We brought our 9 year old on a family trip to DC and our waiter was fun and accommodating, bringing him a chocolate milk in a cocktail shaker (shaken at the table of course) and explaining the very artistic banana pudding dessert to him in detail. We loved it. Food wine and cocktails were of course excellent.
The ambiance, food, and service never disappoint at this iconic, high-end Georgetown restaurant. Dinner at the 1789 is always a special occasion, even on an ordinary week-night.
As a long-time patrons (more than 40 years), we have seen the menu gradually change from reasonably-sized portions of traditional cuisine to tiny portions of nouvelle cuisine that emphasize the chef's showmanship over satisfying the diner's appetite. The ingredients are superb, the presentation is arresting, but the quantity of food served in a three-course dinner is very small. This tendency to serve beautiful but tiny portions is revealed in the extreme in the dessert menu, where an item like citrus cheesecake turns out to be two bites of a cheesecake sponge with several artfully arranged berries and a few drips of sauce.
A wonderful experience, with a large price tag (more than $100 per person), but you are likely to go home hungry.
My husband and I had a wedding anniversary dinner at 1789. We appreciated the smaller dining room setting and fresh flowers at each table and the dining room sideboard. We had the chef’s tasting menu with the wine pairings. The food was delicious, looked and smelled wonderful and we liked the wine. Duck was quite likely the best we ever had! The port we were offered for dessert WAS the best we ever had.
We were there on a weeknight and the crowd was not too formal, and we enjoyed that as well. The staff were very accommodating and courteous.
We will definitely be back for another special occasion dinner.
1789 is a natural for business/interview dinners; have done so multiple times in the past. Impresses candidates and current staff alike. Service is impeccable, food is terrific; access with valet parking is very easy. Working with the 1789 staff from the business office to the valet parking team to the waitstaff = everything works smoothly and professionally.
You can always count on great food, well presented, and professional, courteous service at 1789. This is one of my favorites in Washington!
Celebrated my wife's 50th birthday here. Asked for a quiet table and they delivered a lovely corner table overlooking the main dining hall which was intimate and perfect for quiet conversation. The service was very attentive, polite and classy from start to finish and we never felt hurried. Our waitress was superb. We opted for the tasting menu and paired drinks which we thoroughly enjoyed. The ambiance exudes history and character. Had a lovely evening and highly recommend.
1789 is a great place for a business meal because it is elegant and quiet. I try to go every time I am in DC. I take employees there as a thank you treat. Server this time seemed a little new and inexperienced. Made things a little uncomfortable hanging around and listening to conversation. I asked my colleague as a joke if he thought rack of pork was just a fancy name for ribs. She felt the need to say in a huff that they weren’t ribs...well of course not. I let it go but I wasn’t asking or even talking to her, I was making a joke. Made comments on our conversation throughout the meal. It was just overall uncomfortable especially because the conversation had sensitive topics. Never had this issue before- Just needs some training I think.
My innovative foie gras 'torchon' rolled in a nutty crunch was wonderful. Also recommend the pork chop which was tender and tasty. While the decor of Punch prints and sort of a British look is not my thing, still the room has a warm feeling and the decibel level of this smallish room is wonderful.
We took a friend for a landmark birthday celebration. The setting is lovely, in classic period Georgetown furnishings. The service was attentive, professional and knowledgeable. Each item on the menu that we ordered was delicious, from duck to beef to vegetarian entrees. And the desserts were to die for. All plated in a very artistic and appealing manner.
Simply outstanding! Loved the bar and bartender Bob. Good and service were great. Only issue was a couple that brought young children and were laying them down on the bench seats to sleep right next to us.
We like this restaurant. This time we were somewhat disappointed by changes in the menu - for example, Australian instead of Colorado lamb, and a narrower wine list for some favorite European varietals. We really want this place to maintain high culinary standards as well as a highly enjoyable ambiance.
The 1789 Restaurant is perfect for couples or small business gatherings. They offer complimentary valet parking (which is a must in Georgetown), great service, outstanding dishes and helpful staff. I would highly recommend 1789 the next time you are in Georgetown!
On a friend's recommendation, we chose 1789 for our anniversary dinner. It was more than just dinner; it was a delightful experience. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive. He was nearby if we needed something, but never made us feel rushed. His cheese plate and appetizer recommendations were on target and delicious. He paced our dinner on a relaxed and enjoyable timeline.
We had the beef tenderloin and the cod with leeks and truffles. The truffle flavor wasn't as pronounced as I would like, but both entree's were excellent.
We enjoyed the comfortable ambiance of feeling like we were being served in someone's home. The lighting is dimmed, but still enough to read the menu and easily see your dinner companions. The fireplace was lighted and provided for a warm and elegant atmosphere.
The icing on the cake is free valet parking! We enjoyed this experience immensely and will definitely return.
Just absolutely enjoyed our experience celebrating a birthday! Don, our waiter, could NOT have been more professional.
We will be returning again!
Definitely not an everyday venue, but a great place to celebrate a special event.
Excellent meal, nice wine, very good, attentive service, charming setting. Complimentary valet parking is a pleasant perk, too.
1789 exceeded our expectations. The food was delicious and the service was on-point. It was a very nice experience that made our special night out extra special.
Once again, 1789 met our high expectations for the overall experience. There is enough that "stays the same" at 1789 to make it feel like a lifelong friend. Yet Chef's commitment to refreshing the menu provides more than enough sense of adventure. We found the hospitality to be 100% up to the usual 1789 standards, which equate to perfection. The new "Sidecar" bar area is worth a visit either prior to one's reservation, or as a stand-alone visit. A perfect evening!
The best dining experience I have had in years!
The food and service were exceptional, and the atmosphere was lovely.
The food was okay but the place was dark and very noisy. There was a disconnect between the food and the atmosphere. More traditional fare would have been better. The bucatini was disappointing; it looked good but the taste was unremarkable. The portions for the entree and desserts were small (see Venison picture and Desserts) and focused more on presentation than on substance. They now have a new Chef so maybe she is still testing her wings.
1789 has become one of my favorite fine dining spots in DC. Besides being one of the more reasonably priced restaurants in this category the service is always attentive without being intrusive. And the food... it is always scrumptious and "special." The chef's take on dishes is creative and well prepared. There is even a new bar next door for that after dinner cocktail.
Special dinner with my wife. Fantastic dining experience!
Loved our server! Dinner and cocktails were perfect.
I have been going to 1789 over the years since I was a student at Georgetown. Today, it retains its authentic early American charm and ambiance, but adds an interesting, updated menu. I found offerings for a variety of tastes. The service is warm and attentive. A cozy, intimate setting with perfectly prepared and beautifully presented food. A terrific choice for special occasions, or just to reconnect with friends. You won't be disappointed!
It was a wonderful restaurant for special day . Food and service are wonderful.
We hadn't been to 1789 in many years, but is still one of the classiest places in town. The complimentary valet makes the drive into Georgetown easy. We were seated in the new addition, which isn't as cosy as the old rooms with fireplaces but was nicely decorated and full of noise-absorbing fabrics so conversation was easy. We really enjoyed it.
We all had the tasting menu and each of the five courses was memorable: oysters, scallops, foie gras, wagyu beef, chocolate--all interestingly done. As good a meal as we had there in the old days of Ris Lacoste.
An excellent (but expensive) meal. The service was outstanding, each entrée and appetizer (and dessert) was perfect. We were in the front room, and the little café-style chairs were very uncomfortable if you ever wanted to lean back -- it felt like you were reclining on a bamboo rack.
We will be back!
My girlfriends came to visit me from Miami for a girls weekend. We enjoyed our meal, ambiance and wine .. our waitress was amazing! Highly recommend.
The service and foie gras was good, everything else was mediocre. Also don’t get the beet Wellington it was literally a big piece of boiled beet wrapped in a soggy pastry shell. If you are hoping for awesome flavors, beautiful plating, and a unique dining experience this place will disappoint.
Classic Georgetown restaurant with great food
Amazing, I went with my boyfriend for our 1-year anniversary and the food was great, service was great, and they even gave us a personalized menu, a card, and a take-home dessert gift to celebrate our anniversary.
It’s nice experience. Good service and food in general. The tasting menu is great, totally worths it . We had the oyster, foie gras, scallop, and duck. The oyster was little bit not as well as I expected. But all the others were perfect.
We went here for Valentine's day because we were looking for a cozy romantic dinner. We were pretty disappointed when we were seated in the new addition to the restaurant, which is much more modern and cool feeling than expected. It was nicely decorated, but it was not the vibe at all that we were going for, considering the other side to the restaurant. The food was good, not fantastic. The best part was dessert--the black sesame coconut was delicious and interesting. Definitely worth ordering.
I reserved 1789 but was seated next door in a sports bar with paintings of football players on the wall - not very romantic!
We love 1789 and we decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a very special dinner. We tried the seven course tasting menu and it was the best meal we have ever had. Each course contained superior ingredients and new flavors. The presentation was amazing as well. As always the service was attentive, warm and welcoming. Congratulations to 1789’s new chef.
Food, service and environment is always amazing every time we go!
This was our Valentines Day celebration. We had dined here many years ago in our youth. The meal was delicious, and service was superb. It was perfect. We will definitely return.
I was told that “all wine bottles would be 50% off, however, I was informed just as they were opening a bottle of Opus One that all wines over $250 would be full price. I was extremely disappointed with this, but the food was delicious.
