It was a cosy, nice restaurant to have dinner. Very attentive staff!
Definitely recommend to everyone who can afford it.
I had not recently been to 1789 but it didn't disappoint. Always have liked the laid back and cozy atmosphere of this restaurant and fortunately the food and service was more than up to par. Would definitely recommend it.
I had not been to this Georgetown institution for years but decided to try it over the Thanksgiving Weekend. It turned into an exceptional experience. While the meal was most impressive, our service was beyond reproach. Our server, Jacqueline (sp?) made a great evening even more special with her recommendations and attentiveness. The Manager was gracious enough to take us on a tour of the 1789 which has undergone extensive renovation since my last visit. A beautiful establishment with tremendous history. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation.
Bob was great!!
We visited for Thanksgiving the food was amazing. The staff was great as always.
Always nice being back
This was our first Thanksgiving Day at 1789 tho we’ve enjoyed it on other occasions. They seemed overwhelmed by the holiday. Can’t say I would do again on a high volume day.
Warm and cozy atmosphere.
We had a traditional, Thanksgiving dinner. The pumpkin bisque was creamy with plenty of bits of lobster. The turkey was moist and delicious.
The apple streusel dessert was the perfect ending to a truly yummy and satisfying meal.
Sadly, our sever was sub par. He wasn’t personable, and we heard other servers nearby recommending things that our server never mentioned, things that weren’t on the special Thanksgiving menu offered that day.
Our dessert arrived and he was no where to be seen, never asked if we wanted coffee or tea, which we did.
This restaurant is a must while visiting DC. Go check this one out.
Although the presentation and quality of dishes were superb. There was a sense of old money elitism in the air. The staff turned their noses up to my GF and I numerous times and made us feel unwelcome, Likely because I was not wearing a suit and tie. We still managed to spend $300 on a dinner that was less then enjoyable at times. Plenty of other fine dining establishments to have a culinary experience. Will not recommend or return.
This was, I believe, my third time to 1789. The service was a bit stuffy, but good and timely. The experience was not as good as prior visits. Of the five people at the table, the food likely averaged a 7 out of 10. I had the lamb which was absolutely fabulous. Perhaps the best I have ever had. The duck and fish were a bit underwhelming, although I must note that by the time I sampled the duck, it was cold....not the restaurant's fault...I didn't try my daughter's duck until just before the table was cleared, and I know that duck is much tastier warm, than cold, in my opinion. While the service was good, a certain warmth was missing, and certainly made the very expensive meal less of a memorable event. I will return and hope that the next experience is a better one.
We have a birthday dinner every year somewhere special for 4 of 6 of us with Birthdays in October/November and this year we had a wonderful time at 1789.
We opted for the tasting menu which was excellent and I left the restaurant feeling reasonably full, not over the top sick full - which I usually do when we have a "fancy" dinner.
The courses included tuna, halibut, scallop and duck. The duck was absolutely amazing - and I don't even like duck. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the dessert which was supposed to be some sort of PB&J ice cream sundae but it didn't taste anything like PB&J - kind of flavorless.
The servers were absolutely lovely. Told us stories of who had eaten at the restaurant - Obama, Clinton, etc.
They also have a warm and cozy bar where I look forward to stopping by when I am not there for a 5-course tasting menu.
Chose to be in the main restaurant on the Open Table site but was placed in the bar. This happens about 20% of the time I go there.
I had a bad childhood experience with swordfish and decided to challenge myself by having the swordfish at 1789. The swordfish here might be the best meal I have ever had. I wanted to savor every bite and it was the best decision I could have made. Thanks 1789 for a memorable night!
Perfect place for a business dinner or drinks
Excellent service. We celebrated our anniversary, the staff did everything to make our evening special. We are happy we chose 1789.
We were seated next to a very large and loud table away on the second floor. The food was average at best, and not at all as good as it used to be.
The service was excellent. Our waiter was outstanding. I look forward to eating at 1789 very soon.
Great as usual
Too slow between courses. Otherwise great service
This is a great restaurant to celebrate any occasion or just to treat yourself to a nice dinner with great service.
Wonderful Washingtonian restaurant. Our server was professional and marveled us with his recounting if the history of the restaurant.
icon was an amazing server great food, great servive great food cozy atmosphere
My wife and I returned to DC and 1789 for the first time in 20 years. We chose 1789 to celebrate our 20th anniversary and it did not disappoint. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation and were directed to the bar to wait until our table was ready. That was a good move. The young man who was the bartender was very friendly and made some awesome drinks.
After being seated at our table on time, we were served some warm bread and butter. We both had fish (halibut and the seafood soup). It was all excellent!
For dessert, we shared some ice cream that was served on a frozen plate with “Happy Anniversary” written on the side in chocolate. It was a great restaurant for a special occasion. Would have no reservations at all about eating here again. The atmosphere is intimate and historic.
For kicks, walk across the street and see the staircase from The Exorcist. It’s still creepy even after 40 years. :)
FIve tasting menu を頼んだが料理の量は予想より多くなく日本人でも大丈夫。
I arrived early than the reserved time but I spent excellent time at bar till my companions came.
The tasting menu was so excellent and that the volume was not too much even for Japanese.
I requested bottles of wine and good for 4 people.1
1789 restaurant is one of the best place to go.
Food is very good but we got placed upstairs in a rather stark room which lacks the character and ambience downstairs which is very nice. Also our food took 20-30 mins to appear which was not really what you expect for the quality of the restaurant . Our server apologized twice. The dress code seems to have been relaxed as well with all sorts of outfits now acceptable ..
Excellent food, great service
Fantastic setting for a VIP client dinner. Food was excellent, and the vegetarian in our group was very happy with the options he was able to choose from. Only minor complaints were server and table location - we were at a round table in the middle of the floor and the person seated with their back towards the door and bar was bumped several times in the back of the head during dinner by people walking by - It was a tight space though, and seemed unavoidable for the most part considering the table size our group needed and the space in general. Our server was charismatic but was a little pushy in encouraging varied menu selections which our client guest did not appreciate. He really just wanted the same fig salad that a few others had ordered and he didn't appreciate being badgered about it (even if in good fun).
We were seated courteously and promptly. The atmosphere was lovely and quiet in an old federal style house. Our server was outstanding, recognizing our Anniversary and making a special effort to accommodate my food intolerances. The scallop appetizer was delightful but a small portion(particularly when slit in two), and the halibut with mushroom ravioli was also delicious. The duck was just ok. The only negative was that the food was just lukewarm when it was served. Overall, it was perfect for a quiet romantic dinner!
My wife and I enjoyed it so much, we are planing on having thanksgiving dinner there with our kids.
This is an amazing restaurant in every way. The food was incredible. The staff was warm, friendly, and attentive. The restaurant itself was beautiful. We drove in bumper to bumper traffic in pouring rain for our 6pm reservation... and would do it again and again for this place.
Solid food, great location, amazing ambiance and history. Food was good, but don’t go in expecting a Michelin Star, even at the price point. Excellent cocktails and alcohol selection.
As always, amazing experience, food and service. We were celebrating wife’s new promotion.
Thank you for giving us the same table we typically get which is the far corner table for two.
Wife is not a fan of beef but she loved the beef tenderloins. Scallops with bacon are always to die for. We tried something new, the cucumber salad with figs and goat cheese. That was definitely the highlight beyond expectations.
Thank you so much
The only negative was the waiter who was kinda crabby while we were trying to celebrate a birthday.
Great food, service, top notch spot right across the street from the exorcist house.
