Fantastic and it's easy to get to -- especially if you live in or near Georgetown.
Best anniversary spot we’ve found in our 23 yrs together. They printed personal menus with Happy 23rd Anniversary, and served custom desserts for our occasion. We’ve eaten all over the world and this is a top 3!
We were pleasantly surprised by the menu selection and creativity. This was our first visit to the restaurant after residing in Washington, DC all of our lives. We expected a stuffier ambiance and more traditional menu. We had a wonderful, down to earth waitress who gave us truly helpful advice on ordering. I ordered the foi gras and my friend ordered the scallops for starters and both were delicious. I enjoyed a crab cake and soft shell crab with wonderful corn raviolini for my main course and my fellow diner had the Lamb Chops, which he said were the best he had ever had. We finished off with an amazing Jasmine Creme Brûlée with many components that came together to create a memorable mouthful!
All in all, we totally enjoyed our evening at the 1789 and will definitely recommend and return!
Pre theatre menu was great. Attentive service. Nice flavors.
43 wedding anniversary. We have celebrated 30 of them with 1789 over the years
Awesome! Returning guest’
An institution that has withstood the test of time. My previous meal here was 20years ago! I could be more detailed but that’s really not necessary.
We came to 1789 for dinner the night of our engagement and the whole staff made us feel so special! Our meal was amazing and the atmosphere could not have been more perfect! This restaurant will always hold special memories for us! 😊
Beautiful decor. Down hill from there, the hostess took us to a table so close to the next table we could have shared the bread. The restaurant was practically empty. We asked for another table and she had to check. The waitress apparently did not understand the drink menu or what champagne is. It was not really bar food which we were expecting in the bar. Really awful. Convenient for us but never again.
Love Tracy O'Brady's style. Every bite was delicious. I had the halibut and my husband the beef tenderloin. They were both perfect. The staff was lovely, treating us as special guests.
Food was excellent and cooked exactly like we ordered. Wait staff was attentive without being intrusive.
This restaurant has been around for a very long time. They still have very good food, very good service and a very pleasant atmosphere without being noisy. It is pricey, but for special occasions, it is worth what you pay for.
This is the second time we celebrated our wedding anniversary here. This time we both ordered the 5-course tasting menu. We were not disappointed. The food was great but not pretentious like some other fancy restaurants. It had a nice mix of veggies, fish and red meat. Every dish was perfectly prepared. I have to say that the dessert was not up to par with the rest of the meal. It was a fancy ice cream sundae but for a place like this, I expect to see some creation from their pastry chef. The wait staff was attentive but can talk a little more. Sometimes I felt they served like robots. I understand that it is difficult to find that kind of staff now given the full employment economy. I have Trump to blame for that.
A wonderful experience, but we found the dining area to be very loud.
1789 exceeded our expectations as a place to dine while visiting the Washington DC area. We ran across it while googling restaurants in the Georgetown area. It is full of character with an amazing meal. We enjoyed waiting for our table at the quaint bar. Bob, the bartender, was so pleasant and interesting. We enjoyed our premeal cocktails and conversation with him. This started our evening which was only to continue to impress. Our waiter, Michael, was wonderful with his suggestions for navigating the menu. We chose a starter of crab cake and soft shell crab. It was very good. We ordered the lamb chops and beef tenderloin as our entrees. Both were delicious and probably the best, we've ever had. We ended with the Cracker Jack Sundae. What a way to end a meal! Delicious and unique! There is not one thing that disappointed us on our visit to 1789. Wish we lived closer to frequent more often. It will be on our to-do list next time we visit the area.
Service staff, led by Tiffany, was exquisite! (Expanded facility helpfully has main level bathrooms.)
Excellent experience. We invited friends and they loved it
FANTASTIC service and food!! The soft shell crab and crab cake with corn ravioli- are you kidding me with the goodness!! Never mind the mind blowing CRACKER JACK SUNDAE- outstanding!!!! You MUST have dessert, I don’t care how full you are.
We had a wonderful dinner and the service was amazing. I would gladly go there again.
Good food , good service, good atmosphere, good value. One of the best restaurants in DC area.
We live in Santa Fe, NM, and were in DC for a few days. The food was good, and the ambiance was fine, but we are used to seeing a lot of creativity when we go to restaurants in New Mexico, and this was just good traditional fare. Service was good, and our waiter knew the dishes and the wine, and I would highly recommend the “Cracker Jack Sundae.”
A nice all around experience. Started in the new bar with great cocktails. Dinner was great with only one minor exception, dessert. Perhaps the worst interpretation of Boston Creme Pie EVER! No worries, go here and enjoy.
Fantastic as always! I’m a repeat customer who always enjoy dinning with you, thanks again!
Ate at the Bar/Club and loved it. Sean took care of us; impeccable service. Portions are large so come hungry! We will return on our next visit to DC.
As usually, food is wonderful and the newly renovated Club Room is very nice as well as the service! Much better than in the main room where waiters are not that friendly!
This has to have been one of the most amazing food events we’ve ever had. From Sean the Bartender to Stelios, our amazingly attentive server, we could not ave asked for a better experience.
Our waiter was incredible. Provided a succinct yet thorough history of the restaurant and was completely attentive though without being intrusive. Perfect service...incredible meal. We sat at the same table where President Obama dined w/ Angela Merkel.
We went here for our anniversary dinner. The ambience was awesome. Really enjoyed the experience. The food was incredible. Our waiter was exemplary and we would highly recommend dinner here.
Joanna provided outstanding service! So friendly, helpful, attentive, and patient! The asparagus soup was a awesome start to the dinner, then the salmon and swordfish were both fabulous, and prepared perfectly. The s'mores dessert was as good as advertised.
Not as good as it used t be. Our appetizers were outstanding but main courses were lacking. My wife tenderloin came out at room temperature and her spinach tart was ice cold. All of it had to be redone. My duck breast was room temperature at best and other than the thin slices of duck hash sausage had very little taste. Not worth the nearly $400 for dinner and we expected to be wowed as we had been in the past. Our server, Amber was amazing and was the bright spot of the night.

Quiet dinning and good food. Food service was rushed. It seem e as though we were being rushed through dinner and out the door.
Everything about the restaurant was elevated. The service was impeccable, the food was delicious and their cocktails and wine list was impressive. My wife and I went here for our anniversary and it was the perfect evening.
Excellent service!!!! My swordfish was overcooked and they corrected the issue right away with a smile. They brought me a delish soup while i waited for my swordfish to be cooked just right. My husband loved his rack of pork. My scallops appetizer was very generous and fabulous. Could not have dessert because it would have been too much food. I was celebrating a birthday so I was given the menu rolled up with my name on it, a truffle and at the end of the meal everyone received very tasty petit fours.
We live in Old Town and it was nice to try 1789.
Service was horrendous. Waiter didn’t introduce himself, he just placed menus on the table and walked away. He never took the time to tell us about the menu. We saw him cater to other tables well, even going as far as telling the history about the place. We thought maybe since we were dressed a little casually and ordered beers as opposed to wine that he thought we would be a “cheap” table. He asked others about allergies and we still continued to be left to the side. At one point I tried engaging him and asking what his favorite desserts were. Once we had a chance to say what we wanted he left in the middle of us ordering so we only received one out of the two items we were trying to order. We’ve never had service as negligent as this and was surprised seeing as the ambiance is upscale and the prices were higher. When we are paying for good food we expect even better service. We wish we at least had mediocre service, but apparently that wasn’t available for us. Our other assistants / waitstaff for the evening was kind, but We will not be returning.
Marvelous dishes and lovely service. The noise level was such that we had a difficult time holding a conversation.
Once again the staff went out of their way to make the dinning experience wonderful.
We were seated in the annex (near the back bar), which was a huge disappointment. Lacks all of the charm of the main restaurant.
