Food and the service is really great! We will definitely go back for another dinner or lunch.
This is a lovely place to enjoy unique cuisine. The environment are staff are pleasant. The pastry chef prepares scrumptious desserts.
We had reservation for 7:30 . We were seated right away -they were not busy. we didn't see anyone for drink or water or anything until 8:00. Waitress was great just had too many tables she was going all the time was not her fault we still tipped 22%. We have been here lots of time because we loved the food! This time I felt like I was at the Denny's -the food was just iffy and the coffee was cold, potatoes where like instant and the fish was awful and appetizer was terrible. It had to be a off night I am hoping because it has never been like this. We got out of there at 9:45 and it was not crowded. I took forever to get drinks so mostly we visited over water.
Service was great, food was just above average! I had the half rack of ribs and it was only 5 bones and short bones at that, most half racks have 7 if not 8 bones!
Merquez in Flagstff! Best lamb-burger ever! Nice touch with the tzatziki, too . My kids can use their dining dollars from NAU meal
Plan & get excellent food
We had a 4:00 reservation for Easter dinner and were seated right away. The prices were high, which we expected, but was surprised at the price for a top sirloin and that there wasn't rib eye, new york, or a better cut of steak offered. My daughter's steak was overcooked and we were served a basket of bread half way through the meal. We had received an email offer for a free appetizer and the server was going to charge us the difference to get the large order of wings. We had to point out the happy hour pricing, which was the same value as the coupon. The tater tots were really good. We were glad we were using our daughter's dining dollars that will expire at the end of the year.
Went on a date here and made a reservation in advance, which I showed up too early for but still was seated right away. We had Chloe as our server who was very friendly energetic, and made sure to check on us just enough to make sure we were okay and had enough water. We had a Thin Mint Martini or Margarita (do not remember which it was, but it was a bit rich and amazing), and an Old Fashion. For an appetizer, we had the calamari and the pieces were medium sized with perfectly crispy breading and light tomato sauce to dip them in. For entres, I had the Rockfish which I had never tried before and it was AMAZING! My boyfriend had the Hanger Steak which he said had the perfect amount of spices and he ate it all. For dessert, we each had this toasted meringue that enclosed mint ice cream and a brownie within. This was rich, creamy, and should be shared because it is way too sweet and too much to each by only one person. We weren't rushed to leave, and were well taken care of overall.
The rockfish tacos--old food -- yesterday's slaw, nothing fresh about the fish. The marinated red onions, however, were excellent
1899 was too expensive for the plates served. The combinations on the plates were ‘different’. The mashed potatoes were weak and lukewarm, green beans (vegis) wanting. ‘Salmon belly salad’ sounded unappetizing and unappealing.
Food was good, service was good, menu was unique with local flavor... I'd go again.
The kitchen seemed to be dysfunctional. They did not tell our server that the fish was not available until she took our order there. I think it was the only fish on the menu, cutting many of us short. They made the wrong salad.
Will go again only when attending event at Prochnow...and there was one from out of town who will not return at all.
My wife and I had eaten there before and had a WONDERFUL experience. We went there this time and everything changed. Apparently the executive chef decided the menu needed to change so he put stuff that was more healthy. Also it seemed more geared toward the college crowd. We stayed at the hotel directly across the street and were excited to return to a place that had given us such a wonderful experience before. The menu had nothing that my wife would eat. For me I wanted a steak but settled for a hamburger. Problem was it came with cheese. When I said I didn't order cheese the response was that was the way it came. Bottom line the place catered to the college and not to the people staying at the hotel. Shame on them. The executive chef needs to use a little more common sense when making his menu.
Hostess wasn't accommodating and a little rude. Food was very disappointing . The waffle pretzels were good, but the nachos were gross (the flavor of the meat is what I think ruined it) and the mac n cheese tasted like it was from a box and the meat wasn't very good. The waiter and waitress (waitress was training new person) were very nice and helpful. For being such a nice restaurant and seeing some good reviews I was completely disappointed. Definitely will not recommend.
yall had no chicken nuggets for the dinner option. highly disappointed. also overpriced. :) no ice cream either
the new menu is confusing and the staff were not able to answer questions regarding it.
We enjoyed a delicious dinner to celebrate our anniversary. This was our first time at the 1899. The menu is brand new, too. Steaks were perfectly cooked. The cauliflower side was unique and worth trying if you like wasabi. It was a great experience and we will return.
Had a delicious dinner. Son graduated from NAU and celebrated with dinner here. Food was delicious and staff was very knowledgeable
I took my boyfriend there for his birthday and we absolutely loved it! Very nice and a fancy place to eat. Loved the environment and the setting this restaurant presented. The waiter was very kind and someone was always watching your glass to make sure it wasn't empty. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
Love 1899 Bar and Grill. The service and food are both excellent. It’s s great place for a special occasion or just a delicious meal.
I have enjoyed this restaurant on more than one occasion. Each time I have been pleased with both the service, food and parking. I noticed that the menu has been somewhat downgraded to accommodate more of a college crowd, hence the reason for 4 stars. I still recommend this restaurant.
Great food and service! Not sure they read the special instructions so I would encourage you to call and remind them if a special occasion or what not.
This is a nice place inside with good service but the food is just ok. It’s expensive for lack luster food. Skip it.
Felt like a diner ... very bright lighting even during 7 pm dinner seating. Presentation was beautiful but food was mediocre. I ordered the pork and although the flavors were good, the pork was overcooked. My daughter chose the restaurant based on its vegan menu item but neither she nor I cared for the dish and it went uneaten. Our sever was very sweet and I tipped her well, but she didn't manage the timing of drink delivery, order taking, food delivery, etc well. Will try a different restaurant during our next visit to Flagstaff
Service was excellent, very friendly. Only complaint was a limited menu. Love what has been done to the original Union at NAU.
Meh. Mehmehmehmehmehnehnehnegnegnegnehmehmeh meh meh.
As always, excellent food and ambiance. We were in town to scope out some wedding venues for our son and his fiance. Since we were staying at the Drury Inn and Suites, it was convenient to simply make a reservation for dinner at the 1899. And since he's a NAU Alumni we wanted to support a restaurant that is attached to the university.
It’s a bit loud, but that’s part of the fun and lively atmosphere. I just wish the lights were turned down a bit, the Lightly in the dinning room is so bright, I felt like I was under a spot light.
We went to dinner at the 1899 Grill prior to attending the Flagstaff Symphony. Despite several hundred NAU students standing in line for another event, but making it look like we might have to stand in line, we were greeted warmly and told why the students were there waiting. They were expecting us, seated us immediately. The food was great, served in a timely manner, and very economical as my husband and I share a plate. We ran into friends but had no problem getting our food, bill, etc. so that we had plenty of time to get to the concert. Wait staff and hostess very accommodating. Our friend left her keys there, but they were waiting for her when we returned. Lovely evening.
Food was outstanding- however the service missed the mark. The staff appeared awkward and inattentive. It seemed like it was a group of inexperienced students who had just been given uniforms that day. Definitely did not know how to communicate or keep an attentive eye on the guests.
1899 was a great place to take on a date for my Girlfriends birthday. The fact that they take Dining dollars was really helpful.
Great place to eat when you are visiting family at NAU. Great location, interesting menu and great food.
The food is good and well seasoned. The staff is always friendly.
It was welcome week and the flyer sent to all freshman at orientation started the was happy hour till 9 all week. They were unable to honor that. The Ceasar salad dressing was the kind made with mayo. Everyone seemed in a rush to leave. Cafeteria atmosphere with a few fancier things. Not worth the money.
My sandwich turned out to be very spicy and was too "hot".
Management said they wanted all customers to be satisfied - so they comped my sandwich.
Very nice of them to do this.
I was rather surprised when arriving as the restaurant is rather large compared to the intimate feeling that one saw in the photos on their web site. Service and food were both excellent. Try the mixed grill excellent as was the asparagus soup.
The 1898 Bar & Grill was wonderful as always. It's our favorite place to dine when in Flagstaff.
Soup and salad were excellent. Salmon entrée' was bland. Wine was good. Service was excellent. Overall, nice restaurant for a quiet meal.
We had the Mexican White Shrimp and the "All Mixed Up" (ribs, steak & pork belly). They were outstanding. Perfect. Service was impeccable; and all were very friendly and sociable. I highly recommend this restaurant.
We attended 1899 with our son for Mother's Day Brunch- the taste of the food and service was good, however, we all felt that for a Mother's Day Brunch, some traditional brunch items were missing. Instead of an omelette station, there was a pasta station, no fruit or salad bars. There were scrambled eggs but with mushrooms, scallions and more. Sometimes too much is just too much. The only breakfast items were those and bacon and dark chocolate french toast- which was not very good. We also paid $35 per person, and were charged extra for coffee and orange juice- at every other brunch we've been to, those plus soda have been included. I think if you're going to do a Mother's Day Brunch, you should do it well, or just stick with menu items. We weren't impressed with their brunch.
Took my family at the end of the year to spend the remainder of my Dining Dollars. I had gone a few days earlier for a birthday dinner with friends and had a wonderful meal with a great waiter. However, the server for my family lunch was not very good. He was quite slow and when it came time to pay for the meal he mixed up the charge with another table. It took awhile for him to charge me the right amount, but I ended up still getting charged for the other table. He lost me $33 Dining Dollars that I never got back. I was very disappointed by this and the fact that it was never remedied even though it was brought to multiple people's attention.
