   This is our family’s favorite restaurant for special occasions It is on the expensive side, but well worth it for a special occasion Atmosphere is historic, quaint with fireplace in main dining room. The smaller room by the bar very intimate also Food perfect - pick chops, lamp, fish awesome Appetizers- octopus, beef tartar, etc all perfecto Service excellent We love 1789!!

   All the dishes we had were delicious and beautifully presented. The servers were very professional, friendly, and there when you needed them. We'll be going back to 1789 soon!

   Great service. Entrees do not have sides so dinner will be pricey. This restaurant is for the elite, so don’t be surprised if you spend over $200 on a dinner for 2!

    Very very expensive, but decent food (plates were $40-50 per plate). Our server was spectacular. Be advised, in small print on the bottom of the menu they are charging a surcharge to compensate for inflation and cost of food these days. I shared feedback that this should be made more visible to customers (larger font, similar to how other restaurants notify their customers of corkage fees or sharing plate fees). I had no problem paying for it, but did not agree with how they chose to be transparent with the customer. It felt like they were trying to hide it. They reluctantly removed the fee of which I simply gave to the waiter who was spectacular.

    We temporarily relocated to DC five months ago and of the many restaurants where we've eaten, this is in the top ones. The old-school charm and service were impeccable. The bar is top notch and we chatted with the bartender about the underlying basis for the drinks, candid reviews by the bartender of some of them, and suggestions to tweak the drinks to our liking. The food was exceptional -- American cuisine at its finest.

    We went here for our Anniversary and had a wonderful time! Everything was excellent. We stopped at Fitzgerald’s before dinner for cocktails and they were superb. All the staff were great!

    We were gathering for dinner prior to a show at The Kennedy Center. We had to leave right at 7 and had no time for dessert. However the pastry chef sent out some lovely treats.

    My partner and I went to 1789 for our anniversary and wholeheartedly enjoyed it. The food was wonderful and the service was as well. The staff congratulated us on our anniversary and provided a small complimentary dessert and menus that said “Happy Anniversary” at the top. I will definitely consider coming back to 1789 next year!

    Everything about the evening was perfect. The service was impeccable and the food did not disappoint. The Spanish octopus, which we shared, was a memorable combination which included perfectly prepared potatoes and very tasty chorizo. Equally memorable were the main dishes - poached lobster and duck breast. A verdicchio wine from what is a very well curated wine list rounded the meal. The ambiance was formal but also relaxed. We will be back.

    One of my favorite places around DC for a nice and/or celebratory dinner. Very classy but unpretentious with a great farm-to-table menu. Excellent wine list and some delicious cocktails. Staff are very helpful and attentive.

    Food and service was excellent. All the waiters were patient and helpful in assisting our every needs, especially since was for an anniversary . Food portions were equivalent to french cuisine. Only issue was when order the black truffle coated halibut, they did not mention that an extra $30 was tacked to original price. Never was mentioned in the menu or the item's description. A bit misleading, otherwise would have given a better score.

    Such a lovely evening celebrating my husband’s birthday. The ambiance was delightful, many of our choices were delicious and the service was fantastic! We were seated upstairs and everyone made sure it was a special experience!

    We have been here multiple times and this last visit was very off. It could be that they seated us in the pub area which was not lit well and cold. They did give us a candle on the table when we asked but the pub area is not as elegant as the main dining room. The menu and food was as delicious as ever except for the oysters which were not shucked well and the presentation which was always special was off. The sauce was very light and the granita not as flavorful. The lobster, duck, and lamb were excellent. The apple dessert while beautifully presented the fruit accompaniment was very gel like instead of fresh fruit tasting. We had to ask that the first course be cleared and in a restaurant of this caliber that should not be an issue. We had no alcohol with dinner and felt we received different service because we had not ordered an expensive bottle of wine. All in all it was an off night but the food is still excellent.
