The server, Randall, was great and very welcoming. It was all reasonably priced. We'll be back again!

Food was great. Flavorful and fresh. Enjoyed dessert as well. Skip the lobster, was chewy, but excellent service, they took it off the bill. Best cappicino I've ever had and that means better than a little cafe in Paris or Italy. Nice mood, old school DC clientele but staff was not stuffy or rude. Nothing like a fancy place with a Sense of humor! We enjoyed the menu, the mix of small plates, cheese, and large portions. For the price you get a great amount of food.

somewhat absent minded service

The chef has changed since the last time we went a couple years ago. The menu is very akward to read and understand what course is what and took way too many explanations. I would think it was me but, every table had the same problem. However, i love the various food options. My husband and I ended sharing our foods they were so delicious and we could not decide. The prices of course are overly large for small portions but, the food is fantastic and you know going here that it is a place where you get the succulent food for the price you pay making it all worth the price. We purchased an entire bottle of wine and the waitor was kind to let us order what we knew was what we liked versus pushing any particular bottle they may have overstocked

Hadn't been in years, but took an international group there few nights ago. Was better than ever and food was so impressive guests from France want to come back. Decor, history, attentive staff and great food make this a great night out!

The food was excellent. Potato soup with potato dumplings and sturgeon caviar; cheese selections; rack of lamb -- all wonderful. Service was friendly but scarce. very scarce. Average wait between courses was 25-30 minutes.

I had not visited 1789 for several years, and was pleasantly surprised by the overall standard, which has risen. I liked the idea of a small menu, with the dishes cooked individually and to perfection. The wine list is top-class if on the expensive side. And the service is discrete but attentive. Overall, an excellent experience for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner with my wife!

We had not been to 1789 for years and remembered it as somewhat dark with heavy food on the menu and fancy sauces. We were so pleasantly surprised with the lighting and the menu. The food was very interesting with organic and local food sources. The flavors were very well put together and the presentation enjoyable. Also, the portions were very appropriate and the prices surprisingly and pleasantly moderate. We will definitely return.

We made reservations, and had a very short wait to be seated (under 5 minutes). The food was exceptional, as was the wine. The service was great. There were only two things I would improve on; the first is the wait time to get our food, which took a little longer than expected; and the second was being seated next to a large table of rather noisy individuals - we were there for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner and it was quite noisy -the large tables should be in a separate area.

Indulgent yet inventive food and truly professional wait staff. We loved that you could order several small plates to essentially create your own tasting menu. I particularly enjoyed my deconstructed lasagna and even though I'm usually not much of a dessert person, the gingerbread ice cream and brown butter hazelnut cake were outstanding. I felt lavishly treated by the generous amount of beluga caviar on my potato soup and the size of the seared foie gras on my quail. My husband's lamb dish was superb. Overall, I was surprised by how good the food was. I expected it to be stodgy or stuffy, but it wasn't. My only complaint is that the atmosphere of the room we were in wasn't as great as the food, but looks like other rooms are better.

For starters, the tables were on top of one another. I brought my girlfriend there for a romantic dinner and it seemed we were at a table of four because another couple was a foot away from us. In addition to this, we were in a small room that had a bar right behind us. There were groups of people immediately behind us chatting it up. The atmosphere was not romantic or quaint - it was quite the opposite actually. Before going, I heard the service was great and that the staff were very knowledgeable. Our waiter was very nice but wasn’t very knowledge about wine and did not articulate the menu options very well. As for the food, I ordered the veal cutlet and I was not impressed at all. This is not to say it was bad, but it was not what I expe

Went to 1789 on Valentines day weekend and the tasting they had was delicious. The food was delicious, the wine pairing was excellecent, and the service was expectional. I dont know what I can say that other reviews havent said, but I will say this. I went with my girlfriend of 2 years, and this is the only time I can recall that she ate red meat and pork. This is now one of her favorite restaurants. To go from not eating red meat and pork to loving a place where that was what she ordered, should tell you just how good this place is.

Great ambiance and old time Washington class. My biggest complaint is that the portion size is tiny. Seriously, plan on ordering a couple of entrees or eating beforehand, because the 4 oz. $38 beef tenderloin will leave you hungry.

Reviewed this restaurant before and nothing has changed. Wonderful food and service in a restaurant where you can carry on a converstion without shouting. Dressy, alsmost every guy is in coat and tie, and the ladies are dressed. Bar is on the quiet side during Jan. and February when Sheik is on vacation. Prices are very nominal for a restaurant like this. If it's a special occasion tell them in advance and they will print a menu to celebrate the occasion.

Have been going to the"89" for many years and have celebrated many events including birthdays, anniversaries, graduations etc. The chefs have included Dupont,Lacoste,Beauchamp and now Giusti.Things have gone downhill a bit since Ris Lacoste was in charge of the kitchen. The last visit was for my wife's birthday and her comment was"If this was my 1st visit to this restaurant,I wouldn't hurry back". Our waiter was outstanding and has been there for many years. It is still quiet and nicely decorated. With so many new, great restaurants in town, the 1789 has dropped from the top of our list. That's sort of sad.

The service was Great -Randall was outstanding!!
Also, the food was very good but we both were VERY disappointed that there is NO chocolate dessert. There are so many chocolate lovers in the world - there really should be at least one chocolate/chocolate dessert. We were disappointed with the dessert we ate.
Thanks!

As a native Washingtonian for over 60 years, it is nice to see that 1789 remains an inviting and gracious Georgetown destination. When too many resturants assault too many senses, 1789 is not only a terrific resturant but a safe haven from such assaults. The menu is contemporary yet appropriate for the setting.

The 1789 has earned a name in DC but it is over rated. The table are too close. You are almost on top of the table next to you. You can not carry on a conversation. The bar is very small and crowed, the exit door is blocked by people at the bar.
