The York Harbor Inn’s recently renovated restaurant- “1637”, offers wonderful ocean view dining in a landmark historic inn. Upon entering the dining room, you are welcomed to the past, present and future in both atmosphere and culinary art. Our menu, featured in Food & Wine Magazine, emphasizes native seafood, creatively prepared and artfully presented, as well as casual, contemporary cuisine. Menu highlights include our gourmet Flatbreads made with our own smoked sausage or fresh lobster meat, Lobster Tempura, a Ploughman’s Platter featuring house cured meats and homemade sausage, a Raw Bar menu featuring fresh oysters, shrimp, and clams, Corn and Lobster Chowder and our locally famous Seafood Chowder, as well as the best in steaks and pasta dishes. A mixed bag. My wife started with a beet salad that was extraordinary and I had a seafood chowder that was loaded with seafood. But the entrees...my wife ordered Beef Brochettes done medium and received rare beef, I ordered Seafood Ravioli that came with overcooked shrimp.
View and ambience alone are worth the visit. Prices on the higher side of average, but not expensive. Quality of foid is good, but some if the dishes seemed to be prenafe and warmed up, drying out the food. This was noticed on the appetizers and side dishes, not the main courses.
I had the sea food in a broth over pasta. Was wonderful, but portion was small. Service was great at desk but average at table. Could use more attention to changing silverware and plates with appetizer and main courses.
I loved the place and will likely return.
This restaurant is always a highlight during our weekend getaways to the Kittery Outlets! No matter the season, the view out the multiple windows is quaint and peaceful. The food id innovative and always delicious. The ambience is conducive to a romantic date night.
We visited the restaurant twice during a short stay (mini-moon) in York. Saturday the hostess, waiter, and back of the house were all aware of the food allergies of my wife and we had an excellent dinner. This review is really of the second trip. The hostess, recalling us from Saturday, was aware of my wife's food allergies. We don't know if this information was relayed to the waiter, but we did inform him of the same to ensure an issue free dinner. The waiter wrote nothing concerning my wife's allergies. We took this as a bad sign, but some waitstaff don't and recall everything just fine. We placed our order, which appeared to get lost, as people who ordered after us received their meals first. My wife's plain haddock was delivered with bread crumbs. Since gluten was one of my wifes listed allergies, this was not good. The waiter offered to have it made again, we declined, as we could not fathom how plain haddock, with a baked potato could have gotten screwed up. We paid our bill with a minimal tip and left. Service was terrible. The waiter we had on Monday was terrible. No manager came to apologize. Overall a terrible experience this time. Not going to rush back.
We stayed overnight in the Inn so were able to enjoy two meals - both incredibly good. Basic bread basket served first with roasted garlic and oil spread. We both had the 8 oz filets the first night - cooked exactly as asked for (which is a nice change from most places which over or undercook meats), with lightly roasted asparagus and polenta as sides. Polenta a nice change from mashed potatoes, lightly seasoned, buttery and overall wonderful flavor. Second night - Korean Salmon - once again cooked to perfection served with a lightly season rice and roasted asparagus. Servings were a healthy-size with a simple beautiful presentation. For guests staying over, there is a complimentary full breakfast buffet. Nothing better than enjoying breakfast with an ocean view.
We love this place! But things were a little off on our last visit. A skunk outdated bottle of beer for one, a flat beer from the tap on another, had to wait quite a while for drink replacements, then they ran out of bread and had to wait for Some to thaw, all very off from the normal. Wasn’t a great night but we will be back and how this was one off night.
Had the seafood chowder which was a 10/10. One of the best chowders we had on our trip. Had a special of the night which was a scallops dish cooked perfectly; had a surprising apple and pear and butternut squash added to it but was a perfect compliment. Had flatbread with lobster which was okay and could've probably skipped to be honest. Great experience overall. Great service, and would definitely recommend.
We've been to this restaurant many times and it never disappoints. The food was outstanding, service was excellent and and the prices are reasonable for this type of restaurant. Without a doubt they serve the best seafood chowder. Their garden salad was fresh, tasty and not drowning in salad dressing. The special that evening was a dish of scallops, sweet potato ravioli in a cream sauce that was to die for. While we didn't order dessert, they do provide a sweet ending of home-made toffee with the bill. (Yum!) Just a wonderful meal to cap off a very nice day on the coast of Southern Maine. We will be back!
The food was good, except for the daily special, fried oysters. These were way undercooked. The batter was still wet and the texture was horrible. The portion size was also small, but that is probably a good thing for this particular dish. The location of the restaurant and the wine list were both excellent. The Red Schooner and Belle Gloss wines from Wagner were priced at only slightly above retail. The view and beverage selection would draw me back for an evening drink, but the suspect kitchen staff would cause me to eat elsewhere.
I have not written a review for sometime because we have been dining out a lot this year. This time I had to make an exception. This restaurant hit all the right notes, from the original greeting by our host to the beautiful decor to our server Ian who was excellent. This place oozes charm,from the colonial structure to the lovely bay windows over looking York Harbour. This was a special ocasion for me as I had traveled back east to see my 90 year old mother and my sister who helps her everyday. I wanted something special for them and found it on opentable. The food was glorious from the cocktails to the appetizers to the main courses. I could go on but let me finish by saying if you are in this area take time to dine here. Take it from me I was born in southern New Hampshire and tried many restaurants, this is by far my favorite.
Great place - have been going here for years. The inn is not waterfront but is directly across the street - the views of the Atlantic from the restaurant are beautiful. The space is arranged so there's not a bad seat in the house. Very cozy - almost old fashioned, one of the things I love about it. Food is very good - very New England. Love lobsta? You can get it here any number of ways. Nice bar menu and great wine list. If you want something trendy, this probably isn't your place. Want something comforting, you'll love it here.
As always, YHI fulfilled all expectations. Beautiful view of the ocean, excellent wine selections, and of course the best entrees anywhere. Crab stuffed haddock baked to perfection, baked scallops and (special request) baked shrimp melt in your mouth, and a filet of beef which was perfectly cooked, tender and tasty, and large enough to share with the fish-eaters.
