Maybe the chef and/or the management has changed. It was not the same experience as the last time, but the restaurant remains charming and inviting.

The food and the service was amazing. What I did not like, our table was by the bar area and the smell of the sewage was intolerable . They need to come up with some ventilation . I would love to go back just can not tolerate the smell.

The service was very good. The ambience was nice, though there were two dinner rooms. I was seated in one as the only customer. with a view on the second with more customers. I had the sweetbreads as a starter. The sweetbreads were fine, but the accompanying sauce and vegetable very bland. So, it was rather disappointing. My main problem was with the main the new York strip au poivre steak. Again, the garniture and sauce were really bland. But what was really problematic was that I ordered the steak medium rare but it was in fact well done to medium. One side was really to a degree blackened. I thought about sending it back but unfortunately I did not. Perhaps it was a one day of but...

The last time I dined at 1789 was 15 years ago and I was looking forward to the experience. Sadly, I was disappointed. Today 1789 is an overpriced anachronism. Washington’s restaurant community has evolved and left 1789 behind. i have had better meals at far lower cost in other French restaurants (e.g., La Piquette). $21 for a Buratta & Beets appetizer salad? Get serious! My partner and I shared the Cured Ocean Trout Crudo appetizer ($24). It had a mild but off-putting “fishy” flavor. We did not eat much of it. Then we both had the Brioche-Crusted Alaskan Halibut with the Artichoke a la Barigouile. It sounded great; it was not. The fish was too salty, a bit overcooked and lacking in flavor. The artichokes and sauce were rather bland. Yes, we could have sent both dishes back but it would have disrupted our celebrating my partner's birthday. On the plus side, our waiter provided excellent service. For that reason alone I left a 20 percent tip. While I hate to judge a restaurant based on just one or two dishes, given 1789’s high price point I have to conclude that it is way overpriced for what it delivers. I will not be returning.

Great spot for a romantic night. Staff helped me propose to my now fiancé and were very personable throughout the entire night. The food was top tier and the waiters/waitresses had a comprehensive understanding of each menu item. Definitely recommend for anyone who is able to treat themselves to a luxurious night out! I will definitely be returning!

This was our first time to this fabulous restaurant, but it certainly will not be our last. We had wonderful, personable, professional, and knowledgeable servers, delicious and eye catching dishes, and splendid wine choices. Everything was top notch. Made this birthday celebration extra special!

Great service and amazing food. In a darling historic building. Rack of lamb was perfection, as was the brioche crusted halibut.
