Simply wonderful - the staff, the food, the ambiance.
Ambience is extraordinary in a superlative traditional way. Rooms are small enough to be intimate and QUIET enough for conversation in a normal speaking voice.
Always an elegant place with good food, excellent service and great ambiance. It is not noisy,
so we can talk. We love the round table which we always ask for and get it...
I have to say, this time my order of swordfish came cooked too much which made it kind of dry, but I did not complain as I was one of the hosts.
However, all in all, it is a great restaurant. Valet parking is very convenient.
Nice intimate setting with first class, well timed service of courses. Highly recommended.
Another excellent group dinner at 1789. Their menu is fantastic and they have an outstanding wine list. Service was impeccable. Kudos to the chef and staff.
Thank you so much for such an enjoyable evening! We really enjoyed celebrating here tonight. I highly recommend for celebrating birthdays. Make sure to come early and stay late. The service is impeccable. The food is to die for. Be sure to order dessert! We recommend the chocolate one or the apple!
Have the lamb chop! This place was truly special from top to bottom.
All of the staff at 1789 made our anniversary celebration even more special. It was if they were cooking special plates just for the two of us. The food was absolutely amazing and they recommended wine pairings that really highlighted the food. The restaurant is completely decorated for the holidays. Everyone should put 1789 on their short list and go have dinner - for the food and the special experience.
Everything was perfect with one unusual item. We love the place but there was a really loud table next to us that ruined the atmosphere. It was difficult to have a conversation. I noticed other diners also were annoyed. I almost said something but figured the staff would ask them to be considerate. Unfortunately they did not. Oh well, it probably happens once for every thousand guest. So my odds of it happening again are pretty much zero. It’s a great place
This was probably the most phenomenal restaurant my girlfriend and I have ever been to. As our anniversary, we could could not have been more pleased with how welcoming the staff were, and our waitress so extraordinarily professional and friendly. Our food was outstanding, and I would recommend this place to anyone who will listen.
Tasting menu was great. They even worked with my dietary restriction.
Our guests from Lithuania were very imptessed.
My wife and I went to 1789 for a dinner to celebrate our anniversary. The staff were very accommodating of our dietary requirements i.e. no meat and alcohol. They verbally greeted us, gave us an anniversary greeting card, the menu and some truffles as complements. We highly recommend the restaurant.
The food was decent but overpriced. I think the price point is based more on reputation than the actual restaurant.
Outstanding in every respect, greeting upon arrival, server's attentiveness, exquisite foot, with such beautiful presentations of the plates, and such unique, special dessrt offerings! One of the finest restaurants in the USA!
Beautiful historic restaurant in the heart of Georgetown. The fireplace adds to the romantic ambience and the food is exquisite. The service is attentive but not overbearing. My guest was celebrating a birthday and the staff did a wonderful job of acknowledging the ocassion without drawing too much attention to our table. Worth the high prices for a special ocassion!
Fantastic food and outstanding customer service!!!! I can’t recommend any more! 5 star food!! Wow!
The restaurant overbooked for Thanksgiving and the service was atrocious. When you are spending over $100 per person you expect the service to be impeccable. It wasn't.
We arrived at 2:55 for 3:00 reservation and were ushered to the bar for a “brief” wait. Forty-five minutes went by and no one re-appeared to seat us. Had to return to front desk to insist on being seated, which we were.
Other than the arrival experience, ambiance and food were excellent
After 15 min wait our party of 4 was seated in windowless basement with bad artwork and Ed Sheeran playing! No ambiance at all and not what we had expected for a special occasion. We all had the Prix fixe thanksgiving menu. Food very poor except for dessert. Service very good. However, overall, very overrated and overpriced. We don’t recommend.
We came here for Thanksgiving dinner as the 1789 was a top rated restaurant in D.C. for Thanksgiving. We made the reservation in September. When we arrived the staff was stressed and they were clearly having a problem with turning the tables over. I understand that it was Thanksgiving, but as a restaurant that is so highly rated for Thanksgiving you would think they would have it done. After leaving us standing for about 30 minutes, without suggesting we go to the bar or taking our coats, they seated us in what must have been their special events room. It was cold, cafeteria like, drop down office building ceiling , a view of the exit sign and service bar, modern fake art and carpet. No cozy fire place, no old wood floor, no nothing. We heard others coming in and refusing to eat in the room. It was a terrible disappointment, but we did bit want to make a scene, so we sat and paid full price for the that dump. Again I understand it was Thanksgiving, and we made the best of it. But 1789 shame on you. You should have never done that. No class, not professional, no respect for the customer.
Expect far more than what we received and was extremely disapointed about where we had been originally seated. Embarrassing is all I can say as well as insulting.
You call and email to confirm our reservation several times before hand but you fell far short of what we expected and booked 2 months earlier foe special seating in the tavern room.
Anyway, it was a nice day just not nearly as special as we had hoped for.
Avoid the "bar/club" room. No atmosphere, quiet. Clank your silverware to the sound of soft 80s/90s ballads. They describe this room as "contemporary" but I would call it sterile, uninviting, and charmless. Sit in the "pub" instead if you're planning to come here at all.
Lovely way to have a hassle free Thanksgiving dinner with available family.
Our Thanksgiving meal was very tasty and the server was very friendly and attentive. The only negative was when I first entered the restaurant. I was told that the other person that I was joining for lunch had already arrived and had been seated. Instead of leading me to the table, I was left standing there while the people behind me were seated. I finally just filtered through the restaurant by myself until I found my friend. Further training is obviously needed in the front of the house!!
We were there celebrating my son's birthday. They actually presented him a menu that had "Happy Birthday" at the top. The service was impeccable and the food wonderful. The atmosphere was quiet and very comfortable. Would definitely go back again.
Excellent restaurant but terribly overpriced and under-plated.
I've been going there since the '60's and haven't been there for several years but won't bother going back.
My meal was very salty. Three of us were given an incorrect menu. Chose our item, just to be told it was the wrong menu.
Every thing was great including the food which was expected at the price point. The only negative experience we had was waiting in the dark cold drafty small waiting area for our table to be ready. Maybe a good idea to ask folks if they want to wait for their table at the bar. We would have said YES!
Celebrating a Marine finishing Officer training at Quantico.
Great food, great service and fabulous sidecars!
Anniversary dinner. Service was absolutely incredible. Comfort food. Very staple. Not flashy but good. What makes this restaurant is the table service. Front desk is marginal. Just ignore it. Servers really close the deal.
Wonderful dining experience.....can’t wait to return....
Wonderful culinary experience with a serene ambience. I will definitely be back. Service was top-notch and the special touches were excellent (custom printed menu and dessert touch). Thank you, 1789, for a night to remember! See you soon :)
Excellent in every respect
Excellent service and food. The variety of dishes and use of farm-to-table ingredients made for a memorable meal. The wait-staff were very attentive and helpful.
We enjoy the Club Room as a cheery and quiet place to get together with friends and family.
The food was wonderful and the service attentive.
We had planned a fun weekend and DC and out of the hundreds of restaurants to pick our best Saturday night meal, I picked 1789 - largely based on the reviews. I made the reservation through Open Table distinctly requesting a good table and arrived at the restaurant to find out we were going to be seated in the pub area. I tried to address this with the host, however it ended up that this was going to be the best we were going to get for the evening. I will say that the waiter was absolutely top-notch. His service was not only impeccable, but enjoyable. The food, although I would say very good - had mixed reviews at our table. Somethings were great - some not so great. For the price and the experience overall, I am afraid this place left me a tad disappointed. There we were all dressed up sitting in a bar. Ugh... I am not even sure I would return to be honest. I am quite fussy, so maybe the next guy will find everything exceptional. This was just not the place I thought it would be. Sorry.
The food and service were outstanding. We had a fantastic meal that lasted over two hours and never once felt rushed.
I have been to 1789 a number of times in the past for special occasions. This time like all others the service and the food was simply amazing. The Attention to detail and the thoughtfulness of the staff was what made it such a special anniversary for my wife and I.
For our 10th we took a cruise on Star Cruises (tall ship with only 200 passengers). This year I wanted to do something special that would make us both excited and give us time to talk about the year we'd shared. 1789 was the perfect restaurant to do this. The wait staff was attentive but not showing up every 10 seconds. They gave us time between courses and nothing felt rushed.
I highly recommend this place as one of those must go to, must return to places in Washington.
