This is a lovely restaurant that caters to both casually dressed locals as well as those decked out for a special occasion. The food is delicious, however, this is not the place for vegetarians as almost every appetizer and entree features meat. I originally brought my best friend here intending to indulge in their delicious chocolate bread pudding after a high-end spa day we enjoyed for her birthday, but we were starving by the time we arrived and ended up ordering dinner. She’s vegetarian so the choices were sparse. We enjoyed the AMAZING brussle sprouts (my most hated vegetable, but prepared in a way that made me love them!) as an appetizer and shared the gnocchi. The gnocchi was the only issue. Specifically, it is a dish that features chicken and bacon so we nixed those. My experience at the vast majority of restaurants I’ve patronized has been that if you’re modifying a dish by excluding main ingredients the kitchen increases the amount of remaining ingredients to compensate so we were surprised to find only six bite-size gnocchi. They were incredible, but there was too few. Still, the restaurant treated us to the chocolate bread pudding since it was a special occasion which was very cool of them. We had an awesome server and the ambiance was ideal. I will definitely go again!
Loved the restaurant and the food but the hostess should be fired. She was rude and unfriendly. She was mad and kept on yelling at me because I was not able to call (I was 10 minutes late and my phone was out of battery.) I told her that my phone was out of battery and I was stuck in traffic and couldn't call. The third person in our party arrived on time and was seated and there was NO ONE ELSE in the restaurant. She kept on yelling at me that she should have canceled my reservation. I finally said "I got it" and went to my table while my wife stayed behind and she continued to yell at her. Why? A person in my party arrived on time and I was only 10 minutes late. When I called my colleague who recommended the restaurant, he said the same thing happed to him. This person should be fired.
We had the best waitress, Kathleen did a wonderful job! However my Chicken Ceasar salad was dissapointing. The dressing was very salty and I was expecting tender chicken breast but I received a very salty Teriyaki chicken instead... low sodium teriyaki could have been better. Also, the noise level was so high that it was hard to carry a conversation with my husband seated in front of me :-(
I had the 1855 steak and it was very very good cut, but I would have preferred if it was prepared more traditionally with salt and pepper and not the sauce they used. It had a green sauce on it too that was ordinary. Mashed potatoes and a simple veggie would have made it much better in my opinion. My wife had the seafood chowder and the fish was fishy and had no real taste at all. Should have had the fresh fish, it looked like a much better option when we saw it served at the next table. Service was excellent and the drinks were great. Their take on an Old Fashion was tasty! We will try it again and see how it goes next time.
We've walked by this restaurant plenty of times in all of our visits to Laguna, and finally decided to try it. It was just GOOD, not great. The patio is nice, but the tables are so close together, if there is someone seated at the next table, they might as well be dining with you.... zero privacy! The food was good, nothing out of the ordinary. Service was ok also. There just isn't anything about it, that would make me feel like I need to go back, especially with so many other great restaurants in the area. The one thing that did really bother us was what happened while we were still eating. We had an 8pm dinner reservation (we're from Vegas where this isn't a late reservation). While we were still eating, the restaurant cleared out, and the servers started cleaning up. This is expected.... however, we were seated on the patio, and not only did they clean up inside, they started cleaning up outside, including stacking chairs on the tables! Even the tables right next to us... it was very inconsiderate. And most certainly something they could have waited to do when we left!! Maybe we'll try it again, maybe we won't.
We ordered a house specialty dish (halibut) and it was heavy and flavorless. We also ordered the scallops and they were very good. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and the server brought dessert. Very nice touch. I would recommend to a friend if the one wish hadn't been so terrible.
We visit the area once a year-- always go to 230 Forest. Consistently good food and very good service. And we like the "nice" but casual atmosphere. Had their "special" swordfish with a crab at taquito on our most recent visit-- soooo good!
Parking can be a problem especially on the weekends but metered parking on the street is often available-- and free after 7pm.
We were there on September 3rd to celebrate Jane Richter's 83rd birthday. As we were having our appetizer Jane had a stroke. Our male waiter and your manager acted swiftly and called paramedics who arrived in 5mins. Jane and I were taken to Saddle Back hospital and Jane is recovering due to the rapid response of your team at 230 and the paramedics. Thank you for saving a life and being calm, professional and responsive to our needs. You were Gods angels!! Although we did not have our birthday lunch, we will be back to re-celebrate.
Spectacular on every level. We come here every year prior to going to the Pageant of The Masters. We always bring a group and the food, ambiance, service is FUNomenal. This year we took two friends for their 25th Wedding Anniversary. Manager Bernard and Server Patrick were beyond outstanding. THANK YOU! Lisa
