The tables in the main dining room are too close together.
The experience of the restaurant was grand and the courtesy and kindness of the staff topped the food.
My husband is handicapped and everyone went out of their way to make his evening incredible! Bravo!
Good, but not great, which was disappointing given the great location and its history. The decor was stupendous, but the menu needs to escape the past and continue to lighten up. There were a couple issues of execution (medium came out as medium rare, couple of service misses), which one wouldn’t expect given the reputation. The wine list is an opportunity waiting to happen and needs attention/breadth. Nice for taking your student out for a nice meal away from the dining hall, but a short hop to Dupont makes a world of difference in dining.
Awesome Food. Great wine and cocktails. Cant wait to come back soon!!
We were delighted by the food and service at 1789. We hadn't been there for a while, and the food has been variable, with different chefs over the years. But Tracy O'Grady is terrific, we were really impressed with the quality and inventiveness of the food. The service as well was perfect - we actually had waiters who waited until all of us were finished eating a course before removing the dishes, a real rarity these days. Also had an outstanding cocktail. It has always been a quiet and lovely place to have a fine meal, and i'm happy to say the 1789 is holding up very well.
Perfect in every way
The food, service and staff were all wonderful. I had the tenderloin and it was one of the best I have had.
My husband had the lamb chops and he enjoyed them as well. I would definitely go again.
The food was excellent.
The service was great.
I haven’t been here for 30 years and amazingly, 1789 is still the greatest restaurant in Washington DC.
We were seated in the bar and club room. It was a strange experience. I had to ask to be seated after waiting at the bar for 15 minutes despite there being plenty of tables available. Didn't receive a wine list at our table. I just asked for a chardonnay and have no idea what it was. Food was very good. Then during our meal they sprayed cleaner on the table next to us to wipe down for the next guest. Never had that happen at a fine dining experience. Would not recommend. Maybe the regular restaurant that wasn't available would be better??? All in all very disappointed.
We love this restaurant - our second time here. The food is creative and beautifully prepared; the staff is well-trained and friendly, and the ambiance is quintessentially Georgetown. You cannot go wrong here.
1789 is a restaurant where if you are ( and here’s a cliche that I dislike but will use) a foodie will make your experience more than worthwhile. The ambience is homey with just the right lighting. The service is both friendly and knowledgeable. Their sommelier was quite helpful. But, you’re coming for the food. Their chef makes scallops, beef tenderloins and other dishes to a higher level than previously encountered. All in all, what a lovely experience.
Very relaxing. Front dining room is spectacular. Able to converse easily. Wonderful food quality. Delightful service.
here on vacation
The experience was absolutely wonderful from the beginning. From the valet, to the coat check to the wait staff. They treated us like absolute royalty! They had a nice touch to the menu for our birthday which made it extra special and felt like the waiters were watching constantly to make sure everything was perfect. We will absolutely be making this our “go - to” for reasons to celebrate! Thank you so much for a tremendous experience !!!
We were pleasantly surprised. Food was amazing. Staff was friendly. Wish I had worn a jacket.
The ambiance was great, we were accommodated on our request to dine in the main room. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals except for my salmon which was a bit salty. However, I have to say that my overall experience was absolutely delightful.
Cant go wrong here. So good and a classic restaurant with lots of history. Try to have a drink at the bar with Bob before your dinner. Duck breast was perfect and lamb chops.
Our party of 10 arrived a little early, but caused no problem.
The service was great! The food was delicious!
Highly recommend 1789!
Upon arrival the gentleman tending bar gave us a brief and very interesting history of both the restaurant and the area and set the stage for a great experience. It was our anniversary and they seated us in a nice corner and really treated us special with the simple things like “happy anniversary “ written on the desert plates with candles. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. I rarely order tuna but I’m so glad I did and the salmon my wife ordered was excellent. I will certainly be back!
Excellent food and service! A must if you are in the DC area!
First time visit to the lovely 1789 restaurant...just an evening filled with ambiance and professional staff that tend to your every need. The food was delightful. Will visit again when returning to Washington DC...a real treat.
I am a lifelong Washingtonian and I say this dining experience was close to perfection. Best in Washington. The food, the service, the wine --everything. We will definitely return.
We had traveled down to DC to celebrate a milestone birthday. The more we read about 1789, the more wonderful it sounded - and IT WAS. The atmosphere is so special and they gave us a perfect table. That experience was matched with amazing food served by the most lovely and thoughtful staff. I honestly can't imagine a better evening or recommend this place highly enough.
Our party of three enjoyed the five course tasting with wine pairings. The amuse Bouche was delicious with a nice taste of horseradish. We very much enjoyed the crab appetizer and I thought the swordfish was especially tender and well prepared.
We had a lovely evening in an attractive setting. .
Great meal, wonderful service. We chose the paired meal and tastings. One of the best meals ever!!!
Great place, we’ll be back!
Beautiful atmosphere! Loved it!
My wife and I have been coming to 1789 for 25 years. My wife even worked there as a coat-check 35 years ago. Monday night was our first and only disappointing visit in all this time. Service was slow and idiosyncratic, my rack of lamb was undercooked and disappointing, and the others in my party said their meal was average. I've always expected more from 1789.
Fantastic Steak and Service
Wonderful place in awesome part of DC. highly recommended.
We came here for our anniversary and apparently we were not the only ones! There were at least two other anniversaries right next to us. Waiter was great the food was amazing and the bill was hefty. Order the duck! You will not be sorry :)
GREAT. Will go back soon
My wife and I went here for our wedding anniversay dinner and we had an amazing time. It was nice and quiet, even though there were parties with kids, because they have separate rooms for groups with kids. They have a popular seafood based tasting menu, but the wife are not seafood people. So instead we able to out together a custom tasting menu from the items on the rest of the menu and it was all fabulous. It was great to be able to split all the dishes together. We finished with the baked Alaska, and it was also delicious.
To top it all off, they gave us special anniversary menu and little gift on the way out. One the best, if not the best experience we have ever had for dinner.
Classic gtown restaurant that's not at all touristy. Great service. Good food. Decent, strong, cocktails are served.
Food was excellent and the service was even better.
I really enjoyed my meal. The hostess was extremely kind. Overall I enjoyed my experience.
Superb, as always. A wonderful and elegant treat in Georgetown!
I never write reviews but this experience.... Very disappointed!! We were here for my Mom’s Birthday celebration and told them ahead of time that we wanted to be seated in the main dining area with the fireplace but they still sat us in the bar area. Food came- we had ordered the Rack of lamb done medium, however they cooked it very rare- there was blood in our plate!! When I asked the waiter, he said that the chef recommended it be cooked rare- so they made it that way without telling or asking us if it was ok! The Yellowfin Tuna was ok but tasted fishy.... best dish was perhaps the seared scallops app and the bread basket, sorry to say. Huge disappointment for the ecxtravagant cost. We were so looking for this to be a extra special but left feeling let down.
