221 South Oak Ratings and Reviews
We have been here three times on separate trips to Telluride. All of the visits have been memorable. The first time (years ago) there was not electricity in Telluride for a few hours. We showed up and were served by candlelight! The food is delightful in flavor and appearance and so fresh. I would call it American-style cuisine with international flavor influences. Our server, Divo, was knowledgeable about the menu and had some helpful recommendations. The wine steward was also enthusiastic and found us the perfect bottle to work with both smoked boar and seared scallops (both yum). The restaurant has a separate vegetarian menu. We ordered from both menus last week and were very pleased with what we chose (Duo of Bruschetta from veg menu). The atmosphere is so cozy and elegant but also somewhat casual. While some people were dressed up, many were vacation-casual. We will be back.
One of my favorite restaurants. Just the perfect setting for a perfect meal. I love the combination of ingredients and flavors. When I am in Telluride, this is a must stop for a lovely meal. Cocktails and wine are great too if you just want to stop in for a drink. I suggest reservations for meals.
Appetizers were good. Gnocchi was terrible. Watery, presentation nice, but taste horrid. Trout good. Serviced with ravioli that could not be eaten. Pasta watery, and filing vile. Have been there multiple times. Sometimes great other just ok. Tonight terrible. Would have preferred McDonalds. Would have saved for 4. $180. Not sure why so bad
Based on 221's menu, was really excited to dine here. Power to the town had been out earlier that day - believe the staff was excited to have the night off; not excited to deal with the public. Checked in and maitre d' was more invloved with answering the phone than seating - or greeting - guests. Ok, he's super busy.
Seated -- and wait staff was really disinterested in providing good service - to match the potential of the menu. Requested small plates for shared appetizers - this was a big deal. Server was really not interested in ensuring our experience was enjoyable. My version osso buco wwas really dry - and served with also dry gnocci which just made it worse. And uninspired asparagus. Mentioned this to server who was annoyed with my comment - with no offer to make it right.
I really enjoy dessert - the menu looked good but after the uninspired and annoyed service, we passed. On coffee, after dinner drinks, the whole finish.
Again, a really disappointing experience. Marginal food made worse with bad, annoyed service.
Outstanding from start to finish. While I feel the deserts have been better in the past, this slight shortcoming was certainly compensated by the vastly improved cocktails, attentive service, carefully curated wine list and fresh, delicious salads. As a vegetarian I appreciate the array of options that rival the standard menu in terms of creativity and variety. It's always a wonderful experience dining at 221, and as an occasional guest I find it exciting to watch how the menu evolves from season to season. Thank you again to all involved in our lovely evening.
The food, ambience and serving staff were terrific. They may great suggestions about the menu and wine and were right on about everything. We ate there twice during our stay in Telluride and heavy been here several other times over the years. Always a must when we stay in Telluride.
Food, service and atmosphere was great until our server told us that somehow the kitchen threw out the portion of my brunch that I couldn't eat and I had asked to have it put in a to go box. They did make me another meal of same portion that I couldn't eat except forgot the fried potatoes and smoked trout that I had a good deal of left originally. Oh well, lessoned learned.
Everything tasted great but was overpriced, even considering the popular location in Telluride. The cocktail menu did not have prices -- the "special" (watermelon caprioska) turned out to be $15 each!!! I had trout with "duo of ravioli" which really is TWO little raviolis. My wife had herb gnocchi which was basically 8 tiny nuggets of gnocchi with some mushrooms and asparagus. Again, everything tasted very good, but we left feeling hungry and disappointed for the price.
