The food, service and ambiance was amazing!
The pork was all fatty to the point that I couldn’t eat it. When I mentioned I was taking it home to our dog and they could see it wasn’t edible they didn’t mind. And My husbands brioche halibut he tasted primarily the brioche. We would not go back.
I am glad to have had the experience of dining at 1789 but I would not go back. The food was cold, our server was rude and it was expensive for what you got. We dine at Clydes and Old Ebbitt quite often so was expecting a similar caliber but it was not to be had at this location. I will say, the hostess was very kind and accommodating.
We did have a wonderful chocolate dessert at Fitzgerald’s and would recommend this over 1789. Loved the atmosphere here, the vibe and the food.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the world! Not only is the restaurant a beautiful historic location, the food is always extraordinary as well as the well informed and talented staff who is so knowledgeable of the food and wines. I always request a table in the Bar Room which is especially cozy. Whenever In DC I strongly recommend this special restaurant.
Great environment, food and service for a special evening.
A very good restaurant, I just had unrealistic expectations. I have wanted to eat at 1789 since I was a Georgetown freshman decades ago. It used to be the most highly rated restaurant in DC, but turned out to be just very good, vice amazing. The crab and tuna appetizers were outstanding. My halibut was disappointing. Good, but certainly not one of the better halibuts (too dry and not much flavor) I have ever had. In fact, I have actually pan-fried halibut better at home and I am no chef. Both of my friends had the beef tenderloin. They did not comment on it, perhaps because I was the host. My guess is it was OK. In sharp contrast, they both raved about their desserts. My buddy had a beautifully arranged plate which featured what looked like a chocolate covered donut (the donut was actually ice cream). He and his wife had driven up from Florida for the weekend. He said he would make the drive again just to get that dessert.
Service was good and I thought the prices were reasonable. The atmosphere and music were both outstanding.
Great meal in wonderful atmosphere
Such an enjoyable evening. The food was delicious, the wait staff attentive; our server Chantay was on point. We will be back.
Went for birthday and good-bye celebration. We were all very happy with the "new" menu and food. A bit on the expensive side, but nice to have a high end option in the neighborhood that is very good food and service. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.
This is a wonderful place for a special occasion evening out. The ambiance is wonderful. The service was impeccable. Waitress and other staff members were very attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. This restaurant was not short of staff either. They took us on a quick tour of the restaurant as my significant other wanted to see it. Afterwards, we had a nightcap at Fitzgeralds (which is attached to 1789).
Carefully prepared cocktails, entrées also perfectly prepared and presented. Tournedos Rossini with foie gras was delectable as was the grilled octopus. I know the chef was trying to introduce some Asian influence and spices to some of the dishes but I'm not sure it worked with the Mediterranean Sea Bass which is a delicate tasting fish that was overwhelmed with the corn slaw it was sitting on.
Everything was great!
Every dish was absolutely delicious! Wonderful night out!
We moved from the DC area 4 years ago and used to rank the 1789 in the top tier of Washington residents. We hosted friends there last night and were greatly disappointed. Our salads needed both salt and pepper, had rather flavorless dressing, and tepid greens. Our server never offered a grind of pepper and no salt was on the table. My husband and I both had the pork chop, which was OK but nothing to remember the next day. Ditto for desserts. We are widely traveled and have sampled many excellent restaurants, some at much lower price points than the 1789. We had read the new chef was extremely talented. Let’s hope he was just having a less than stellar night.
Great place for dinner if you're not hungry. Entrees are small and pricey. Service was very good. Not sure there's a reason to return.
This is our “go to” fine dining when we are in WADC. Bob was the best in service and suggesting the right dish. We always enjoy our experience and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a special experience.
Lovely, intimate upscale restaurant that we really enjoyed to on our anniversary. The food was very good as was the service. Two suggestions I'd make would be a renovation/update to the main dining room where we ate. It's nice but dated and even had a bit of a damp smell to it. Also, I ask that the restaurant please maintain a dress code for this fancy spot - two men were seated near us dressed in casual NFL t-shirts. They looked ridiculous given that every other person enjoying dinner was dressed in jackets, ties and dresses. 1789 is a nice, elegant restaurant and I would hope the management would want to keep it that way.
Food and service was excellent. Could not have asked for a better experience! The duck was exceptional.
Did and service was impeccable
Excellent dining experience with an historic background. One of the few restaurants in Washington DC that provides an excellent kitchen in a old and traditional surrounding.
It was fantastic, I celebrate my 19 anniversary and it was perfect, sure I will come again.
This is an initimate restaurant in a wonderful Georgetown location. The food was excellent and the service superb. The room is small and noisy however.
An outstanding meal, well presented. It's on the short list.
Food and service was excellent. We love this restaurant.
We had a wonderful experience! We will definitely come back!
Excellent meal! Very nice cocktails, great food, good service. Great location to celebrate our anniversary!
very nice venue for a "fancy" night out, service attentive and professional, food very nice, not overly innovative though, overall nice first time for out of towners.
Consistently great for over 46 years that I have had the privilege of eating there.
My first time visiting DC in years…flight was delayed and I will still accommodated. If a special is offered, you must order it. I had the special toro appetizer and the pate (which I originally had my heart set on). Both were incredible. Country French bread and milk roll was delicious. Best Manhattan I’ve ever had. Negroni is phenomenal. I had the duck for my main which did not disappoint. The peach dessert—save room. Service was incredible. One of my top dining experiences—if you enjoy history ask the servers about the restaurant. If these walls could talk…superb. *
Not our first time, and we were not disappointed. It was exactly what we wanted, elegant, excellent food, lovely room.
Save room for deserts. They are spectacular.
Dinner at 1789 was quite possibly the best restaurant meal I've had in the past 12 months and 200 restaurant meals. The crispy lobster appetizer was wonderful, and the halibut was fabulous. The ambiance is delightful and our server friendly and professional. I'm eager to return soon!
This restaurant has special meaning to me.
The salad was fresh
My friend said spicy tuna tartare was fantastic
The halibut melted in your mouth
Fantastic food! Suggested wines were ok, maybe not the exact flavors we were expecting but worked well with the food. Great evening. Definitely, will be back.
Best duck ever. Delightful Manhattan. Divine dark chocolate dessert. Spectacular service. Get that valet service back asap.
Brain the General Manager is fantastic!!! He and his team took great care of us and we will definitely be back!!
Overall the evening was wonderful. food, wine perfect. 1789 creates a warm elegance that we value.
the only flaw was a waiter that was perfunctory but seemed uninterested in us.
His lack of interest was contrasted by the few others that waited on us. We don't expect waiters to be overly friendly but a little warmth would have been appreciated.
Most of the staff was quite gracious and he served us efficiently.
Food and service were very good, but the fact that the restaurant acknowledged my wife’s birthday when we arrived then failed to provide a complimentary dessert or even a candle our our purchased dessert was disappointing.
Two other birthdays were celebrated in that manner in our room.
Excellent place for a special occasion, or to make the day a special occasion.
It is a great restaurant for late night dining.
