The food and service was great. The decor was nice as well. They gave me a few free tastings as well. Great experience. Recommended for couples due to the romantic atmosphere.

This restaurant is simply marvelous from the warm greeting to the unexpected truffles with the bill. I could not recommend it more highly. The decor is a fascinating blend of historical and print items, the dood delicious and our waiter Greg was literally perfect.
This is my new go to for DC.

I have never had a worse experience. They delayed serving our entrees by close to 50 minutes. I asked and inquired multiple times about the status of our order. They claimed the kitchen was busy yet the restaurant was half filled. We ultimately had to walk out to find food elsewhere. Even worse they weren’t even apologetic. They were sassy and rude.

If you are going to charge all that money for a meal it should be served in a timely manner. The arrogance rudeness and poor service is beyond unacceptable. Our waitress disappeared and she never even touched base with us.

I have dined at multiple restaurants internationally and locally. I have never seen anything like this. An outrageous dining catastrophe.

Wonderful server! Gave recommendations of where to go after dinner and shared the history of the house. The chefs special was delicious. This was a happy accident that my boyfriend and I stumbled upon. Cocktails to die for!

We arrived early at the restaurant and the valet was not yet set up. I came into the bar and the bar manager came outside - offered to park our car and showed us a couple of spaces we could just pull into. He asked my name and I told him my first name. (My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary). He immediately said ‘Welcome Christine! And Happy Anniversary’. We ate in the bar area. It was a truly wonderful night. The service could not have been better, the restaurant manager stopped by, the food was outstanding. It was lovely! We even got a menu with ‘Happy Anniversary’ and a card. HIGHLY recommend it!

Fantastic Old Fashioned made with Makers Mark and a nice slight spice kick. The Oregon Pinot Noir was spot on and the Tuna was really super-fresh and really good (seared and sliced)and the Cesar salad was really good. The banana chocolate desert was a nice finish.

The food and service at 1789 are outstanding. We had an heirloom tomato salad, the softshell crab main, and the fish "stew". The ingredients were top quality and dishes were perfectly cooked and beautiful to look at. The service was warm and professional and the room was quiet enough to have a conversation without raising your voice. My only criticisms are that upon entering the restaurant there was an unpleasant dank odor and that the decor could use an update. The odor wasn't present in the dining room so it didn't interfere with the meal. Time to replace the carpeting, which I suspect is the source of the odor, and to update wall decor.

I’ve created a pros and cons list for my experience.

Pros: The atmosphere was wonderful and the food was amazing. Possibly the best fine dining meal (food-wise) I have had in DC which is saying a lot considering the over saturation of upscale dining in this area. The sommelier was also a joy to work with, he took his time and not only chose a great bottle but also enjoyed wine conversation with us for a few minutes which was lovely.

Cons: The service. When you plan on fine dining and spending $400+ on a meal for two you expect flawless service. We did not receive that at 1789. The moment we arrived the hostesses seemed to be confused about where to sit us despite it being slow at the time of our arrival. Once we were sat we were greeted by a nice girl who got us our pre-dinner cocktails, however once we asked for the wine list a gentlemen took over as our server and this is where the service declined. We ordered our food and he immediately tried to up-sell us by saying “most couples add salad” My instant thought was “I just ordered multiple cocktails, a $125 bottle of wine, two entrees, and two sides and you’re really trying to upsell my food order?”. Then despite having a gluten allergy specifically listed in my opentable reservation we were brought amuse-bouche with gluten in it. The server apologized and brought back a gluten-free version. Then the server returned to inform us that an item we had ordered included gluten (clearly meaning he had not read the reservation notes) and we had to modify the order. Then dessert. My fiancée ordered 3 scoops of ice cream in 3 flavors, after taking the order the server stepped away for a moment and returned and said he had forgotten what she ordered, she repeated her order and he said “ok”. If that wasn’t enough, he then returned with 2 scoops of ice cream! When she asked for her third he said “You said two scoops”! Unbelievable!

Probably won’t be back without contact from management.

I heartily recommend this restaurant to anyone planning an anniversary dinner or other special occasion. We had such a dinner the other night, and 1789 couldn't have been a better choice. We both had the five-course tasting menu, and every dish was excellent (I even believe the scallop dish may have edged out the much-anticipated duck breast as my favorite dish of the evening). I particularly note the quality and professionalism of the front-of-house staff. I've been to plenty of nice restaurants were the FOH staff doesn't match the quality of the kitchen, but that is not the case here. From the receptionists, to the bartender, to the two gentlemen directly serving our table, all ensured a flawless evening. Courses were perfectly timed, and my water and wine seemed to refill themselves whenever I wasn't looking (I always consider it a high mark of professionalism to be so attentive without being intrusive. They know their tables). I also appreciated the card and menu they gave us to commemorate our evening, and the 'Happy Anniversary' the kitchen added to our desert dishes, written in chocolate. Is this place a bit more expensive? Yes, but it's worth it - they'll ensure a quality evening.

Good valet service, had reservation and seated with no waiting. Good, heavy pour cocktails. We had 3 apps and 4 entrees, all excellent. Lamb, duck and salmon were big hits. Pricier now than in decades past but still one of our faves.

We went to 1789 to celebrate our engagement (happened before arriving), which was excellent. The service was great and the food was exquisite. We ordered the fixed menu with wine pairings, which gave us multiple courses to enjoy the night. They surprised us with complimentary champagne and took our picture
to commemorate the toast. It actually brings up my only complaint for the night. We ordered cocktails to start the meal and they brought us the cocktails, and champagne, and wine for our first course all at the same time. We didn't have a chance to enjoy the champagne or the cocktails before the first course showed up. The food arrived before we had finished the wine for almost every course, so we felt a little rushed with the drinks. (We drink a fair amount of wine, so this was surprising...) Other than that though, the service was excellent in every other way. They were there without being "there." The food was absolutely excellent!! The tuna tartare and scallops were both amazing.
