Food is always good along with cocktails. Service is slow.
Our server was excellent. He handled the corked bottle of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay wine efficiently & quickly. The food quite tasty. A good experience
This restaurant gets high marks for promptly greeting and seating. The server, Iva, provided the perfect degree of attention. She informed us of the specials, gave us time to enjoy each course but, stopped in to check with us at just the right interval. The food was very nicely prepared, nicely plated and hot when it arrived at the table. I enjoyed the tomato tartar. My husband tried the salad with watermelon. They were both lovely to look at ~ more delicious to eat. For our main courses we chose the striped bass and roasted lamb loin and were equally pleased with palate appeal and presentation. We shared the broccolini side and sorbet trio and reveled in the fresh simplicity of each. We left the restaurant both sated and fueled for a stroll around the gardens to admire Nightscape. Overall, we would definitely return and recommend 1906.
From the moment we entered the restaurant to the the last bite of dessert (The Flower Pot....YUM!) everything was wonderful. The entire staff was very attentive. From the Manager to the young man who was there just at the right time to refill our water glasses. And our server, Natalie, was delightful and very knowledgeable on all the dishes (including the evening's specials). Everyone one at our table loved their meals. The food was superb!
Great dining. Located in Longwood Gardens, one of the best horticultural gardens in the US, will also love 1906.
Certainly a step up from the cafeteria (to which it is attached), but I guess I was naively hoping they had built (or converted) a nice building with great views. Certainly the selection was great, and the local food theme is appreciated. If you are at the Gardens anyway, it certainly much better than the cafeteria. On the other hand, it's not as good as the "stand alone" restaurants nearby. DO NOT make the mistake (as we did) of paying admission just to go to the restaurant. That added insult to injury.
In summary if you are there around dinner, and willing to over pay for a decent meal, you'll be OK. It certainly wasn't a bad experience, just not a "foodie" experience. If you think the restaurant is a destination in and of itself, you will probably be disappointed. If you just want dinner in that area, you can do better.
It was a very nice restaurant with some unique dishes. A bit pricy but worth it.
We had a very good experience - the food was excellent; the dining room pleasant; the service attentive. I usually do not order sorbet for dessert, preferring ice cream. But the cucumber sorbet intrigued me. It was very refreshing and tasted amazing.
It has become a yearly treat to eat at Longwood Garden's 1906 Restaurant when attending the once a year show. The setting and convenience can't be beat and the service is always wonderful. This year we were three couples. Unfortunately, we did not think the menu choices were exciting and were not especially thrilled with our dinners. We all began the dinner with the mushroom soup which is always delicious. Three people had the pork, which came out as ordered but although it was a large piece of meat the consensus was that it was tasteless. Two said the meat was very tender, but one person said it was tough. Two of us had the crabmeat dish with pasta. The crabmeat was white and fresh, however the execution was unimaginative and tasteless. A little grated cheese did help.
The food was prepared tastefully and arranged beautifully. The wait was minimal for our order. If you are expecting your normal menu then this is not the place for you. This is a place that has integrated fresh and innovative ways to energize your everyday foodie...Lemon/Thyme chicken prepared over grits instead of mash potatoes with baby broccoli or a Portobello Wellington prepared with Portobello mushrooms, zucchini and goat cheese over sautéed shallots. This is not for picky eaters who are not able to get out of their comfort zone. If you are expecting a giant plate of food this is not the place for you. However, I thought the portions were small and filling but not tiny or overly priced as you would think that a place like this would be. The only thing I may suggest is having something for Vegans on the menu. With all the fresh ingredients available it would definitely enhance and attract all types of eaters. All in all the experience was great and I would definitely go again.
Great service and wonderful, fresh food that was a perfect addition to our Longwood Garden experience.
My wife and I and another couple spent a lovely day at Longwood Gardens on July 23. One of the high points of our day was the lovely lunch we had at 1906. The food was great and in appropriate quantity. The service was excellent. Also, we appreciate their featuring local goods. We received good value for our money and plan on eating at 1906 again in the future.
Food was great. Ambience can'take be topped. Excellent service.
The ambiance for this restaurant comes primarily from the gardens that surround it. Interior decor can look a little tired and lackluster. Food is creative and often made with herbs and vegetables grown at Longwood Gardens. It's a nice place for dinner before or after a stroll.
Went here for a late anniversary dinner. Excellent. It is a quiet little gem that doesn't get much press. It should. Tasty!
Fine dining at Longwood gardens--you will enjoy the ambience , the food, and the service.
Food was well prepared, menu selections for all tastes. Service was excellent. One of our favorites in the entire Delaware a Valley. Highly recommend.
We were very pleasantly surprised and delighted with all aspects food and surroundings where magnificent
Food was great and restaurant went above and beyond to pack my Mom's foot in ice as she had unknowingly broken her toe earllier that doay and suddenly had swelling and pain
I Was impressed with the food and price. The atmosphere surrounding the restaurant in the gardens is amazing. It is definitely a place to take a date where you have amazingly displayed great tasting food and walk through gardens and talk in a peaceful surrounding. And best of all you can wear shorts so your relaxed.
Our server Patrick was knowlegeable and friendly. The constantly changing menu featuring local (much grown on the property) food is always a delightful surprise . It is a joy to linger sitting in the scenery of Longwood Gardens.
Spent a delightful 1 1/2 hours with best friends having a delicious lunch--especially the mushroom soup and the ice-cream. Loved the surroundings and the quiet, unhurried ambiance so that we could visit without pressure to move on. The wait staff was excellent as well. Would like to have dinner there sometime.
Crab pasta special, gnocchi, and bass were all great.
Tempura beans from the garden on the premises were delicious.
Staff was great and very attentive to our issues with food allergies.
I plan on dining here every time we go back to Longwood!
We dine here about every month or so. The ever changing menu is always brilliant and the vegetables really taste like they just got picked. We've never had a disappointing dish. If you happen to be there for brunch you must try their french toast.
My (now) fiancé and I got engaged earlier in the day at Longwood Gardens and this was our engagement dinner. Reservations were prompt, service friendly, food excellent and atmosphere delightful.
We ate on the outdoor terrace with a beautifully serene and private view of tall trees surrounding us. The food was delicious and the service attentive. We felt well taken care of in a relaxed natural atmosphere.
A beautiful location and wonderful food. Always a special time.
I invited my sister to the Longwood Illuminations show and to dinner at 1906. The whole experience was wonderful! We at at 7:15pm and the show started around 9:15. It was a great relaxing girls night out...just what we needed. The food was delicious and just the right amount. The popovers were wonderful and the special little treat from the chef was very tasty. I would recommend it !
We were extremely pleased with our experience at 1906. However, the striped bass had a slightly fishy taste, and the heirloom tomatoes which accompanied the lamb loin were just plain cherry tomatoes. They also seemed to have passed their prime. On the other hand, the "flower pot" desert exceed our expectations.
The presentation and service were impeccable.
The restaurant was very warm and inviting. The staff friendly and attentive, but not bothersome. Our dinners - salmon and pork tenderloin - delicious. There was a nice mix of people dining that evening - couples celebrating, groups meeting for dinner and even small children. We overheard someone say that they thought children should not be permitted. We on the other hand thought that it was wonderful to see young children learning how to dine with their parents in a beautiful surrounding!! We are very anxious to return...............
The food at 1906 is innovative and delicious. The summer "flowerpot" dessert is our favorite. On Longwood Gardens Member Days, there is a 20% discount.
We enjoy 1906 at Longwood as a special treat when visiting the gardens, and until now have always raved about the food. This visit the food was not up to par. We started with a wonderful refreshing lemonade with peach and Jim Beam. The eagerly anticipated corn fritter appetizer became a game of "find the corn". Should have been called hushpuppies. The little drops of sauce could not save this flavorless fried batter. I ordered the rock shrimp and gnocchi entree, which was just OK - the shrimp had a fishy aftertaste. The other entrees at the table were also rated only OK: Kingfish a bit overcooked; the consensus at the table was that the eggplant side to the pork tenderloin was a truly terrible dish. The service was exceptional, however. Have to assume the regular chef was on vacation.
The one flavor in the sorbet dessert was very terrible --- cucumber lime --- hopefully that flavor will be discontinued. Me and my wife both hated it. Otherwise the food at 1906 Restaurant is very good.
Hopefully a large variety of flavors can be available for the sorbet dessert.
Thanks for being a great restaurant.
This talented chef brings seasonal passion to every dish. Presentation, taste, flavor, creativity and price complete an amazing menu within a breathtaking atmosphere! A special place for any event or occasion. Can't wait to return. My foodie family had their expectations exceeded! Kudos and Bravo Chef & the entire staff at 1906.
1906 is a really nice place to relax and dine in combination with viewing the beautiful grounds at Longwood Gardens. I would recommend making a reservation in advance. The mushroom soup is fantastic and they utilize local produce or produce that are grown on site and incorporate them in all aspects of the menu. For example, the peach bourbon lemonade was awesome and had fresh peaches in it. Substitutions are easily made (e.g. if you don't desire fries, you can change to another side, like the vegetables on the menu). They are always perk for Garden Members is a 10% discount at the restaurant.
We enjoyed our lunch in the dining room. Might have dined outside, but the threat of rain showers kept us indoors. The food was piping hot when served, appetizing to the eye, and delicious. Our sever was pleasant, helpful and attentive to our needs. It was so nice to dine in a restaurant that was not so noisy that you have to struggle to hear the conversation.
Food was excellent - service a little slow and tables are really close together
Everything was perfect, from the service to our dinner, I just wish it wasn't an hour away.
The selections for lunch were varied and interesting. Wellington with mushrooms was exquisite. Salad was exceptional.
I've been a member of Longwood long enough to know their food is always excellent. Our other visit was about 5 years ago, and 1906 was just as good as we remembered. Everything, from the bread served in a tiny pot to the final dinner, bite, was excellent. Our server was very knowledgeable in helping me navigate the menu, as I was not familiar with some of the terminology. His recommendations were spot on. Definitely would like to go again, perhaps for lunch with the kids, since the outside dining makes it family friendly. Also we were too stuffed for dessert so we need to go back!
