About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
A foodie gem just outside Abergavveny in the picture postcard hamlet of Cross Ash, the 1861 Restaurant has caused quite a stir among Wales' gastronomic elite. Boasting two well deserved AA Rosettes, 1861 is the brainchild of chef Simon King and his wife, and front of house lead, Kate. Between them, Simon and Kate have several years experience in the restaurant business - and it really does show. Set in a beautiful old house complete with wood beams and original fireplaces, 1861 is welcoming and comfortable yet refined while service is of the very highest standard. The 1861 menu is produced using lovingly sourced ingredients produced nearby - often on neighbouring farms or at Kate's father's nursery - to ensure traceability and sustainability.

Our first visit to 1861 - for our wedding anniversary. A glorious Good Friday!...I thought that the restaurant would be busy as we were 'time restricted' to a 12.30 table...but very quiet...perhaps a bit TOO quiet for me!..this is a 'special restaurant' and the credentials of Simon, the Chef...explain why. Food was excellent...not 'twee', but full of interesting flavours etc. Excellent wine list. We will definitely return, but I think that my 'older' husband enjoyed it more than me. It would not pay to visit 'frequently' but season by season...it would be good to go. Service excellent from the Chef's wife. I found it a bit of quizzical experience and cannot quite put my finger on why........

Unfortunately we were the only persons in the restaurant for most of our visit. The waitress was a little severe in her method of service and we sensed we needed to leave before we prefered. The food was acceptable but very expensive for the type of restaurant it is advertising. I realise it’s always a problem when you are the only party eating.

This is an outstanding restaurant. We were warmly welcomed and had a pre-dinner drink with delicious homemade snacks in a cosy bar. We had ample time to make our choice from a very attractive menu. The ambience in the restaurant was very relaxing. The food was outstanding, cooked with imagination and finesse. The produce was ethically and often locally sourced. The vegetables, grown in their own garden, were full of flavour. The Welsh lamb from a local farm was delicious. The sharing plate of beautiful crafted desserts were wonderful. Coffee came with delicious petit fours. We had a great evening and we cannot fault this restaurant, which we highly recommend.

Everything was just fantastic. Everyone one of the 7 courses on all 4 plates was eaten with anticipation of the next.

Told by restaurant that could only have 12:30 slot, however on arrival could see plenty of empty tables and nobody else arrived. Seems that bookings are for restaurant convenience? Food pretentious -we all ordered the beef roast which was tasty, but vegetables weird selection and Yorkshire puddings not good. Service was friendly and efficient. Would not go again.

We were 15 minutes after our due arrival time and were greated with "I was just about to call you I didn't think you were going to turn up" !

Had lunch at this restaurant having heard good things about it. They do a great set meal as well as à la carte. It's a lovely place, and a great place to spend a couple of hours, eating some very good food. The French onion soup was lovely. Delicate yet full of flavour. The rouille was very light. The pudding - stem ginger 'floating island' with some rhubarb was beautiful. Light yet beautifully flavoured with the stem ginger. For me, the lamb with apricot was probably the weaker dish. I found it a little bland, but may be to others taste. Would definitely go again though, and overall very enjoyable

Great dinner. Think decor could have been updated slightly, but otherwise service and food great. Would highly recommend!
