I always considered 1789 to be the quintessential, old school Georgetown establishment. I booked it to treat one of my oldest friends, visiting from the West Coast. We were seated near the fireplace, as I requested, and the evening began just as expected. The holiday ambience was lovely. The cocktails were perfect, and the little jewel salad was sublime. We asked for one of the least expensive bottles of wine, and it was wonderful. After our waiter opened our wine, things went downhill. The fire alarm went off, and for the next 40 minutes we had to endure the ear splitting alarm and flashing red lights. Fire trucks arrived outside (we finally had to go out the front door to get relief for a few minutes), but we were assured there was no fire. We returned inside to our table, with the expectation that the alarm would be turned off, but it just continued, making any conversation impossible. To my amazement, as most of the other patrons were hurriedly bundling up and leaving with the alarm still blaring, our waiter served our entrees with a smile, as if nothing was wrong. The rack of lamb and the short ribs were delicious, but frankly we could hardly enjoy the dinner. The alarm finally stopped, but then it started again after a few seconds. Twice more it stopped and started again. We ate as quickly as we could. Our waiter finally did apologize, took the wine off the check, and we were each given $20 gift certificates. When the alarm finally stopped for good, we were about the only diners left. We reopened our wine that had been sealed for us to take home, but our ears were ringing and dessert just did not appeal at that point.

Amazing Experience, we have been meaning to go for years and finally went. The service was stellar, the wine director/somms pairings were outstanding, and every dish was amazing. I have to esp call out the service. Unfortunately, an alarm went off (it was clear there was no fire and there was a malfunction) which put a blip in the night but the staff deserves an award. When the alarm finally stopped, I joked that I needed a whiskey to calm my nerves and the waiter overheard and immediately offered a whisky (which I did not take him up no since I was driving). While other people were screaming about discounts we just sat and waited. The staff made sure we had one of each dessert to go and discounted our meal. The staff was so friendly and accommodating and carried on like troopers both with our meal and the angry guests. I would have given this place 5 stars without the alarm bc the food and pairing were fantastic and we had great service before the incident. To be honest, its the best kind of test to give a restaurant a good rating bc if they can keep up the food and service though that, then you know they are good.

A wonderful evening with a long-time friend. Conversation at normal levels with attentive but not hovering service and food at the expected high quality level. Came away happy, relaxed and satisfied, not stuffed.

We have previously enjoyed the ambiance and food. However, my "rack of lamb" was one large chop which was 50% fat. I was credited for the $40 plus cost but it was a poor dining experience. The "GemSalad" was fair. The glass of Shiraz was very good.

The meal was exceptional from beginning to end.

The salmon and venison were great as were the vegetables served with them.

Our server, Hannah, was extremely helpful without being intrusive.

I decided to treat my wife for her birthday to dinner at 1789. The restaurant, when I reserved a table, asked if dinner was to celebrate a special occasion. As son as we announced ourselves to the host, me wife was greeted with a sincere happy birthday wish. Our waiter echoed the happy birthday wishes of others. Our meals met our every expectation for this exceptional restaurant. And, the warmth of the welcome we received even as we retrieved our coats. The cost check staff knew and bid us farewell with yet another wish for a lovely birthday. Great.

It has been well over 30 years since I have been back to 1789. This is a Washington institution. Expensive but what isn't nowadays. The ambience is excellent. I like the old / colonial feel of the place. Service was excellent. It was my wife's birthday and they gave her a card and chocolates. Now, lets talk food. My wife had snapper which she liked. It was cooked perfectly. No complaints there. I had the rack of lamb. I love lamb. But I did not love what I was served. It was devoid of taste (it needed some sort of coating/salt on it). It was clumsy piece of meat. A bit too much fat. Didn't cut well. If this was Hell's Kitchen, Chef Ramsey would have tossed it into the trash and closed down the kitchen. All that aside, I would consider going back and ordering something else.

With a group of ten, we were well-served with a very attentive waiter. The food was delicious, including the duck, venison, foie gras, and amuse bouche. We had a great time and delicious dinners.

Two days before I made the reservation for our 15th anniversary dinner, I called and spoke to the manager. I told him that my husband was a pescatarian, and asked if he could suggest a seafood dish in advance that could most easily be altered to my husband’s preferences. He assured me that any of the seafood dishes could be tweaked.
We arrived early and were seated in the bar area, which was charming and comfortable. The servers seemed accommodating and attentive. My husband ordered, stipulating that no meat be used in preparation. We were served, and the food was delicious and warm. I helped myself to a taste of my husband’s meal, and realized immediately that it was cooked with bacon. I jumped up and ran to the wait station to let them know, and they quickly removed the plate. The manager came over, all apologies, and informed us that the same dish - with bacon - had been prepared for another patron, and that the plates had been mixed up. Soon the corrected dish was brought to my husband, and we began to eat again. I could tell by his face that the problem had not been remedied, but we ate in silence and left shortly after. We were not charged for my husband’s meal...but the evening was not the celebration it should have been.

I was there with my fiance to celebrate our engagement. The service and the food were both amazing. The place is quiet and elegant, perfect for a date. We let them know about the occasion in advance and they brought us a customized menu. We had a great time.

Food was good, not great (it's Clyde's, after all). Was seated at a strange table (front dining room, to the immediate left of entrance), 'caddy-corner' to an adjacent table to my back - prompting 90 minutes of bumping elbows with the adjacent guest. Uncomfortable.

I must say everything was GREAT! I did not expect great food and great service on Thanksgiving. I was happily surprised to receive both. From the moment we arrived everything far exceeded expectations. Our table was ready(I expected to have to wait on Thanksgiving). There service was FIVE STAR all the way. The Chef and his team did an amazing job on everything. One of the Best meals I have had. Thank you for leaving your families to make our thanksgiving perfect.

My family celebrated its Thanksgiving dinner at 1789 this year. I usually cook at our home in NC but this year b/c of work schedules, etc, my husband and I drove to DC where our adult children live. Members of my family arrived at different times. I was very grateful for the staff: they never rushed us, met our individual needs beautifully, and addressed the one child very appropriately. I would definitely return to dine there when in the City. Food was nicely presented, tasty; good wine selection; desserts--excellent!

Very cool restaurant right across the street from the Exorcist house and stairs, and part of Georgetown University. For what you pay, the food could have been better - I ordered the lamb which is their house specialty and for good reason, but still overpriced in my opinion. My wife got the halibut which was tasteless unless you pile the other things on the plate onto the same bite. Hazelnut tart for desert was plain and boring. Our waiter was informed and nice, but very distant and impersonal. Would go again if for a group’s request, but certainly not on my own accord.

Not the 1789 I have known and love, limited if excellent menu. They have raised prices in a meaningful way over the past yer or two. Still have the great rack of lamb, still have great fish, I would have given the food five stars except they killed their traditional apple desserts and the one I ordered was way to new wave for me. C'mon folks, gotta have a great and traditional apple of something other on the menu. All of us thought our entrees and appetizers excellent. One positive surprise - an affordable wine list, by the glass or the bottle. I would go back in a heartbeat - actually I am booked with none other people for December 22nd, the twentieth year we have done a pre-Christmas dinner at 1789. So, you have a few weeks to get a real apple dessert onto the menu! If you go, get there early they have the coziest, most welcoming bar in the city.

The food was not that great for the price. Their apple dessert was a joke. Not that great. We won’t be going back. The staff was great though except for the manager, she was rude to one of her staff in front of us when he was just asking a question. He also acknowledged other people at other tables but not us.

Despite the traditional decor and quiet ambiance, we felt very welcome by all attentive staff. Everyone remembered my friend's birthday and all the little details made her feel very special. We loved our server, who was happy to share history of the restaurant and brought the food to life with his descriptions.

We were honestly disappointed by the tasting menu. Yes, the menu was explicit and we knew what we were ordering, but for $95, we were hoping for something more exciting than a poached egg and brioche as a course. Considering the exchange rate, we would have had a better dining experience ordering a la carte (or somewhere else).

In the very least, we would have appreciated some background music. We felt very distracted by conversations at other tables.

Late seating for party of six (830pm) on a Friday worked well--dining room was not full and we had no issues with noise. However- they were out of the gnocchi...much to the dismay of our one diner who checked the menu daily hoping to see them still being offered.
Old school atmosphere, our men wore jackets and am sure the table's blatant tasting of each others apps and entrees raised an eyebrow or two among staff...but we tipped well, forgave their few service missteps and applaud a great meal.

The service and food quality were very good. The menu seemed somewhat unimaginative with the main courses. The salmon and halibut were cooked to the correct doneness, but the halibut lacked a little seasoning. We were fortunate to sit in the Middleburg room which had a good ambiance and we were able to have conversation without yelling. The cheese plate and recommended drink pairing pairing were the highlight of the food, a superb finish to the meal.

We have dined at 1789 before and each and every time it has been a wonderful experience. The duck is the chefs Specialty and oh my goodness I can certainly see why, it was absolutely delectable. My husband had the halibut and it was equally as outstanding and as we were asking the waiter to thank the chef for us he said that lamb is the house Specialty so we then wished we had tried that as well.
