22 Bowens Wine Bar and Grille Ratings and Reviews
Dined here frequently since it opened and used to like it for a lobster dinner on the waterfront. This time the reception was poor, service uneven, food fair, value uneven at best. Reception, we arrived on time for a 6 pm reservation for an informal anniversary celebration. Unfortunately, they seated us along he runway to the restrooms when there were plenty of nice tables available. Service, we asked for fresh pepper for our salads, the waiter showed up his grinder but kept turning it counter-clockwise. Nothing came out. Duh! My wife wanted to reserve part of her salad to eat with the main course. Not once, not twice, but three times a bus person tried to swipe it off the table without asking. Food was meh, unexceptional, and we did not order anything too complicated. The price, one expects market price for a 2 lb. baked-stuffed lobster yet realizing there aren't any supply problems, $72.00 seemed excessive as was $24 for a small glass of mediocre Barolo. Full disclosure, I'm a native and familiar with the problems faced by restaurants in the off-season, but this is a ridiculous and self-defeating form of price-gouging.
The food was good and the portions were big. We were set in the deck area which we didn’t love, as it felt nicer inside. The acoustics were terrible and we even had to move tables because the people behind us were so loud. Our waitress was not good; she never told us the specials, never gave us bread, and passive aggressively gave us our dessert menus without saying a word or asking if we wanted anything else. When we did complain we were told it was her last day and a lot of people complained about her. It just sucks that she affected our dinner experience with our friends while on vacation.
Had the small sirloin which was perfect, a baked potato the size of a football, and a salad which was filled with tomato, cukes, carrots, etc. not just lettuce. Simple dinner but they did it right. Asparagus was good too. Lively fun spot right on the marina.
Visited for a date night at the end of our trip. Cannot say enough good things about the service here. Every member of the wait staff was warm and attentive. We watched a few of them dealing with a rude diner at the table across from us and they handled him with total grace. Very impressed. Food was delicious - definitely try the baked lobster macaroni & cheese. Would definitely return when we're back in the area.
We were greeted by a very pleasant hostess and manager. We had a drink at the bar before dinner with a very nice bartender. We were looking forward to a special birthday dinner as noted in our reservation request on Open Table. But, when we sat down at our table, we waited a good 10 minutes before anyone came over to take a drink order. My husband went to the hostess to see if anyone was going to serve us at all. We almost left the restaurant. A server named Victoria saved the evening by taking the initiative to come over and take care of us. Also, even though we told them that it was a special birthday dinner on our reservation request, there was no mention by any staff member. The food was great, but at these prices, it was a pretty disappointing experience. A better choice for dinner is The Mooring Restaurant. Same owners and within walking distance. Every server there from the hostess to the bus staff are extremely friendly and professional. The food is also consistently good there - never a bad meal or bad service in the many years we've been going to The Mooring.
We had lunch their on our first of 5 days in Newport. Was so good that we decided to go back for Dinner on our last night. We had eaten seafood the first time we were there but both decided on a steak since we had eaten everything from clams to lobster the previous 4 days. She had the filet and it was good. I had a 30 day aged ribeye that was one of the best I have ever had. Service was great! Must eat place in Newport!!!
Ushered to sit outside during pouring rain and howling wind, asked hostess to secure the door which was being blown open and slamming every 5 minutes, which was next to our table, this request was ignored. Waitress was nowhere to be found after dropping off our drinks, we would have left if it wasn’t for the kids were hungry. Food itself was average. Will never return.
My first experience was terrible, Manager was arguing wirh me about what Medium Rare should look like in a piece of meat. Purple is not medium rare! Second chance i gave them and went back a monrh later. Did not order steak but food was great. SERVICE was aweful. Sat for 1 hr before even getting salad and bread. Then another 30 minutes for rhe meal.
Three of the four in our part chose all inclusive meals. The potatoes purée was very good but it was barely a scoop. I had an allergy to mushrooms and asked for no mushrooms but the potatoes had mushrooms atop them so I couldn't eat them. It was our anniversary and they said Happy Anniversary as we walked out the door.
Being an ocean front restaurant, I was expecting more seafood on the menu. The restaurant is more geared to a steakhouse, which was not my on-line impression. Although the appetizers were good, raw clams and shrimp cocktail, the dinner menu was disappointing. Also, there were no pasta choices. I don't think I would be returning anytime soon.
A must if you are in Newport! The food is amazing and the service was outstanding. My husband and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary in RI and the restaurant was recommended to us. Our server was a delight, he didn't hover but was there if we needed him. His suggestions were perfect and we enjoyed our food and drinks. I highly recommend and will go back.
My friend thoroughly enjoyed their steak the week before so he took me there and he ordered the $60- 30 day dry aged sirloin medium rare And they brought it medium well . The waitress was friendly but she didn't come to check on us so I had to flag her down to return the steak . It was extremely chard too. My pasta was delicious but got cold since I felt bad eating my whole meal without him even starting . The manager brought out his new steak but they didn't offer to keep my food warm or a free dessert or anything . I tried A piece of the medium well steak and I was not impressed at all.
Excellent way to start the evening at a ellegant restaurant with wonderful friends. The room had a nice view. The food was great, but a bit on the price side for the portions. The service was great! I would definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to others.
We have been wanting to try 22 Bowens for a couple of years during our Newport visits. The food was delicious and portions were larger than anticipated. The downside of our dining experience was the service. We are a couple in our late 20's and felt our server quickly judged us as not worth her time, assuming we wouldn't spend much money. For example, we overheard her telling another table the evening's specials and realized she didn't share those with us. In addition, when she came to clear our entrees, she quickly presented the bill and said she assumed we wouldn't want dessert. The fact that she didn't even ask or offer us another cocktail really left a bad taste in our mouth. I am not sure if we will return, as our experiences at other upscale restaurants in Newport have been top notch. Though we are a younger couple, we are extremely successful and did not appreciate being pre-judged.
This was our first time at 22 Bowens for dinner and we loved it! They had a 18 oz dry aged sirloin & tomahawk on special! We got both & they were phenomenal! We also had the Grilled Spiced Shrimp, Smoked Beef Short Rib and Chocolate Cake...all were delish!! Looking forward to going back soon.
This is the second time we’ve had dinner here. The first time was wonderful. Fabulous food and one of the best steaks I had had out in quite a while. I have also been talking up the baked potato as it was possibly the best I’d ever had.
This time we were told , even though we had a reservation, we could not sit outside. All through our meal, there was only one table filled outside. There was no baked potato that would be ready for quite a while. The steak was not only tough but flavorless. Of the four people in our party, no one was impressed this time around.
We eat out often and in many venues and for this price point, it simply needs to be better.
