1899 Bar & Grill Ratings and Reviews
I took my boyfriend there for his birthday and we absolutely loved it! Very nice and a fancy place to eat. Loved the environment and the setting this restaurant presented. The waiter was very kind and someone was always watching your glass to make sure it wasn't empty. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
I have enjoyed this restaurant on more than one occasion. Each time I have been pleased with both the service, food and parking. I noticed that the menu has been somewhat downgraded to accommodate more of a college crowd, hence the reason for 4 stars. I still recommend this restaurant.
Felt like a diner ... very bright lighting even during 7 pm dinner seating. Presentation was beautiful but food was mediocre. I ordered the pork and although the flavors were good, the pork was overcooked. My daughter chose the restaurant based on its vegan menu item but neither she nor I cared for the dish and it went uneaten. Our sever was very sweet and I tipped her well, but she didn't manage the timing of drink delivery, order taking, food delivery, etc well. Will try a different restaurant during our next visit to Flagstaff
As always, excellent food and ambiance. We were in town to scope out some wedding venues for our son and his fiance. Since we were staying at the Drury Inn and Suites, it was convenient to simply make a reservation for dinner at the 1899. And since he's a NAU Alumni we wanted to support a restaurant that is attached to the university.
We went to dinner at the 1899 Grill prior to attending the Flagstaff Symphony. Despite several hundred NAU students standing in line for another event, but making it look like we might have to stand in line, we were greeted warmly and told why the students were there waiting. They were expecting us, seated us immediately. The food was great, served in a timely manner, and very economical as my husband and I share a plate. We ran into friends but had no problem getting our food, bill, etc. so that we had plenty of time to get to the concert. Wait staff and hostess very accommodating. Our friend left her keys there, but they were waiting for her when we returned. Lovely evening.
Food was outstanding- however the service missed the mark. The staff appeared awkward and inattentive. It seemed like it was a group of inexperienced students who had just been given uniforms that day. Definitely did not know how to communicate or keep an attentive eye on the guests.
It was welcome week and the flyer sent to all freshman at orientation started the was happy hour till 9 all week. They were unable to honor that. The Ceasar salad dressing was the kind made with mayo. Everyone seemed in a rush to leave. Cafeteria atmosphere with a few fancier things. Not worth the money.
We attended 1899 with our son for Mother's Day Brunch- the taste of the food and service was good, however, we all felt that for a Mother's Day Brunch, some traditional brunch items were missing. Instead of an omelette station, there was a pasta station, no fruit or salad bars. There were scrambled eggs but with mushrooms, scallions and more. Sometimes too much is just too much. The only breakfast items were those and bacon and dark chocolate french toast- which was not very good. We also paid $35 per person, and were charged extra for coffee and orange juice- at every other brunch we've been to, those plus soda have been included. I think if you're going to do a Mother's Day Brunch, you should do it well, or just stick with menu items. We weren't impressed with their brunch.
Took my family at the end of the year to spend the remainder of my Dining Dollars. I had gone a few days earlier for a birthday dinner with friends and had a wonderful meal with a great waiter. However, the server for my family lunch was not very good. He was quite slow and when it came time to pay for the meal he mixed up the charge with another table. It took awhile for him to charge me the right amount, but I ended up still getting charged for the other table. He lost me $33 Dining Dollars that I never got back. I was very disappointed by this and the fact that it was never remedied even though it was brought to multiple people's attention.
Excellent food preparation and delicious overall. I'd like to see more appetizers or at least one entree that is designed as a low-cost option, rather that a "full entree" at full market price. I am pleased with the entrees and the appetizers, but would like to see a rotating option that would be suitable as a "half-entree", or a sampler, for $12-15, for instance?
It was nice, however the service wasn't all that great. We didn't get our water till 15 minutes later and then our actual drinks didn't come for awhile. It felt we were forgotten at some points. Our drinks took forever to be refilled and the food portion was disappointing.
Came in for Anniversary dinner on Valentine's Day. Very noisy music, too many kids walking through couldn't enjoy our dinner. Came with my service animal and was put almost directly in the center of the restaurant. Asked for a booth but was put at a table, although we didn't get the "specials" our food came ala carte. Not what we were expecting to say the least. For the $200 we spent , this was a disappointment. Meal had to be remade as it was over cooked. Thus wife was finished with meal before husbands was ready to serve again.
We had the white shrimp and the mixed up grill and a bottle of wine. The shrimp was great. The ribs were good, the pork belly was more fat than meat, and the beef, even cut against the grain was chewy. The shrimp tacos were excellent. We ordered a Spanish garnacha for dinner and they were out but figured it out quickly and came back for a substitute. My wife and I both attended NAU for graduate school when the building was the student union so we had a fine time remembering what the building looked like in the 80s. We had an early dinner as my 90 year old Dad was with us. It was fairly quiet when we started dinner but the volume swelled as the students came in for their bowls of mac and cheese- which they all seemed to enjoy! Vincent Z provided some light guitar jazz- the sound was very clear but it was too loud, it was difficult to chat at the table and be heard above the music.
