Wonderful service, including everyone wishing us happy anniversary individually when they came to the table. Outstanding food, too.
The bartender didn’t converse with us while we were waiting for our table. I initiated a conversation 3 times. Another couple came in and the bartender offered them a specialty drink menu and started to tell them about the recommended entrees. When we sat down at our table I asked the waiter if he could take our picture when he had time since it was our 49th anniversary. I had to ask him 2 more times. Meanwhile another party of 5 that sat down after we were seated were served first, the waiter offered to take a picture of their group, and they finished before we did. The food was very rich- my vegan selection was squash blossom and it came deep fried which I wasn’t expecting. My husband had the fillet and fingerling potatoes- it was great, tender and cooked to perfection.
First time customer! The atmosphere at 1789 is unique and very welcoming, however varied dependent on the area you are seated. Ask for an area dependent on the occasion if celebrating one. Overall the food and pricing is high end, so don't expect a moderate expense. The cuisine is well prepared and as you would expect portions are small but well presented. The service by our waiter Greg was exceptional! Courteous, personal and engaging. This was a private family birthday dinner for my wife and all in all very enjoyable.
The restaurant was very accommodating!! Even with my last minute add on!!
We took my mom for a special dinner and had very high expectations. However, it was extremely disappointing for all the reasons already identified by other reviews. Food was not seasoned properly, flavors were bland and uninteresting, strange mixes that seemed to include lima beans in everything and dishes that were used made it difficult to eat. For example, the seafood cassoulet was served in a small shallow little bowl that made it impossible to cut anything without having part of the dish spill over. Strange. Highlights were the crab bisque, chocolate dessert, wine pairings and the service but it is not worth the high cost and much better food is available in the numerous other Georgetown restaurants.
I strongly recommend this restaurant to friends. Services was awesome. And I had a dinner at the table previous President had before. So it was very wonderful.
Everything other than food was great. Food was at most mediocre
Value was high because it was restaurant week. A good menu was offered. While the crab bisque and chocolate desert were very good, the ballotine of chicken shouldn't have escaped the kitchen. The leg piece was fine, because it was intact. But the main part, the breast, was like three disk of kitchen sponge, mushy and creepy in texture (sous vide?) and tasteless. It's hard to image how a chef could prepare and serve such a weak main course.
Good food, reasonably priced wine (at least some good bottles the somilier recommended were in the $50 range). Went for restaurant week and some portions were a bit small, but overall great food and experience.
Food is great. Free valet parking service!
My husband and I went for restaurant week. The staff was amazing. Truly amazing. I would recommend this place any time you want to have a wonderful dinner.
We left after being more or less ignored for about 45 minutes. The wait staff seemed to specialize in gaze avoidance. We were seated at a rather poor table in the "Club Room" despite the room being half empty, had to find a waiter to order a drink, never recieved any bread etc., and were actually not asked by anyone why we actually had decided to just leave. Pompous and pretensious. Food looked good at other tables but we never got to taste any. More than disappointed that we chose to spend our "special event " here. This is the first "review" I have ever submitted.
While we found the food to be very very good, we found the atmosphere upstairs to be a little stuffy for our taste. The tables have odd dimensions that make you feel like you are sitting very fair away from someone, which may not have been an issue if this wasn't supposed to be a date for me and my girlfriend. However, we acknowledge this may be a matter of personal taste.
What wasn't a matter of personal taste was the service. The couple seated next to us received their appetizer at the exact same time we did. They then proceeded to receive their entrees AND their desserts before we received anything else. This was frustrating to watch, and actually delayed our plans for the rest of the night. For this reason, we aren't exactly super eager to come back. The flavors were all very nice though.
Nice interior setting. The menu for restaurant is not the top of the dish on regular menu.
A lovely venue with great and attentive service. However, I was disappointed with the dinner entrees offered during restaurant week.
First-class food and service! Our party of long-standing friendships couldn’t have gone to a better restaurant to enjoy our evening.
Generally the food was okay. The appetrizer was very upscale and tasty. Parts of the main dish were much too salty. The dessert was excellent. Unfortunately I had siginificant gastrointestinal problems the night and next day after the meal. While it is possible that it was unrelated to the food I am a bit suspicious.
The service was very friendly and attentative but there was too long a wait between courses.
We would prefer that items offered for Restaurant Week be from the main menu rather than a special Restaurant Week menu.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience, mainly because our server, Gregory, was excellent. He was attentive without hovering over us. The food was great, in terms of quality and freshness of ingredients. Preparation is not the most inventive but I will take traditional preparation for overall good result over some inedible modern twist dishes. I gave only four stars for food because all my dishes were a bit too salty. (And I tend to add salt to everything.) Otherwise, all was lovely. Highly recommended. Glad to have found this gem in DC.
The restaurant has really cool period decor; it even has a gaslamp chandelier. The service was excellent. I split a large bottle of cider with a friend and the waiter kept it on ice and refilled our glasses. We went for restaurant week so it was a good deal. My only complaint was that the chef had a heavy hand with the salt.
The food was delicious, creative, and well-represented. The server and service were attentive but not intrusive. The restaurant even uses different glassware to signal the wait staff whether each diner is drinking still or sparkling water so they don't need to ask. The pace of each course was comfortable, but not rushed. When asked, the server gave helpful comments on various dishes, which helped us make great choices. I was very pleased with the halibut, scallop and shrimp "stew", which is not really a stew but but seafood perched on a moist bed of delicate vegetables and my companion was delighted by the moistness of a well-done pork duo. The sound level was wonderfully low. Great evening!
Best Restaurant in Georgetown!!
Service is quite good, but food is under my expectation.
I had a seafood dish, which contains an item (tastes like squid meatball) that is way too salty.
The chicken dish is not made of whole chicken breast, but in a innovative way of grounded chicken meat that is reshaped into chicken thigh. However, it lost the texture of chicken meat, which is kinda weird. I liked it, but another person doesn't.
The dessert is of good quality, but too sweet for both of my party. We didn't finish our dessert.
Overall, I still think this is a good restaurant, just not as good as what I heard.
1789 was fantastic!! We had a wonderful time that was filled with delightful service and exceptional food. I highly recommend 1789 for any occasion.
We celebrated our anniversary at 1789 and it was so perfect! Everybody and everything for our dinner was memorable and special - thanks so much!
Rob is a friendly bartender
The "pri fixe" style summer menu with wine pairing was an excellent value at $69/pp---the appetizers were good along with most of the entrees (chicken was meh) though desserts I was a bit disappointed.
The service was excellent, professional and attentive; only thing that was odd was they asked about a special occasion, which it was, along with the recipient and spelling of their name, which I gave them. However there was no cake/cookie or anything else offered all evening.
Thought it was a bit odd....perhaps a communication breakdown somewhere down the line?
We will be back!
Delicious summer seasonal menu and great service
No only good but excellent.
Very kind services of the whole staff.
We enjoyed our evening a lot
Everything was amazing, food, service, ambiance. We were celebrating my wife's birthday, and from arriving, the hostess greeted us and wished a happy birthday to her, so did the waitress, and her menu had a Happy Birthday sign. When leaving, she received a HB card and a copy of the menu, together with a nice small pastry.
As always 1789 outdoes it self in every way! Great food, great atmosphere, great ambience, great staff!
Good but not great. Certainly not a good value. There are better options.
We celebrated my husband’s birthday there last night, and as usual, the food was outstanding. The ambiance was lovely - quiet and relaxed. Although the food is a bit pricey they offer a nice selection of unusual combinations. My husband’s rack of lamb disappeared before I finished half of my lobster! And my favorite morsel was the hot peach with goat cheese. If we had had room for dessert we might have asked for another one of the chef’s amuse-bouche of shrimp ceviche- yum.
Half of our party got sick from the food there. The waiter was nice, but also a bit of a novice. He poured wine into my water glass that was filled with water.
My husband and I celebrated his birthday there. We were late, but we called to let them know and the host was understanding, friendly, and accommodating - on the phone and upon our arrival. At the table, they provided my husband with a menu that said, "Happy Birthday" at the top; they wrote "Happy Birthday" in chocolate sauce on his dessert plate; and they provided him with a birthday card and a souvenir menu. It was a lovely and elegant touch. The server was very pleasant, timely, and not overbearing. She also worked with the kitchen to accommodate a special substitution request. The food was delicious and worked well with the suggested wine pairings. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we will return.
1789 is not a new experience for us; have visited many times but especially for our wedding anniversary.
Everything is done exceptionally well, and the extra touches are terrific. And the food it terrific, too.
Fantastic staff and food. It was my wife’s birthday and they took such great care of us and accolades us in every way including her major food allergies. Complimentary valet parking as well. Definitely would recommend to everyone wanting a nice meal.
One of the best places anywhere. Great food! Loved the seafood bisque and all the food! The ambiance is wonderful. All the staff are awesome! Drinks great! Dessert terrific! On the expensive side but so worth it!!!
