1776 Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This was my first time here and we went for my daughter’s birthday. Under construction, but very cute and sat in the back room by the fireplace. Very eclectic menu with exotic game meat also.
Service was superb. We all had something different and all were very good. The vegetable Wellington was superb as was my husband’s plank salmon. My daughter has the lobster stuffed poblano pepper with champagne sauce
And my son-in-law has the crab cakes. Both raved about their entrees. The tomato basil garlic soup was the best I have had. It was the soup of the day. There is no children’ Menu. However the two
Little one had chicken fingers which worked well. They also had an option of buttered noodles.
We were a little confused because the messaging about the place suggested it was a good place to eat for vegans. We had a vegan in our group and apparently that was not really the case. He sort of gave in and said just have the chef make me something vegan. He got a plate of Risotto. That is what you serve a vegan when you have no idea what else to do with them. We had to ask to have some vegetables added which was something we would have expected to be more the main part of any vegan dish to begin with. The restaurant was a bit cold temperature wise and the service maybe 75% attentive when I do expect 100%. I don't care if you are busy, I should never feel rushed by wait staff. Don't talk to me as you walk by, stop and be calm. Food was good but you gotta step it up to actually be great.
1776 was amazing. It’s local to us, we’ve driven by it many times and finally decided to try it out. They have wonderful servers and busboys that stay on top of your every dining need. The menu has some wonderful comfort items like meatloaf and exotic such as wild game medallions. The butt steak was amazing and very tender with great flavor. The coconut shrimp was excellent and the buckwheat noodle side was tasty. The calamari appetizer with fresh Pico de Gallo and tomatillo sauce was super good and fresh. A salad came with my meal and was very fresh and the ranch dressing was delicious. Usually the salad is just an afterthought with dinner and this one was lightly tossed in the dressing and crisp. It had a unique curly lettuce that was mild in flavor and colorful. Definitely need to try this gem in Crystal Lake.
We have always enjoyed our meals at 1776 and our latest dinner was no exception. The food was excellently prepared and served in a very timely fashion, nothing rushed. Out waitress was very knowledgable about the menu and the specific food and seasonings. My only disappointment / concern was over the fact that the online menu does not always align with the menu at the restaurant. For example, not all the appetizers listed online were available at the restaurant. The waitress was apologetic over this matter. We enjoy the atmosphere, but feel that the theme, 1776 is not carried out well with the appearance of the staff. I'm not suggestion clothing that would correspond to what was worn in 1776, but several on staff didn't appear dressed in a way fitting for the restaurant. Parking can be quite difficult due to the next door movie theater.
Recent reviews talked about noise but thankfully I didn't have that experience. Definitely cold in the dining room and hope they do something about that. The food was excellent. I had the plank salmon and it was perfectly cooked. They don't drown it in sauce. The pesto was superb. This is basically the quality you'd expect out of a very nice restaurant in Chicago but it's located in Crystal Lake. Their top shelf bar offerings were very nice and I was pleasantly surprised they had Prairie gin and knew how to mix a French 75. We lingered for a bit over coffee and conversation and never once felt rushed. The service was attentive but not intrusive. I'd definitely go back. Their specials change every day but if you check out their menus on their website, you'll start to get a feel for their cuisine. Bon appetit!
Active remodeling on the building made the conversation difficult. They appear to be adding an "airlock" to the entrance (which is needed since the entry door opened right into the dining room, however the carpenters were power-sawing, hammering & banging directly outside our window and on the roof above us all during the meal. Perhaps due to the construction, the temperature in the dining room was very cool. In fact, the owner was walking around the dining room chatting with customers while wearing a long winter coat.
The food was outstanding, altho 2 of the 4 entrees were delivered to the table, then after a couple minutes, the 3rd arrived, and finally a few minutes later the 4th dish was brought. The restaurant was less than half-full, so that seemed odd.
The food quality helped compensate for the building and service issues, but it would have been much better without those issues. I will give them another try after the construction is completed.
Great local spot! Food is fresh and delicious. Great wine list and cocktails. Wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion (we celebrated our wedding anniversary). If you tell your waitress or hostess you’re there for a celebration, they’ll be sure to bring out a special dessert (don’t worry about any weird singing - they’re very classy about it).
We found the evening absolutely wonderful. The service was impeccable, the hot rolls and butter with flecks of flavored salt , and the appetizer of portabella mushrooms in a red sauce was fabulous. The wine was excellent, but my brick chicken was terrible. It was dry and tough, I could not eat it. I was was looking forward to a succulent local raised chicken, but I could not even bite into it. I brought it home uneaten, and we could not even pull it apart with our hands. My husbands fresh caught Trout however, was absolutely delectable, perfectly cooked, and my husband savored every bite. Our waiter had eyes in the back of his head, and he seemed to be there for us for every possible need. So many beautiful touches were added to beautifully plated food. So, all in all, we had a lovely date night, with the one exception of poorly cooked chicken or product, or both.
We stumbled on this restaurant by accident five years ago and without knowing that it's pricey - but once we had the food, we were hooked, and now come back once or twice a year for special occasions. 1776 is one of the bext farm-to-table restaurants I've ever been to, and while they currently remodeling under new ownership, the chef is the same (and has been for 24 years, according to our waiter). We drive an hour to get there, but it is absolutely worth it.
This was our first visit to this restaurant, and we were totally impressed! A very creative menu, and the food items are from local farmers. We loved every item we got, including the trio of soups, lobster salad, tuna tartar, etc. We consider ourselves foodies, and we were shocked to find a restaurant of this caliber in Crystal Lake. A bonus was the impressive wine selection at every price point. And, finally, a restaurant that knows how to make sorbet with fresh fruit that is not loaded with sugar! Keep up the great work. We will definitely be back.
1776 is one of the few restaurants I can dine at. I have celiac disease and a shellfish allergy .The owner Rhienna also has celiac disease, her and chef Santi understands the severity of cross contamination. The food is always wonderful, we enjoyed the 40 oz Tomahawk steak. The wine list is exceptional as well as the staff. Thank you again for a great meal and a wonderful evening! Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary!
This is one of the few very good restaurants in McHenry County. Some interesting foods and recipes and properly cooked standards. Good choices of wines, beers and whiskeys. Reasonable prices. Tables a bit crowded together, but quiet enough for conversation. The new owner (as of this past year) is very attentive.
Food was very good and presentation was outstanding. The restaurant had been remodeled but the ceilings were very low. It was loud and you felt closed in. Staff was great they even sent the bar manager over to our table because we had questions about the bourbon list. He was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to talk with.
The renovation is very nicely done and gives a warm feeling. We were seated within minutes and our server cam to our table quickly. We were all very happy with our entree choices and the prices are consistent with similar area restaurants. We definitely will return!
Cup of soup is overpriced thimble. My husband got soup flight and it was same size soups as my cup all lacking in flavor. My $59 ribeye special was burnt charred on the outside and we'll done then med rare in middle served with a charred baked potato that was sliced and also whipped mashed potatoes!!! Which was odd! I wouldn't go there for dinner again.
My opinion of 1776 is mixed. My date and I dine out frequently and the menu at 1776 was definitely more interesting than most menus we encounter. I had a goat cheese and lobster filled pepper over vegetable lasagna. The flavors exceeded my expectations; however, my entrée was served only slightly warm. My date had a meat medley of elk, antelope and bison which he enjoyed albeit one of the meats was served a little too rare for his taste. Overall, we were pleased with the quality of the food and originality of the menu.
My largest compliment was the service from the hostess who pointed us to the bar while we waited for our table to the owner who stopped by our table to make sure we were happy. Our server was very attentive and pleasant.
My largest complaint would be the cold air as the entrance opens directly into the dining room which can be problematic when it's cold outside and we were a few rows away from the door so it was surprising we were feeling the chill.
I'd definitely give it another try and would recommend to others.
Food was terrific. The main issue was the service. It wasn’t terrible but our server was overwhelmed. The hostess was great and actually did a lot of the service at the beginning and unfortunately our waitress could barely check on us. We also were crammed at our table with some pull out doors right behind us. It was a very tight fit. Was really hoping for an amazing time at 1776 but it turned out only to be a very good dinner. I’ll be back but was just slightly disappointed. Again, food was delicious.
Saw this place in passing one day while heading to a pumpkin patch. Googled the menu and made reservations later that day. After our date night there- I am blown away. Phenomenal food, impeccable service, and the perfect atmosphere. Bring a sweater if you get chilly fast, otherwise an absolutely wonderful dinner.
The Forest Mushroom Soup, Indian Wild Game Sticks, Maryland Crab Cakes, Rack of Lamb & Filet Mignon were perfectly seasoned & cooked. I will most definitely be returning, and sending folks here!
