Wonderful Washingtonian restaurant. Our server was professional and marveled us with his recounting if the history of the restaurant.
icon was an amazing server great food, great servive great food cozy atmosphere
My wife and I returned to DC and 1789 for the first time in 20 years. We chose 1789 to celebrate our 20th anniversary and it did not disappoint. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation and were directed to the bar to wait until our table was ready. That was a good move. The young man who was the bartender was very friendly and made some awesome drinks.
After being seated at our table on time, we were served some warm bread and butter. We both had fish (halibut and the seafood soup). It was all excellent!
For dessert, we shared some ice cream that was served on a frozen plate with “Happy Anniversary” written on the side in chocolate. It was a great restaurant for a special occasion. Would have no reservations at all about eating here again. The atmosphere is intimate and historic.
For kicks, walk across the street and see the staircase from The Exorcist. It’s still creepy even after 40 years. :)
FIve tasting menu を頼んだが料理の量は予想より多くなく日本人でも大丈夫。
I arrived early than the reserved time but I spent excellent time at bar till my companions came.
The tasting menu was so excellent and that the volume was not too much even for Japanese.
I requested bottles of wine and good for 4 people.1
1789 restaurant is one of the best place to go.
Food is very good but we got placed upstairs in a rather stark room which lacks the character and ambience downstairs which is very nice. Also our food took 20-30 mins to appear which was not really what you expect for the quality of the restaurant . Our server apologized twice. The dress code seems to have been relaxed as well with all sorts of outfits now acceptable ..
Excellent food, great service
Fantastic setting for a VIP client dinner. Food was excellent, and the vegetarian in our group was very happy with the options he was able to choose from. Only minor complaints were server and table location - we were at a round table in the middle of the floor and the person seated with their back towards the door and bar was bumped several times in the back of the head during dinner by people walking by - It was a tight space though, and seemed unavoidable for the most part considering the table size our group needed and the space in general. Our server was charismatic but was a little pushy in encouraging varied menu selections which our client guest did not appreciate. He really just wanted the same fig salad that a few others had ordered and he didn't appreciate being badgered about it (even if in good fun).
We were seated courteously and promptly. The atmosphere was lovely and quiet in an old federal style house. Our server was outstanding, recognizing our Anniversary and making a special effort to accommodate my food intolerances. The scallop appetizer was delightful but a small portion(particularly when slit in two), and the halibut with mushroom ravioli was also delicious. The duck was just ok. The only negative was that the food was just lukewarm when it was served. Overall, it was perfect for a quiet romantic dinner!
My wife and I enjoyed it so much, we are planing on having thanksgiving dinner there with our kids.
This is an amazing restaurant in every way. The food was incredible. The staff was warm, friendly, and attentive. The restaurant itself was beautiful. We drove in bumper to bumper traffic in pouring rain for our 6pm reservation... and would do it again and again for this place.
Solid food, great location, amazing ambiance and history. Food was good, but don’t go in expecting a Michelin Star, even at the price point. Excellent cocktails and alcohol selection.
As always, amazing experience, food and service. We were celebrating wife’s new promotion.
Thank you for giving us the same table we typically get which is the far corner table for two.
Wife is not a fan of beef but she loved the beef tenderloins. Scallops with bacon are always to die for. We tried something new, the cucumber salad with figs and goat cheese. That was definitely the highlight beyond expectations.
Thank you so much
The only negative was the waiter who was kinda crabby while we were trying to celebrate a birthday.
Great food, service, top notch spot right across the street from the exorcist house.
Delicious food and great service
Service and food was good. The atmosphere was nice. Was able to carry a conversation with everyone at the table. The best part were we not rushed to order or leave
Always love 1789 for a special dinner while in DC once a year!
Elegant old-school place, with great staff and ambiance. Very long delay in meal arriving (45 minutes) with no explanation. But overall a pleasant experience.
Great food, old school ambiance. Wine and wine list was great. Service was friendly and solid but maybe more informal/unpolished than usual for such a restaurant.
We had an excellent experience. The host was lovely in helping us with the right table for the occasion and we are greatly appreciative. The waiter knew so much about the restaurant and was happy to answer questions about that and the menu, anything we asked. The dinner was outstanding!! Thank you 1789.
Great restaurant, special intimate ambiance, good food, perfect service
I’ve eaten at 1789 several times over the years when I am in DC. It’s always been excellent. Now my daughter is a freshman in college locally and I plan to enjoy this superb food and ambiance every time I am there. I’ve never had a bad meal or experience there.
This restaurant has it all - great atmosphere, superb service and great food. We will go back again and again.
Always a great experience at 1789. Service was outstanding. Impressive wine list and menu. Nice blend of menu selections and all were cooked to perfection.
The Duck Breast Entree has set the bar for all ducks everywhere-- love this meal!! The ambiance of the restaurant is intimate and a fabulous style of vintage DC, and you can have a wonderful conversation over a fabulous meal without yelling over typical restaurant noise you see in DC. Everytime I come to DC, I come to this restaurant, and each time I'm introducing someone new, who in turn is raving on this restaurant's decor and culinary flare.
Nice setting but food needs improvement. Service was decent. Did not arrive hot - too expensive for what you get
Dinner was excellent. Service was very good and the ambiance was intimate but not too stuffy.
Great to see a traditional atmosphere and br consistent!
Out of town visitors looking for specific unique Georgetown / DC experience and found it. Lovely all around.
My husband & I celebrated our wedding anniversary here and it was perfect. They specially addressed the menus commemorating our anniversary and delivered them alongside a very kind note. We were placed at a cozy table where the waiter created a course offering tailored to our tastes. The wine selection, crab bisque, foie gras, rack of lamp, tenderloin and apple turnover were exceptional highlights of an overall superb meal. This is definitely the place to take someone for a memorable evening.
We had never been to this great restaurant but LOVED it. We ate in the bar/club room section which offers the same menu as the main restaurant. While it’s not cheap, the drinks were generous and the apps very large. Most importantly all three of us loved EVERYTHING we ordered.
A great evening at our favorite DC restaurant. Have not been since leaving over 15 years ago. Would love to see a retro menu from Washington’s Camelot period during the Kennedy presidency
Ordered a dish but a different one came out. He must have not heard me completely. Both dishes had the same type of fish but one was a stew the other by itself.
Well, I wend there with High Hope.
I am not sure if it because we ordered too little, or there is unspoken rule for going to this kind of restaurant that you have to order a lot to show something.
The waiter double checked several times that if we only want one main dish, with three people, and two small plates and no alcohol. We are that hungry and we did not want to waste the food. And we do not drink in general.
And when we were having our food, the waiter is looking at the direction of us, which is really uncomfortable.
After, when serving a complimentary dessert, he only gave knife for each one, not even a fork. We did not even touch the dessert.
It is really a bad experience especially in this kind of restaurant and I vouched for this restaurant in front of my friends. Really really really DISAPPOINTED.
Birthday so great
Wonderful food, service and ambience. Highly recommend
Surprisingly limited menu with average food for a shiny price. Environment is great. Not what I expected.
Our first visit. Great from start to finish. Good food, good servers, good wine sommelier/manager. The full package!
