We have enjoyed our dinners at 1789 for the last 20 years, the food is amazing every time we eat there. Thank you taking such good care of us!
Love this place! Amazing food and service in a quaint Georgetown atmosphere.
This is an old style house, actually several houses that have been connected. They were built in the Federal style in the mid 1800s. There are several types of rooms that you can go to but the more traditional one is the green room with a fireplace. It has much more charm and a romantic atmosphere. There is no question that the atmosphere here is lovely and it is a romantic place to have dinner.
The service was top of the line and they had taken note that this was an anniversary. Our menu was personalized and said happy anniversary at the top of it. Also when our dessert came, it came marked with chocolate that said happy anniversary. Everything about the service was excellent.
The rack of lamb gets the most votes from everyone and I would agree. I asked for it to be rare and even though the waiter looked at me a bit askance because he wasn't sure I really meant it, it came exactly as I wanted. It was delicious. It is also 2 very large sections of lamb on the ribs. The duck also was excellent, cooked just to perfection, and the yellow fin tuna tartare was also excellent. I was a bit disappointed in the fig salad because there was so much endive in it and only a little piece of goat cheese. But the goat cheese and the figs together were just outstanding. I didn't hear anything about the foie gras but the lobster bisque was very rich, creamy and absolutely delicious. As a dessert the hazelnut torte cake was a bit unusual. It was basically a hard pancake on top over a round slab of chocolate with hazelnut cream on top of it and four meringue type chocolate pastries on top. It was very good but it was unusual.
Key now is that on Tuesday night there is no corkage fee so you can bring your own wine. however there is a very extensive wine list.
Outstanding! Fabulous service and the food was delectable. The atmosphere was wonderful!
The whole experience from being met by Greg to your receptionist ordering a taxi everything was perfect.
Service was great!
Food was prepared well! Very tasty and satisfying. Enough options for every pallet.
Thank you for making a special night special!
We ate dinner here for my husbands birthday and it was the perfect way to celebrate! Our waiter made sure we were well taken care of the whole evening. The meal was perfectly paced-never did we feel rushed or like we were left waiting. The ambiance was romantic and perfect for date night. The food...oh my goodness. The food was so good. Everything we ate was perfect that evening and we felt our meal was worth every single penny. I would recommend this to anyone seeking a quiet, romantic evening in the city.
For years, I've heard about this restaurant but to be honest, it was completely overrated. We ordered the duo of berkshire pork and the tea smoked duck breast as main courses... both of which were highly recommended from the waitor but neither was that great or even memorable. It was pretty clear, yet no one took notice, that the duck meal was barely touched/eaten by my significant other. However, the lamb and gnocchi was quite good and the organic tequilla old fashion and 1789 sidecar cocktails were excellent. The chocolate hazelnut desert wasn't anything to rave about either... it was difficult to break apart and the puff pastry tasted old/bland. I really dislike writing negative reviews but I really did expect substantially more from such a well known establishment.
Greatly enjoyed the experience and plan to return. Christian was outstanding is helping us enjoy the experience with his suggestions and service.
One of our favorite dining experiences while visiting DC. Everything about 1789 was sheer perfection. Will definitely eat there again next time in DC
Love the atmosphere of 1789 restaurant. Met beforehand in the new bar lounge area, would love to eat there next time. Lovely ambience - very elegant but comfortable.
Phenomenal service and food.

Chose 1789 for our anniversary dinner and weren't disappointed! The staff and servers were friendly and made us feel special! Food was amazing, fresh, and unexpected flavors for all food and drinks.
Wonderful restaurant. Enjoyed my lamb chops and Caesar salad very much, My husband also enjoyed his halibut and lamb gnocchi appetizer. Great service and a very cozy restaurant in a Georgetown town house with tons of history. Would definitely go back when we visit the D.C. area.
We had such high hopes and wonderful memories of 1789...but we left very disappointed. The dinner was $300 for two, which is fine...when everything is good. This was not good...food nor service.
Second time visiting was just as memorable as the first. They really go above and beyond - more than any other place I've dined. When it comes to special occasions, this is it for me.
Our dinner was fabulous. The food was excellent. The decor in the John Carroll room is beautiful and is perfectly complimented by the beautiful porcelain.
My husband said this recent dinner at 1789 made for the best meal he’s ever eaten in his entire life. (He had the duo pork) It was his birthday celebration, and after a year of eight surgeries, it meant a lot to us that 1789 made it this special for him.
This was our second visit. Both times I have been extremely impressed by the historic beauty of the place and the refined dining experience. I love the foie gras. What a treat! I had seafood stew and (of course) it was wonderful.
The bill is always high there, but it is such an elegant experience that, to me, it is worth it.
Thank you, 1789, for a lovely evening. We will both remember it fondly.
My wife and I were celebrating her retirement, so it was a special dinner. We were seated near the entrance to the dining room on the first floor right in the center of traffic. While it didn't detract too much from our overall enjoyment of the evening, I realized I should have asked for a table away from traffic when I made the reservation! Regardless, we love 1789 and will be back.
Everything about our experience was well-executed and done in an impressive but unpretentious way. The Colorado lamb was delicious as was the seafood cassoulet from the prix fixe menu. The heirloom tomato salad was also very good. The wine pairings we got were very nice. Our waiter asked for basic guidance and each glass he brought was a great match to our food. We really liked our waiter who has been working there for many years. Recommended when you are good with spending a pretty penny for an excellent experience from top to bottom. Our 3 course prix fix with wine pairing, and 3 course a la carte with salad, entree and dessert both, with wine parings, and a an additional glass of Bailey’s came to $250 inclusive of tax and generous tip for excellent service.
The staff cares for you like you are their children. I can not say enough about how awesome they were. Recommendations were immaculate and delicious. Can’t wait to come back
Everything was fine except for my main, the most expense item on the menu. For $59, I expected perfection with my medium rare lamb chops. Any chef would have seen these were tough, and the silver skin hadn't been removed. The garnish vegetables that accompanied it were overcooked mush. The peach salad was a creative starter, and the chocolate hazelnut st honore were lovely. My three guests all seemed happy with their choices.
1789 is a fine dining experience like none other!
For celebrating both our anniversary and our daughter’s completion of a masters degree, 1789 was the ideal restaurant. And they were so kind in adding special touches in honor of our celebrations!
1789 continues to distinguish itself with its most welcoming staff, professional and discreet service and a classic interior replete with antiques and historic art. The menu features farm-fresh, seasonal and imaginative dishes: excellent seafood, meats and vegetarian delights. And don’t miss the marvelous desserts! We were delighted with the great selections of wines from around the world and the US. A first-rate dining experience! We will love to return!
I ate in the bar and it was lovely. The service and food are consistently good at 1789, and the bar offered the entire 1789 menu.
Classic elegance plus superb service plus a brilliant cuisine plus special wines equals a perfect dining out experience!
The food was amazing!
Wonderful food and great service. Cool ambiance.
Very poor, indifferent, inattentive, perfunctory service. Restaurant had very few diners and no upstairs party yet we were left with no way to order a bottle of wine for cocktails. Waiter ignored request to see full wine list when we arrived and did not want one of listed wines by the glass. Brought a beer we had not ordered. We paid for it anyway. Main course took more than 1/2 hour after we had finished first course. Waiter talked down to us when I politely asked about very obvious delay, saying condescendingly that fine dining ( we are therefore unfamiliar with concept??) required time. Really offensive. Won’t recommend or return. Too bad since I live in G’town and dine out at far better places. Quality of Food saves this restaurant. Snooty and overrated otherwise. Lacks hospitality which is what discriminating guests are in search of.
Great service and great food. Went for the summer menu special with wine pairing (great wine choices). Thank you so much for having these events, made it possible for me to come visit. Hope you do this again, definitely looking forward to my next time.
A Georgetown staple that lives up to its reputation. The food was wonderful and our server, Victoria, was professional without being stuffy. If you can visit during Restaurant Week or during their special Summer Menu offering, it’s a great value.
Wonderful service, including everyone wishing us happy anniversary individually when they came to the table. Outstanding food, too.
An old-school, elegant place with highly polished, professional service. My starter was an heirloom tomato salad - the tomatoes were unfortunately not the best. Entree was the seafood "stew" and was perfectly fresh and outstanding in every way. Dessert was equally delicious - kouign amann with blackberry sauce, served with a very nice sherry recommended by the staff. The ambience is a bit old fashioned but still comfortable, the big band era soundtrack quite enjoyable.
The bartender didn’t converse with us while we were waiting for our table. I initiated a conversation 3 times. Another couple came in and the bartender offered them a specialty drink menu and started to tell them about the recommended entrees. When we sat down at our table I asked the waiter if he could take our picture when he had time since it was our 49th anniversary. I had to ask him 2 more times. Meanwhile another party of 5 that sat down after we were seated were served first, the waiter offered to take a picture of their group, and they finished before we did. The food was very rich- my vegan selection was squash blossom and it came deep fried which I wasn’t expecting. My husband had the fillet and fingerling potatoes- it was great, tender and cooked to perfection.
First time customer! The atmosphere at 1789 is unique and very welcoming, however varied dependent on the area you are seated. Ask for an area dependent on the occasion if celebrating one. Overall the food and pricing is high end, so don't expect a moderate expense. The cuisine is well prepared and as you would expect portions are small but well presented. The service by our waiter Greg was exceptional! Courteous, personal and engaging. This was a private family birthday dinner for my wife and all in all very enjoyable.
The restaurant was very accommodating!! Even with my last minute add on!!
We took my mom for a special dinner and had very high expectations. However, it was extremely disappointing for all the reasons already identified by other reviews. Food was not seasoned properly, flavors were bland and uninteresting, strange mixes that seemed to include lima beans in everything and dishes that were used made it difficult to eat. For example, the seafood cassoulet was served in a small shallow little bowl that made it impossible to cut anything without having part of the dish spill over. Strange. Highlights were the crab bisque, chocolate dessert, wine pairings and the service but it is not worth the high cost and much better food is available in the numerous other Georgetown restaurants.
I strongly recommend this restaurant to friends. Services was awesome. And I had a dinner at the table previous President had before. So it was very wonderful.
