Went in for restaurant week for dinner. I had the wagyu tartar, the brioche crusted halibut, and ended with the dark chocolate Gateau. Was very satisfied with the entire meal. Loved this place and would recommend

We were so delighted to see 1789 participating in Restaurant Week and even more excited when we were able to get a reservation for dinner. When we want to dine, we do not mind driving from Baltimore to 1789. Even though the dress code has been relaxed, we still dress to enjoy this elegant restaurant. It had been several years since our last visit, mostly due to Covid restrictions. Another pleasant surprise was the addition of the first floor restrooms. Because of that, we were able to invite another couple to join us for dinner. She is recovering from a broken leg and could not possibly do stairs.
We actually arrived early for our reservation. We were warmly greeted and, as stated on their website, we were requested to show IDs and our vaccination cards. We were seated at a table near the fireplace as we requested in the John Carroll Room. Ruta, our server, was right there to welcome us and effortlessly attended to our every need. The service at 1789 is always exemplary. The gentlemen started off with cocktails and the ladies enjoyed Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines. We must compliment the chef on the extensive menu that we were presented with for Restaurant Week. Two of us started with the Crispy Lobster coated in Panko breadcrumbs with a papaya and napa cabbage with a Thai basil sauce. It was very tasty, but a little too spicy for us. My husband had the American Wagyu Tartare with shallots, cornichon, parmesan, pomme Rosti and black garlic. Our friend (who is not a lover of soup) decided on the Butternut Squash soup with coconut panna cotta, cranberry jam, apples and toasted pumpkin seed. She was thrilled with her choice.
We enjoyed the following entrees: Brioche-Crusted Halibut with roasted fingerling potatoes, fennel, grilled leeks in a Saffron-mussel broth, two Roasted Racks of Lamb with Israeli couscous, Cippolini onions, eggplant puree with Chermoula; and the Duo of Beef which was a grilled NY strip and a Braised Short Rib with sweet potato pu
Thanks to Ruta our amazing host for this evening. The whole team was great, friendly and very welcoming. First time visitors at their restaurant and we will be there again. Super service, very good food right on point cooked. Thank you very much :)

Always meets high standard set my first time dining here. Food and service was spot on. Everything was delicious but the creamed spinach was a unexpected surprise.
The entire experience was outstanding. Favorites were 1) butternut squash soup and also 1) the chocolate dessert. We also had the lobster appetizer, the sea bass and rack of lamb, along with several glasses of wine, all delicious. Lovely server, Ruta. Restaurant week was a very enjoyable experience at 1789.
Really beautiful little place with a great atmosphere. All of the food was great and the process were not outrageous. The drinks were great as well. Will definitely be back.

A tremendous restaurant! It blends perfect service with delicious food and a lovely setting. The photos online do not do the beautiful Christmas decorations justice. I look forward to returning!
I’ll start off by saying that I’m from New Orleans, and not to toot our own horn but IMO we have some of the best food in the world. I’ve also traveled to many places and countries and eaten a lot of good meals.
This meal was in the top 2 best meals I’ve ever had. The quality and preparation of ingredients, the combination of interesting and trustworthy flavors. The sea bass had a briny salty flavor which somehow hilighted the nostalgic nautical flavor of fish meals from my childhood while being deliciously fresh. The veal tagliatelle’s sauce had a flavor profile so complex and scrumptious I could’ve easily devoted the whole thing but had to share with my husband. The service was impeccable. Total hospitality, attentiveness, and charm that made us tourists feel like royal locals.
And honestly, worth the price. 2 dined on a multi-course meal and had 3 alcoholic drinks for $170 which for such a fine experience was truly not that bad.

Excellent time at 1789! Terrance was great and you would not have known it was his first day at the restaurant. He know the menu front to back. Try the rack of venison.

We have been blessed to eat in many fine restaurants over 34 years of marriage, but 1789 Restaurant is in the very top experiences… wonderful in every respect of casual elegance and absolutely terrific food and service. GO GO GO!!!

Great ambiance, service and food with creative cuisine
Risotto in squid ink was too sour and underdone. Risotto is the bane of many a qualified kitchen. Service was superb and cocktails worldly.
What a premier restaurant! 1789 is the perfect 5-star destination to celebrate, in this case, my Husband's 65th birthday. Not only were we shown to an exclusive table but also presented with a menu that had Happy Birthday written on it! The food was exquisite, rack of lamb for him and duck breast for me. The service was impeccable. And the Christmas decorations added another touch of beauty to the marvelous dining area. I love 1789. Then we walked through the hallway to Fitzgeralds for a nightcap. It was the perfect ending to a remarkable evening.
One like we never experienced before. Food, cocktails, service, just name it and they mastered.
Traveling from CA and visited a restaurant I had last eaten at over 50 years ago when I was a child - i was not disappointed

The service was excellent. When my husband got up to go to the men’s room the hostess came over to refold his napkin and place it on the table neatly folded. Classy. The music was just the right level. Didn’t have to scream across the table. I had the duck. Delicious. My husband had the sea bass also excellent. The restaurant was intimate and decorated for Christmas. Reasonable price for dinner at a upscale restaurant. Will definitely go back when we return again to DC.
