Excellent food and service. Of the 6 at the table, 50 percent were vegetarians and we were all happy with the hearty options. My only recommendation would be to offer better dessert options.
When we arrived at 7:45 PM, place was completely empty. We were taking our friends visiting from UK to 1905 for dinner and it was so awkward that this place was deserted. We first decided to order few drinks and then go to some place else but as we ordered drinks and apps, people started walking in and food was good so decided to continue with our dinner. While food is very good but I find it overpriced for the ambiance and setting itself. Ordered shrimp n grits, tuna, chicken and grains in entree and all of them were good,m but can't justify paying 100 bucks for 4 of them.
Great ambiance for a girls' get together. Awesome rooftop, good service, good quality food at a reasonable price.
Food was below average. The caviar and tater tots were a disappointment. The pork belly appetizer was decent but rubbery. Brazed short rib was over cooked and very dry. Ordered a vodka and soda and was not pleased to find they sent out a gin and soda. I ended up drinking it because the waitress took too long to come back. Overall, much better places to eat and drink in the U Street corridor.
What a wonderful surprise. We were visiting DC and chose 1905 for restaurant week. When we pulled up in our Uber we were a little concerned from the appearance of the outside. Inside we were pleasantly surprised and the roof top deck was awesome. Food and service were a 10. Small menu but diverse. Short ribs were amazing. Will definitely return on our next trip to DC.
For Restaurant Week, order 1 appetizer and 1 entrée from the regular menu, plus 1 dessert from a rotating list.
All of the food we ate was outstanding, and so were the craft cocktails.
Definitely worth a return visit!
Checked out 1905 for Restaurant Week and left feeling satisfied with the food and feel of this place. They were gracious with the two appetizers we ordered: big servings of Black Eyed Pea Hummus and Caviar and Tator Tots. However, the Shrimp and Grits left the greatest impression on me--it tasted more Charleston than D.C. Honestly, the menu at 1905 takes the mainstays of American food (ribs, burgers, BBQ, and fries) and elevates them with sides and flavors that are somehow both comforting and complex. Delicious!
Excellent service and food. Will come back and recommend to others.
Made a reservation for dinner. When we got there we were told we could sit upstairs on the outside patio if we preferred. We were not told at all, however, that the upstairs dining area was more so a bar that you could order food at and not like the sit down and eat set up on the regular dining floor. We went upstairs and waited for about 5-10 minutes for menus, realizing that we had to go to the bar to order. The bartender seemed uninterested in helping us with menu questions. Additionally, we were not told that the cocktails served at the regular dining level were not offered upstairs. If I had been told that we would not be waited on nor would the same offerings be included upstairs, we would have dined on the main floor. Additionally, the food was fairly average. We ordered a tater tots with caviar dish. I was not shocked to see what was clearly imitation caviar, but the "caviar" was served in a tiny portion on the tip of a spoon separate from the tater tots. Most of the small portion of caviar ended up spilling instead of making it onto the tots. Additionally, the tots were very plain, tasting like dry, overcooked Ore Ida frozen tater tots. The other dishes we ordered were average, but I was again disappointed that we had to take care of ourselves essentially, and that the cocktail menu was not offered at the upstairs bar. The rooftop is nice so I may return for a drink sometime, but I doubt I will come back to eat here.
So disappointing. There was literally NO ONE else there besides us in the entire restaurant, and I can see why. :-(
The truffle grits and pork belly are my favorite. LOVE IT!
So my friends and I found this place via yelp. The look of the bistro/bar from the street seemed a little sketchy, but once we walked up the stairs, we discovered a nice eclectic space. Everything on the menu looked great. We started with the Xavier and Tater Tots (yummy). The star of the menu was the truffle grits and pork belly! Plus, they offer $16 bottomless Mimosas or Bloody Mary's. Next time I am in DC, I will be back.
My server was amazing (the gentleman from Central Florida). He helped me make great selections that were healthy and tasty.
Anniversary celebrations. I got an email saying we did not show but we were there. Got there early to enjoy the rooftop then went down for dinner.
Great place for our date night! Loved the food, atmosphere, and service!
We had a early reservation and 1905 was quiet, giving us wonderful personalized
service. The appetizer selection featured adventurous options like crayfish quinoa hush puppies and house-made truffle ricotta with heirloom tomatoes and smoked vidalia onions. 1905 is nice little spot just off U Street, a perfect starter for an evening out and about. And don't forget to check out the roof-top bar.
Wonderful food and friendly service - will definitely be going back!
Great neighborhood gem, one of my favorite restaurants in DC. Amazing food and great brunch!
Witha a fantastic roof deck, unfortunately it rained but part of the deck is covered and still managed to enjoy bring up there after brunch. Looking forward to next visit!
Had a great time at 1905 for my date on Tuesday! This was my 4th time coming and they never disappoint. Service was great, even with a new server. Food was delicious and the lowkey jazz music set the mood for us perfectly. Will definitely be back for Tuesday all-day brunch and happy hour!
Stopped in here before going to see a movie nearby. Service was attentive and informative, food was great. Definitely want to come back when I've got more time to enjoy the atmosphere.
The restaurant was empty at 6:45 on a Tuesday, which was not a good sign. The service was prompt and courteous, but the food was extraordinarily bland. Neither myself nor my date finished our meals. I will not be back.
Cornbread and butter was amazing. Enjoyed my shrimp and grits as well. My waitress was wonderful. It was EXTREMELY loud in the dining area-- the waitress had to lean in so I could talk into her ear to make my order and I could barely hear my date. We Went upstairs after dinner for a drink and the patio had a private party. So we were all crammed onto the tiny bar portion of the roof deck unable to move. It was very cramped and we chugged our drinks to leave asap.
This was an outstanding meal - great food, excellent friendly service, and fun casual vibe. Definitely will be back next time I'm in DC!!
1905 is really seems more like a bar that serves better food than the rest. The food we had was lovely- pork belly, beet salad, heirloom grains, among others. The food wasn't amazing, but quite enjoyable. The terrace is really set up as a bar, and the main floor has more comfortable restaurant style seating and bar.
1905 is a terrific place to enjoy a leisurely Saturday/Sunday brunch or a late evening cocktail. The food is fantastic and the view from the roof is one of the best kept secrets in DC.
Chicken and waffles are the best. Don't let the outside look of the building fool you.
A little hard to find but worth it. Loved the cheeseboard and the shrimp and grits. Great drinks too.
Hearty brunch with lots of vegetarian options. The pastry basket...so great.
Best brunch I've had in a while. Chicken and waffles was possibly life-changing.
We went here for a birthday brunch. Did not disappoint bottomless drinks for $15! Would recommend the pork belly grits!
The food was excellent. We started with the burrata, which was outstanding. For my meal, I had the heirloom grains, which was super homey and delicious; great comfort food. The only complaint, really, is that the seats are uncomfortable, especially the janky church pew-like benches. I'd call this place a hidden gem.
The vegetarian food options were good, but not great. The cornbread was good and soft. However, the thyme-honey butter was too hard to spread without smashing the cornbread. I ended up spreading the butter on the bread that came with the hummus. That worked much better. The hummus was solid. The cauliflower steak was good. The truffle in the grits was an interesting touch, but perhaps a tad bit too aggressive. The service was excellent and the staff seems knowledgeable.
We live in the neighborhood and have wanted to try 1905 for a while. Our overall experience was outstanding. The food was delicious, there were plenty of vegetarian options, and our server was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The restaurant is small and cozy which made it a bit loud, but it wasn't intolerable. Can't wait to go back!
Didn't really wow us, our table was squashed in next to a service cabinet, none of our entrees were memorable. If we lived nearby this would be a couple times per year place, but we don't. Next time we're back to U street we'll try something else.
Food was good. The service was not bad. There was only one person on the wait staff for the entire floor, which didn't seem like enough. The server was pleasant but busy, and sometimes inattentive. For instance, there was a knife on the floor beside the next table and no one from the wait staff noticed or bothered to pick it up.
I had high expectations going in, and they lived up to every one.
Great ambiance, eclectic and food was terrific.
We found this online by others while vacationing in DC.
I would reccommend this to anyone.
This place is always a hit! We take all of our out of town guests to 1905 and it never fails to impress. From JB's amazing cocktails to the creative and delicious meals and cozy atmosphere you just can't go wrong. The rooftop bar makes this popular in the summer but it's just as good in the winter.
Lovely atmosphere. will have to go back for the bar. Food was great. interesting cocktails
