1899 Bar & Grill
Prices were good and the quality of the food was good. The service was excellent. The only things I would recommend better was that the drinks weren’t cold so the ice melted almost immediately and one of the steaks was a tad over cooked (med ,not med rare). But overall everything was great the food was delicious and I cannot express enough how good the service was I wish I could remember our servers name for a shoutout.
Maybe my error but didn’t recognize this to be NAU campus food service. Our young waitress kind but not too responsive. Surmised this would be a challenge so staying with the basics ordering a NY strip, medium rare and a Caesar salad. Asked what bourbon was available and only a blended whisky was available so cancelled the old fashioned and whiskey on the rocks it was. No Romaine lettuce we were told later so whatever green available I accepted. The steak well done and dry. The cocktail my wife ordered tasted like lemon juice and vodka. The tab $100. Not worth it. I almost never write a review of anything but this was truly disappointing.
The food and the service at our table of four was very good. Two of us had the salmon salad which was excellent. Fresh and tasty. I also had one of their specialty cocktails which was very good.
We chose to sit outside on the covered patio which was clean and spacious. My only complaint was that the patio lacked any ambience. Stark and undecorated. While we didn't eat inside it, on the other hand, appeared inviting.
Kayleigh was very sweet she tended to our every need. Our dinner was amazing.
Next time that we are back in town we will definitely have dinner here again.
The only thing I would add is using white tablecloth’s on tables. It would add to the ambiance
Fantastic! Server was very nice
Great outdoor seating area with great food. Highly recommended.
Food was excellent, we sat in the patio and the fan entrance to where the waitor went through was very loud. When we were speaking amongst ourselves we couldn't hear each other and had to wait until the door closed. I noticed a couple moved away to another table because of that.
Great food, was well taken care of at the bar!
The drinks weren’t blended enough. The entrees weren’t good at all.
Visiting Flag for a day. Pretzel was good, and massive. Didn’t like the yellow mustard or marinara served with it. Would have just asked for cheese for all three dipping sauces. Salmon was great.
The menu was still somewhat limited because of coming out of the pandemic.
Filet was very tender. Lacked seasoning.
Mac and cheese dish was very good.
Chicken tenders were over fried, breading was very too heavy.
Fracaccia bread was excellent, light, yet crispy grilled.
Food was excellent. Workers were very friendly but service is not over the top because of perhaps student workers, not experienced restaurant staff. Would go back occasionally.
First two things we tried to order they didn't have. Dressing on my salad was so sweet I didn't want to eat it. Server was so inexperienced she didn't offer to replace it.
A very boring experience!
An unexpected experience. Staff was friendly & professional.
Our dinner with drinks was very enjoyable & delicious.
We would return again when we return to the Flagstaff area.
First time visiting this restaurant and we didn’t know what to expect. We made an early reservation 5:30. Parking is an issue if you want street parking, permit only. The parking garage is right across the street and the restaurant validates. My husband and I ordered the fillet mignon. A large fillet very tender sitting on a bed of pesto smashed potatoes with a side of asparagus.
The ambiance was very pleasant and quiet. All the servers were college kids as the restaurant is located on the U of A campus. We were pleasantly surprised with the service, food and presentation.
Students running the restaurant
A beautiful, contemporary setting that belies the historical-sounding name "1899 Bar & Grill. We only had steak kabob and spinach dip appetizers but they were very good, enough so that I would be confident in trying one of their steak entrees. Somehow this spot was not listed during my earlier online searches for a steakhouse.
The restaurant is on the campus of Northern Arizona University. It is very easily accessible. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The food was good and atmosphere was quiet. Nice place to have a lunch or dinner. Nice place to dine if visiting the area. We were staying in Sedona/VOC and made a stay day visit to the Grand Canyon. It was nice to have a good dining experience in Flagstaff.
I was expecting a lot more for the 1899. Not necessarily fine dining in Flagstaff, but something that might come close. The host was abrupt and not very patient even given that there were no other people waiting to be seated. The seating itself was spread out and limited per local covid restrictions which was nice to see. Our server was friendly, polite, courteous, and prompt to attend to our needs. We ordered four meals, and only one of use was happy. My daughter had ordered the Mac Works and found it tasty and filling. I ordered the Fish and Chips. The fish size was just over what you'd get from a McDonalds Big Fish Sandwich. It was undercooked, and there were not many fries on my plate compared to what my wife received with her meal. My son ordered Chicken Tenders and they were overcooked and under flavored. Over the years I've heard a lot of hype behind this restaurant. My daughter finally convinced us to give it a try, but the food quality left us with leftovers and heavy snacking when we got home.
Server was fantastic, food amazing. However our initial greeter/host made our experience difficult. My original reservation was for a party of 4 due to website restrictions. The restaurant was closed Monday so I called Tuesday the week of my reservation. I talked to a gal, didn’t get her name to change my reservation to a party of 6. She was accommodating & helpful. She put me on hold to verify space for the larger party and confirmed we could change to seating 6 people. When we arrived however, the gentleman host indicated our reservation still showed 4. I explained that I had in fact called to update it earlier in the week. In return the host was very short, with tremendous attitude the inconvenience I was causing. I reiterated that I had called and was very cognizant of the capacity restrictions but did my best. After much attitude he agreed to allow us to be seated but only if we could be finished in 1 hr 30 min no longer. I didn’t think that would be an issue, of course depending on our service. The server & rest of the staff we encountered were great. When the food was delivered the same gentleman host brought some of the dishes and made sure to practically slam done the plates, enough for us to turn our heads! Once we were close to finish eating he circled the table several times almost glaring to remind us of how long or much time remained in our dining. I think this behavior was unnecessary as I had in fact made the change and was not my fault that their system wasn’t updated. I even had phone log confirming that I had call as I indicated. I would recommend this restaurant based on food & server/bar, but triple check with the host stand on any reservation to avoid the unneeded issues.
Everything was great until the main course showed up at the same as the appetizer. This should never happen at a high end establishment.
My entree was barely lukewarm warm. NY Strip and smashed potatoes (chunks of potatoes) was my entree. Totally unacceptable.
Got a bit sick, over priced, had a reservation but wasn’t sat down until twenty minutes after.
I had been looking forward to trying 1899 since my son started NAU in the fall. Due to Covid, I had put it off because I really didn't want to do takeout. I wanted to dine in the restaurant. This past weekend, I finally got my chance and I was not disappointed. The restaurant was very nice inside, our server was very good and the food was great. The menu selection was really good as well, made for a difficult decision. Everyone at our table ordered something different and everything was very good. We topped it off with a fantastic dessert and walked away happy. I will definitely be going back!
My family enjoyed our visit to this restaurant. While the kids' menu offered a nice selection of choices then actual menu did not. That being said, the server happily made a substitution and checked back with us frequently.
The creme brulee was delicious!
Everything good - and I know it is a “training restaurant” but there was much too much checking in. It felt like every 5 minutes there was a “check in”. Otherwise very good.
Great place on NAU campus. You get the feel of history and a great steak house. Service was excellent!
Wonderful night and meal in Flagstaff while traveling to Coronado.
Great food! Everything on the menu is a bit expensive but you really do get what you pay for. With Covid, there’s less tables which means less noise so it’s a peaceful and fast dining experience!
Incredibly delicious food! We tried three different entrees and two desserts and loved everything. Honestly, you can't go wrong! It's right on the NAU campus and super convenient to everything in Flagstaff.
Veggie burger and fries AWESOME. Service was friendly. Patio beautiful
Wonderful experience. Attentive staff. Diverse menu, even had vegan offerings. Food was presented nicely.
Our service (Clayton) was amazing. We were in from out of town and he helped with menu selections for us and our children. The food was fantastic!
Great setting and service, currently limited by social distancing. Nice variety of choices.
The salmon was excellent.
Food and service was great
1899 was an incredible restaurant. The ambiance was incredible, I felt completely undisturbed the whole meal, and the food was cooked perfectly to my order.
Not what I expected. Just so-so. I guess being on the campus of NAU I should have lowered my expectations.
It was a good place to eat with my family when they came up to visit. The service was exceptional and quick! It was also pretty quiet so it was enjoyable
The food was flavorful and a variety of choices..Enjoyed the chicken Marsala and it was delicious. Make a reservation as seating is limited due to COVID protocols
