly. Food was good, not great. Two of us had the schnitzel mit spaetzle. Although shown as "crispy" in the menu, it amounted to a basic pork cutlet heavily breaded and deep fried. I have traveled frequently in Germany and perhaps I expected that presentation which is pan-fried and benefits from a bit of lemon. It tasted fine, just missed the mark based on my experience. The spaetzle was nicely herbed (thyme, onion) but was a bit mushy. Arugula made a nice cleansing note. One of us ordered the chicken and waffle plate which consisted of a LOT of deep-fried chicken (very tender) and an interesting savory waffle. The honey-sriracha sauce was a nice touch. Service was a ok, a little spotty. The menu suggests you may request bread for the table, which produces a comically small serving. We've been here before and will probably be back in the future.
We have eaten at Soluna many times. It seems to be much, much, much darker than usual...with a giant screen showing a movie. This has changed the ambiance of this restaurant....into a place that, I am sorry to say, feels more like a bar and less like an upscale restaurant. I had to use my flashlight to read the menu!! My husband had the brisket which he said was the best he had ever had...and he has eaten brisket many times! I had the shrimp fritters and they were tasty. For dessert we shared the Pear Cobbler....very good! Our server was friendly and helpful and checked back numerous times.
This restaurant is in financial trouble. They were out of multiple kinds of beers, proseco and liquors on a Saturday night. The place was nearly empty by 8:15.
My recent visit to Soluna I would as "meh." I have had lunch there quite a few times and always liked it but this time I found the food uninspired. I had the carrot-ginger soup which was tasteless and the shrimp fritters which were also pretty blah (although the price of $15 for 5 was a good deal). One of the other diners wasn't too excited about his meal (the seared tuna) but the person who ordered vegetarian (brussels sprouts and patatas fritas) liked both of her dishes a lot. I think the thing that put me off is when of the diners with me asked the waiter (about one dish) "is it good" (I know, not the right thing to ask an employee of a restaurant), his response was "No, we make a point of only serving bad dishes."
Pretty disappointed. The salad was the best thing we ordered. Having to step over homeless walking in and the entrance of the restaurant smelled bad. We selected this restaurant from prior reviews and location to theatre. Not planning on returning.
Ambiance and decor: well appointed but too dark inside at night
Food: horseradish mashed potatoes, mac n cheese = tasty comfort foods, burger with brie wonderfully juicy, fries too crisp like potato chips, brisket wasn't cooked long enough so tough and dry, Brussels sprouts roasted perfection
Service: waitress too in a rush, even though restaurant only half full, so got our order wrong, but corrected quickly, restaurant very accommodating of child age 5 and strategically placed us in a corner
Overall: overpriced for so-so food, can get better quality at Applebee's, but ambiance was quiet and close to Davies Symphony Hall
We frequent Soluna during SF Symphony season due their quality of food, their proximity to the symphony hall and, usually, their service. Due to all of the events taking place in and around Civic Center, the restaurant was much busier than usual. It doesn’t appear that management recognized the need for more waitstaff because the service just wasn’t there.
I have eaten at Soluna once before. Both times the food was excellent....particularly loved the brisket! The first time, the drinks were excellent. Best mixed drinks ever. This time, between us we had 4 different mixed drinks, each one worse than the one before. Soluna needs to send this bartender off to bar tending school! Aside from that...great food!
I have eaten @ Soluna a number of times, especially when attending theater and have been disappointed. My luncheon date was late due to traffic and our waiter never registered any concern or need to order etc. We were catching up and needed a few hours to relax while satisfying our stomachs!
A lovely spot that’s still attractive after some shifts over the last few years. The menu wasn’t exotic, but varied, with a good array of choices. The Cesar salad was especially delicious- for once the dressing amount was perfect - not overdressed as many salads seem to be in restaurants today. We especially enjoyed being able to have a conversation without loud music or hearing other tables. We also enjoyed the banquette seating, which allowed my friend and me to sit adjacent to each other. Our server was appropriately attentive, without being overbearing or ignoring us.
It’s always a good choice for pre concert dining, and an easy option if you’re in the Civic Center area.
We waited over an hour for our food. The wait staff did not check in to let us know why it was taking so long. He finally said the Waldorf chicken takes a long time. We had a 7:30 Symphony date and he was told we were in a bit of a hurry around 6:30. Waldorf chicken was great. My companion’s tuna nicoise was tasteless per her. I shared my chicken so she had something to eat. I like the ambiance except for the view of the door to the men’s room. I asked to be moved to another table and they accommodated the request.
Good spot before ACT at the Strand. Very pleasant atmosphere and excellent service.
It was a Tuesday night, and there was nothing on at the nearby Orpheum Theater, so it was kinda quiet in the dining room. Ok, I had the whole place to myself, except for a dozen or so healthy young'uns enjoying cocktails and light fare at the bar.
For me, Tuesday night IS a theater night, and with ACT's Strand Theater just a short, hair-raising sprint from Soluna, this is a great pre-theater dining spot.
Mark lavished me with personalized, personable service. He has excellent knowledge of the offerings, and made some welcome suggestions.
Cocktail was superb, beet salad was great (lots of fresh, lovely beets!) and my entree was very nice (beef brisket).
Poor Soluna. Used to be crowded at lunch. We waited 50 minutes for our lunch even with a reservation. Finally asked a server where our food was!
Asked for separate checks but didn't get them. Used to be busy, not this time on a Thursday lunch. One very loud group of four was served long before we were, even though they ordered just before we did.
This is a new place for us, and delightful! Fun, interesting food and drink choices. We'll be back.
My husband an I often have dinner here before attending a show at the Strand Theater....which is a short walk from this restaurant. We shared the Caesar Salad and it was very good. My husband had the Brisket and he said that the meat was very tasty...as he liked it...not much fat. I had the Squash Risotto...which was a huge portion and had a very nice flavor and texture. However, I must be honest...a huge plate of Risotto with nothing else on the plate (vegetables? other?) can be a bit boring. Perhaps, in the future, the Risotto can include a bit less of the Risotto and something to add an additional flavor and texture. We shared the Apple Dessert...which was delicious. The service was attentive and very helpful. One more comment: In the woman's bathroom, there is NO LIGHT over the sink...so, I could not see when I tried to put on lipstick. Please put a light over the sink!
Poor service. Server did not stop by at any time to check on things and ask about refill on water and iced tea. Since she did not stop to see how we were doing, so I did not get a chance to tell her the burger was overdone. Asked for medium rare. Got medium to medium well.
Always a great place- not too quiet not too loud and good experience!
The food and value were excellent. There are 2 or 3 dishes I am looking forward to trying when I return. The only down side was service was a bit slow so it took 20 minutes to get initial beverages and over an hour to get our meal. Hoping they were just short staffed.
We were heading to the theater after dinner and the restaurant was within walking distance and provided great food and a nice atmosphere.
Closest good restaurant between the Orpheum Theater and the Civic Center Garage. My go to place for dinner before the theater.
Really slow service. We sat for over 20 minutes before even being brought a glass of water or being acknowledged. It wasn’t busy either!! After finishing the meal, and sitting for another 20 minutes, with empty wine glasses we were finally asked if we wanted dessert. Yes! But 20 minutes ago-and new drinks would have been great! Forget about it! Such a shame because the food was so delicious but the service was horrible!
The food was very good and fresh . The table side guacamole was very good. We had the Mole Pablano and the Camarines en Mole Tamarindo, and Carnitas. All of the dishes were excellent. Highly recommend.
Loved the food! It had been years since we had been to Soluna and weren't very impressed. This visit changed our minds. The strawberry arugula salad was a meal unto itself. We did share it among 3 of us. The butternut squash risotto was divine and the ahi was perfect. We were pleasantly surprised on the quality of the food. Our service was a bit slow in terms of bringing our drinks and getting around to taking our order. Also the waiter didn't have much experience in opening up the bottle of wine that we brought and broke the cork. He must have been new and we gave him some tips. The place did empty out right before the show at the Orpheum Theatre was to start. I would go again and recommend. Parking in a garage is available just around the corner on Larkin.
We sat at the bar. Service was terrible. Bartender made drinks right in front of us but never asked for our order. Fish and chips took forever to get but we’re tasty. They weren’t that busy, no excuse for the poor and rude service from the bartender.
Great spot for pre-theater dinner. Just enough variety.
Have been here at least a dozen times and they continually seem to be reducing their staff to where it's almost impossible to get food, or even water and bread. This was not the server's problem, it seems to be a staffing problem with the restaurant. We love it since it close to the theaters, but 2 hours to get a simple dinner, 20 minutes until we had water even, it's tight to work with theater schedules. The food is always tasty and the help is always friendly, just overworked.
Nice vibe, great location to the Orpheum, and great service. The food and was good, but not exceptional. It was absolutely acceptable and given the lack of nice restaurants in the area, I would definitely go again pre-theater.
Nice, quiet, excellent location for theatre or opera. Great food, great service, meh wine list.
Good pre-theatre dinner. Not as busy as expected. Neighborhood has become more sketchy.
A spot where I felt welcomed. The clientele appeared to be having a good time at happy hour, always a good sign. A decent selection of wholesome foods and good quality wine; I chose the creamy carrot soup and the very excellent strawberry-arugula salad. The potato croquettes though good were a little heavy for my tastes. The Elizabeth Spencer rose I will remember! The pacing of service just right. My personable server took good care of me. Definitely will return.
Waiter was very nice. Menu ok. Mixed drinks were not good. Very tired appearance.
