The restaurant had just reopened after a major renovation and is very attractive, looks more like a garden site than the previous version. The host knew not to seat us near the noisy little kids ( the only little ones there were pretty well behaved). The food was interesting, unusual, delicious, and beautifully presented. The bread (each roll) is in flower pots. One of the desserts is actually shaped like a flower pot. The server was very professional.
The experience was enjoyable, but the food seemed a bit expensive.

Never disappointed at 1906. We travel over 35 miles to get to Longwood Gardens. Longwood is fantastic and 1906 makes the trip more worth while. We were also introduced to a wonderful Pinot Grogio that went well with our lunch. Thank you!

New look is beautiful and menu is diverse. Food is really pricey especially the desserts. I always have to eat there anyway because I love it I just don’t order dessert

The food was bland. I had the maryland crab omelet. It had a lot of crab meat but the egg needed salt and both were bland.

Wonderful lunch experience. Attentive wait staff. Restaurant has been completely remodeled in 2018. Food was excellent. Mushroom soup was delicious as always. We had the most interesting strawberry shortcake for dessert. It was an "action" dessert. You have to see it to believe it!

The menu is bizarre and we are foodies who like good food of all kinds.
Many menu items had to be explained to us, as it was not apparent from the description what was actually in the item. The quality of the food was fine, but the tastes and combinations were strange and we didn't care very much for the things we ordered.

Mushroom soup is good as always.

The absolute best mushroom soup in the heart of Kennett Square, PA.... mushroom capital of the World! The smoked salmon plank was also excellent. The latest available reservation was 3:30 - 5 PM Friday afternoon, so it was a mystery why the restaurant was almost empty?

What a perfect spot to enjoy my daughters birthday celebration! The menu was wonderful, service was very attentive. We started with the vegetable and hummus crudité which is a presentation masterpiece. I enjoyed the chicken salad and oysters, they were perfectly cooked. My daughter enjoyed the bbq Kenneth Square mushroom sandwich. Fabulous new menu, can't wait to go back and enjoy the outdoor deck again!

A Welcome change to a wonderful restaurant. A renovation that perked up the restaurant and a much needed change in menu. The oysters and chicken salad were delicious as was the salmon. Our server seemed to disappear for a bit too long. So we sat and waited. Strangely it wasn't crowded so I could't imagine where he went. However, the prices seemed to have gone up. One appetizer, 2 entrees and one dessert came to around $80.00. A bit high for lunch. Otherwise I would definitely return. A delicious menu.

Has become very expensive. Tables very crowded together. Poor value for the food received. We used to go there 2-3 times a month. Won't go again. since they redecorated it seems like a different restaurant. Very disappointing! Perhaps they are trying to keep the locals out, if so it is working!

A group of eight women, all friends from church, go out for lunch the second Wednesday of each month. In April we decided to take a day trip to Longwood Gardens. It was a lovely outing, and we were excited about eating lunch at 1906.
The restaurant had recently been remodeled, and the decor was beautiful. It was too chilly to sit outdoors that day, but that will be a pleasant option soon.
Our service was great, and the ambiance of the garden theme was very peaceful.
The menu was organized in a unique way and was very different from the last time I had dined there in December.
As always, the mushroom soup and the bread baked in flower pots were the highlights. Six ladies in our group ordered a mushroom pork barbecue sandwich on multi-grain bread with slaw. Although the slaw was very tasty, all of us were disappointed with the sandwich. Some people felt that it was too spicy, and most of us didn’t care for the texture of the mushrooms.
The other two people in the group enjoyed their choices.
Overall, it was a positive experience, but the next time I go to 1906, in May, I will be sure to order something different.

This was our first visit since the remodel and we couldn't get over the transformation. The interior is absolutely beautiful. It's light and opened up, but the upscale touches of marble table tops, velvet booth seating and wood flooring keep the fine dining feel. My personal favorite touch is the plants on the walls surrounding the entrance to the kitchen. It's brilliant, beautiful, and brings the garden into the restaurant. We weren't sure what to make of the revamped menu but of course were not disappointed. From start to finish, the heirloom carrot soup, hummus, lamb chop special, duck breast salad and sorbet trio were all prepared and served to perfection. The staff is remarkable, I cannot say enough about the service that 1906 provides. Our server, Natalie did a wonderful job. Thank you all for an amazing Easter lunch!

Setting and ambience were excellent. Food was imaginatively conceived, perfectly executed and professionally served. Mataki Mushroom was fabulous. Mushroom soup was very good. Portion size on the oat carbonara was a little small for the price. Pulled mushroom BBQ sandwich - mushrooms ought to be crispier.
Overall this was a great dining experience. The strawberry shortcake was a “show” not to be missed!

When dining at 1906 at Longwood Gardens, I anticipated experiencing a bygone era completely different than how we live now. Longwood Gardens preserves the uniqueness of their gardens and I expected nothing less from the 1906. To be fair, the 1906 should be renamed 2006 because that's what it looks like. The floor is fake wood, the tables are fake marble and the decor is no different than a modern restaurant. In an attempt to blend in a garden feel, they have introduced hideous olive green upholstery the likes of which you will fortunately never see in real life. In other words, it's all fake.

The food is interesting but I don't think Pierre DuPont ate this stuff nor did anyone else in 1906.

The service is great which made the experience OK. I hope Longwood Gardens will consider a true 1906 (or early 20th century) restaurant to complement their fabulous Gardens.

My husband and I have enjoyed lunches and dinners at 1906 for years. You always knew you would have a wonderful meal. It was a "fine dining" experience. Sadly not anymore. The new 1906 has a refurbished room with more space between the tables but acoustically it is very noisy. The tables are marble top ice cream parlor style, with either sitting on a bench or black wooden chairs. The room is light an open, but upscale feeling is gone. The biggest disappointment was the menu. It is extremely paired down with "Yesterday", "Today", and "Tomorrow" sections. Each section had about 8 options. Yesterday included mushroom soup, wedge salad, omelet, chicken salad, steak and chocolate flower pot. Today had 2 pastas, chicken sandwich, duck breast salad, salmon and trio of sorbets. Tomorrow was all vegetarian. The wine list is very limited also! Wait staff is still very attentive, and the prices are still at the fine dining restaurant level. So the great dining experience that was 1906 is gone and now is a garden themed restaurant. Good thing there are some great restaurants in the area.

It was a pleasure to visit the new and improved 1906 at Longwood Gardens! As always, the food was excellent and the past, present, and future menu was fun to choose from. Delicious! The wait staff was very attentive and the courses followed each other seamlessly. The restaurant has a new lighter look and is very relaxing after touring the gardens. Great to have you back!

The 1906 at Longwood has long been one of my favorite places to dine because it was quiet and elegant with excellent service and delicious food. However, the powers-that-be made the grave mistake of somehow trying to "update" what was already truly exceptional. The newly redecorated space is now filled with hard surfaces that clank and clatter. The tiny marble-topped tables have one sitting cheek-to-jowl with one's neighbors. All of the elegance has been drained from the room, and one feels as if one has woken up in a middle school cafeteria...

The 1906 never fails to serve amazing food and provide wonderful service. The jury is still out regarding the new look since the remodel. Miss having a tablecloth, seems they have crowded more people in the space and the nose level has increased. For brunch not a big deal but will be curious to see the impact it will have on what used to be a quiet, relaxing dinner.

As longtime Longwood members, we were excited to try lunch at the newly refurbished site and menu of 1906 on the opening day - March 25, 2018. Would have to say we had mixed results. First the good - The renovations do modernize the facility while keeping some rustic touches. They kept the traditional bread in a flower pot. The marble top tables give it a more outdoor cafe feel than a bistro, but I guess that is what they were going for? Creative new menu with sections for "Past", "Present", and "Future" food choices. The mushroom soup and wedge salad (albeit at $16), were very good. The Gem lettuce instead of iceberg along with the fresh ingredients is worth the price. Unfortunately, both our entrees were disappointing. The "Carbonara" essentially was a bowl of oatmeal with some peas, and a few pieces of pancetta in a parmesan cream sauce. The flavor combination and textures were hard to like, as you keep wanting it to be pasta. Knowing it might be risky, I tried the BBQ Pulled Mushroom Sandwich from the "Future" section of the menu. Well, the bread was good, and a few small pieces of mushroom with the sauce was full of flavor. But, most of the filling was huge chunks of very stringy mushrooms, which were impossible to bite through. Even taking them off the sandwich it was not possible to cut them with a knife. And, the kale slaw it was supposed to come with was apparently replaced with a spinach salad that was actually more raw cut up red onion than spinach. With a salad at $16 and a bowl of oatmeal carbonara at $26 for lunch, we clearly expected better. Perhaps we just don't appreciate the creativity, but the only two menu items we enjoyed were from the "Past" section of the menu!

Tried out the recently renovated dining room for lunch. Miss the tablecloths but appreciate the practicality of doing away with them. We were seated late, but were then given a nice table by the window.

The new menu is different but includes some old favorites. The mushroom soup is excellent, and the roll in a flower pot is always appreciated. The VEGETABLE CRUDITÉS with
white bean hummus and pita is a clever idea, with the vegetables arranged over a trellis-like structure, but most of the vegetables were tiny and the very tiny carrots had fragile roots dangling from them -- edible, I assume, but not all that appealing.

I had one issue with the generally excellent service. When my water was refilled, the server leaned her pitcher on the edge of my water glass as she filled it, making contact. I could only wonder how many other water glasses that pitcher had made physical contact with. Ideally, all servers would be trained to leave some space between the lip of the pitcher and the edge of the glass being filled, for sanitary purposes.

The service was excellent and the presentation was excellent. I am gluten intolerant and the chef coached our server as to what I would be able to eat, and there was a decent selection. The way to make it even better would be to indicate on the menu which meals are gluten free or can be easily modified. The only negative comment is that although we had reservations for 3:30, we had to wait quite a long time in the hall for a table.
