The food was not that great for the price. Their apple dessert was a joke. Not that great. We won’t be going back. The staff was great though except for the manager, she was rude to one of her staff in front of us when he was just asking a question. He also acknowledged other people at other tables but not us.

Wonderful food and ambiance. Service was delightful. My wife told the waiter about her lactose intolerance, and the waiter looked out for her every step of the way.

A lovely special occasion--type dinner in an historic house in the Georgetown neighborhood. The service was attentive and appropriate and the food was interesting and outstanding. Definitely a special - event to be at this beautiful restaurant.

Despite the traditional decor and quiet ambiance, we felt very welcome by all attentive staff. Everyone remembered my friend's birthday and all the little details made her feel very special. We loved our server, who was happy to share history of the restaurant and brought the food to life with his descriptions.

We were honestly disappointed by the tasting menu. Yes, the menu was explicit and we knew what we were ordering, but for $95, we were hoping for something more exciting than a poached egg and brioche as a course. Considering the exchange rate, we would have had a better dining experience ordering a la carte (or somewhere else).

In the very least, we would have appreciated some background music. We felt very distracted by conversations at other tables.

Late seating for party of six (830pm) on a Friday worked well--dining room was not full and we had no issues with noise. However- they were out of the gnocchi...much to the dismay of our one diner who checked the menu daily hoping to see them still being offered.
Old school atmosphere, our men wore jackets and am sure the table's blatant tasting of each others apps and entrees raised an eyebrow or two among staff...but we tipped well, forgave their few service missteps and applaud a great meal.

The service and food quality were very good. The menu seemed somewhat unimaginative with the main courses. The salmon and halibut were cooked to the correct doneness, but the halibut lacked a little seasoning. We were fortunate to sit in the Middleburg room which had a good ambiance and we were able to have conversation without yelling. The cheese plate and recommended drink pairing pairing were the highlight of the food, a superb finish to the meal.

Very nice restaurant with great ambiance, however, the food was not at the same level. None of the five members of our party were impressed by their meals. Service was exceptional.

We have dined at 1789 before and each and every time it has been a wonderful experience. The duck is the chefs Specialty and oh my goodness I can certainly see why, it was absolutely delectable. My husband had the halibut and it was equally as outstanding and as we were asking the waiter to thank the chef for us he said that lamb is the house Specialty so we then wished we had tried that as well.

Very enjoyable meal with superb service. We don't live in the area, but wanted to experience something different from home. The restaurant was charming...... we really enjoyed the Tuna Tartare and the Halibut.

A traditional formal restaurant where multiple United States Presidents have dined.

I was disappointed in the variety on the menu and the quality of the food. We were staying in downtown Washington DC and took Uber to Georgetown to 1789 on a friend's recommendation. I enjoyed all the downtown DC restaurants much more. It was not worth the trip.

I would recommend this restaurant for the quiet and elegant ambiance and the excellent service. However, I would not give it a very high rating for the food.
The portions are minimal and although the main dish was well prepared, it was served lukewarm. The desert was also disappointing .

The atmosphere was nice...small dining room with antiques. Cute little bar. The absolute worst and most expensive food. Don't mind paying the price if the food is good. Where they dug this chef up, I can't imagine! Very strange combinations of food. We ordered a bottle of Tattinger Champagne and had to ask every time to have our glasses filled. A scoop of tasteless sorbet the size of a golf ball was $17! The portions were all extremely small, but that was ok since not one of our meals was fit to eat. It was also very cold in the restaurant and had to keep asking to have the heat turned up.

The meal consisted of small portions for a high price. The venison was not well prepared. The lamb chops were two and small. We will not be returning.

It had been awhile since we had dined at 1789. The last time was probably a decade ago and it was not at all up to its' previous standards. I'm happy to say they are better than ever now! Food was outstanding, service impeccable and atmosphere romantic and relaxing. Pretty close to perfect!

This place is really nice. It’s set in 1789 (ambiance), but the cuisine is modern and delicious. There seems to be a mix of American (classic/contemporary) and French and some hints of beyond (middle/Far East). The service is great, and the tasting menu is fantastic.

Found the experience to be not what we were expecting.. The burrata and gemelli appetizers were ok but our main courses were very disappointing, both in size and taste. I ordered the “rack of lamb” medium-rare. When it arrived it was a single piece of a lamb “rack” prepared seared on the outside with an utterly raw inside. My husband had the “strip steak” which arrived as two paltry “strips” of meat. My daughters had the salmon which was, to continue the trend, ridiculously small and also contained several intimidatingly large bones. Service was very attentive and nice, basic flavor was ok but portions and representation of what the dishes were to be like were abysmal. We ended up getting dinner afterwards which isn’t what you expect to have to do when you spend $400+ for dinner for 3 people.

Disappointing, The prices demand a superior experience and ours was not. More than 10 years since we had been there and it’s trended towards the pretentious. The food is of high quality but you must want a gourmet experience. Waiter was stuffy and unresponsive to comments. I finished the evening wishing we had gone somewhere else.

We had the chef's choice menu. We thought it would be a good way to taste the creativity of the chef. We were not disappointed. The duck was excellent! The wine pairings for each course complemented each dish perfectly. The meal is not cheap however you're going to enjoy the creativity of this kitchen.
