1789 Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Drove down from NYC and thought since it was our anniversary, we went to 1789 for a special dining experience and the didn’t disappoint.
The room was beautiful and there was a roaring fire which provided an amazing ambiance.
The food was deliciously prepared and made with some very innovative ingredients. Sea Scallops with Sweetbreads and a for Instance.
We thoroughly enjoyed every bite.

We were in DC for my 54th birthday and college visit. Made reservations for 1789 based on online reviews. Great food and service. Our niece was with us and has a food allergy. Our waiter asked about food allergies after taking our orders and was able to have her selection modified in order to accommodate her needs. The wine and cocktail selection is superb and the hostess was helpful in securing a cab for us at the end of dinner. We would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the DC area.
1789 used to be all about solid, traditional fare. Since its expansion into the building next door, it's gotten more creative and adventurous. That's generally a good thing, but sometimes simple is better. Regardless, a fantastic meal with fantastic service.
Amazing service. Went for New Years Eve - very nice restaurant. We ate on the new side which is very nice but the old side has all the history. Our server Michael was amazing. We went over to the old side to sit at the small bar and the bartender Bob was also amazing, he even explained the history of the bar to us. Very special place.
Lovely spot - inviting, sophisticated, very professional while remaining warm and friendly. Several winter dishes that have stood the test of time and were carefully prepared. Broad wine list that was thoughtfully assembled as well. Definitely on the return list.
1789 did not disappoint. The server was quite knowledgeable about the menu offerings, the atmosphere was peaceful, and the food was wonderful. The wine list was extensive with choices ranging in price from accessible to quite expensive. I would definitely recommend for a special occasion, unless you are wealthy and can dine like this all the time!
The perfect spot for a romantic dinner! The staff went above and beyond to make our anniversary dinner special. We sat at the bar beforehand and had great conversation with the bartender named Shawn. He shook our hands and addressed us by name! The food was exquisite and the ambiance was romantic. Great choice!
We celebrated a birthday at 1789 on our visit to Washington DC 12/21/17...They couldn't have been more welcoming on our special occasion. The service was exemplary and the meal extraordinary. We would without hesitation recommend 1789 and would go again in a heartbeat...Thanks so much all at 1789 for making our day so special (especially Felix )...
We were seated in the new bar section of the restaurant. It has an uninspired plain decor. We were seated next to the kitchen door, which provided a constant distraction throughout our time/evening. While our server was most pleasant and gracious, given the ambiance, the distraction of the kitchen door, and the pricing, I would not recommend this restaurant. In truth, our dining experience was a great disappointment. This is the first time I have ever offered a negative review.
1789 has undergone a significant facelift with a completely redone interior. Can't say I'm a fan of the new look. It's modern and bland. I miss the colonial character and charm of the former decor. That being said, the food is still wonderful and worth going for. I enjoyed a wonderful venison tartare and a delicious cod with bacon lardons. So at least the quality of the meal hasn't changed!
