1920 Tavern Ratings and Reviews
We had a great dinner. There were six of us and each of us enjoyed our appetizers, salads, drinks and entrees. I would definitely recommend this Tavern as they have something for everyone, the food was good and the staff was friendly. A bit crowded and loud in the first room but the back room worked out best for us especially since we were a larger party.
The food was very good and the menu had a great variety. I had read a review that mentioned noise and that the back dining room was better. We requested it in our reservation and when we arrived, we were told we would have to wait if we wanted it. Front dining by the bar was very loud. Outdoor or back dining room recommended.
We celebrated my husbands Birthday. Our waitperson was very attentive, patient and pleasant. We were a half hour late and they were still able to accommodate us. We ate in the back area, which is a little more quiet and cosy. I had a great salad with a small fillet added (cooked medium, was a little rare and chewy) my husband had Fillet entree and it was great - tender etc. also medium.
We found the wine list to be limited, although reasonably priced, wasn’t very exciting. We tend to drink “old world wines” they generally have less histamines and sugar. I had an after dinner aperitif which was my choice, but really bad.. similar to Jeager and scope mouthwash :)
Overall, a really nice place and would go back.
A suggestion would be to expand the “small-plates” menu and the European/South American wine list.
Our dinner was good, but the service was a bit slow. I believe they were overwhelmed by a very large birthday party. The restaurant is also extremely loud so was hard to hold a conversation. They have a solid wine list and a nice selection on the menu. I will probably give this place another try at some point - but they need to nail down their service as it was lacking. It took about 25 minutes or so to get our first round of drinks at the table. The owner was extremely friendly though and apologized profusely for the slow service.
We had a reservation for 7pm but were told our table wasn't ready when we got there. That was fine because one of our friends was running late and I understand things aren't always predictable in the restaurant space. It was surprising we weren't seated until 7:30 though. We were seated outside and the table was so terrible. It was right behind the hostess stand and half of our chairs were on I leveled ground so our chairs were extremely wobbly. We were also super close to the people behind us. The service was super erratic and the waitress seemed like she had just come off a bender the night before and was unexpectedly called into work. The food was good but lacked a bit of flavor. We all added salt to our meals. I was dying for dessert but was told they weren't doing dessert that evening. After only 5 minutes of being told this, we see our neighbors being delivered their dessert 🤔The place is a bit of a hot mess. We saw the head hostess doing shots so I'm assuming that's what they let their employees get away with their. Overall it was a weird and less than enjoyable experience. Thank goodness I was in good company.
We were on a girls trip so this was a great find - the food was wonderful and the atmosphere was great too. We did not love our server. He was very distracted, hard to find at times, and also charged us incorrectly for multiple drinks. Other than that, we had a great meal.
We had another fabulous meal Friday night with friends. We started with the hot pimento cheese dip which is to die for! Shared several other small plates including the mussels, calamari and shrimp tacos. Wonderful variety of small plates which are a great value! But my favorite is still their fried chicken (rivals my grandmothers!).
This was our first visit to 1920 Tavern. We were disappointed. The food was over priced. $27 for fish and chips and the chips were homemade potato chips. Our server was excellent and we sat outside on a beautiful evening until a customer came with a large black lab dog. I am not interested in sharing my dining space with a dog even if it is outside. People need to be sensitive of others. Not everyone likes dogs and some have allergies especially if you have asthma. We will stick to Avalon in the future.
The food was good, but my salad, which was really a large tomato stuffed with lettuce, was just ok. The tomato was kind of mealy, which wasn't great since it was the main component. My entree, the shrimp and grits, was delicious though! My husband got the shepherd's pie. He said it was good, but it took so long to come out that people who sat down after us were served before us.
Our table was so uneven that it spilled my martini several times. When we asked the waiter, who was a little too over the top with corny jokes, for something to even out the table he came right back with some plastic tools specifically meant for that purpose. I was a little confused as to why this hadn't already been done considering the table was SO uneven and it wasn't early enough to be the first to sit there for the night.
Very good food on Canton St. As with most "tavern" type places, the gluten-free options are limited. I would not add this to my rotation due to that fact, but those without allergies might do so. They have a gf dessert I didn't try, but I'd go back for that and their house made peach sangria which is amazing! Fun patio scene - very dark inside at night.
The ambiance is high energy and our server was very attentive. Despite the lively bar scene atmosphere in the front of the establishment, the food was top quality. They are not relying on their bar to bring back customers but put a full court press on service, quality of the food, and energy. I would definitely go back try many more things on the menu.
