14K Restaurant & Lounge - The Hamilton DC Ratings and Reviews
Came in to meet a friend for lunch during Restaurant Week. Prices were good relative to the usual menu. Had the minestrone soup as a starter and could only taste cayenne pepper - no vegetables, meat broth or potato flavors at all. Gave up after half a bowl. Had the salmon steak (bone in), wild rice with grilled asparagus. Salmon was incredibly bland, wild rice decent, while the asparagus was the highlight of the dish. The only thing that saved the meal was dessert: Dublin Strip was the Chocolate Bomb! BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE GUINNESS GANACHE WITH
TWO LAYERS OF CHOCOLATE SPONGE CAKE, SOAKED IN GUINNESS STOUT,
AND FINISHED WITH CHOCOLATE GLAZE - perfect!
I'm convinced that if this restaurant weren't connected to the Hamilton Hotel, it would be out of business. For starters, our waiter was terrible. He couldn't answer basic questions about the menu: the menu indicates different types of mimosas, but he had no clue what they were, and seemed confused when we asked if he could find out and let us know. He also was clueless about possible vegetarian options available, and again, didn't seem to take the initiative to find out. Additionally, the brunch menu sounds like a true value - entrees for $10!! However, upon inquiry, we were told the brunch menu is all tapas style, which is mentioned NOWHERE on the menu. Plus, the menu couldn't be more different than the one posted online, which is what enticed us to the restaurant initially.
Overall, there was lots of confusion and ineptitude on the part of the staff. We asked the manager if the chef could honor the online menu, so as not to lose our business, and to the manager's credit, he tried to be helpful, which we appreciated, but the chef ultimately said no. (NOTE: this is Business 101 - always try to accommodate the customer in your restaurant - especially if your restaurant is otherwise essentially empty!) Ultimately, we left after our first round of mimosas.
This is my second time having brunch at 14K and each time has been gracious and enjoyable. The staff is always knowledgeable and the food has been prepared exactly how I have asked each time as well. The only drawback is that the bathrooms are on a separate floor, but as this establishment is in a hotel, it is understandable. The décor is great. I highly recommend 14K to anyone.
The connecting bar was hosting a social event that was too noisy to hear our table conversation at the other end of the restaurant. The waiter was patronising and rushed us. The food was reasonable quality and was served in good time, but was expensive and the noisy bar and unsatisfactory service means that I would not recommend this restaurant for any reason.
I would recommend for it's outdoor seating but otherwise, probably not. Food if okay.
They've updated their sidewalk-patio which is a nice touch. Our waiter, Oscar, was great. I ordered the fish tacos and they were drenched in a red sauce to the point that i couldn't taste the fish. Definitely wouldn't order that again.
The restaurant manager who greeted me at the door was very rude from the time I walked in , once I was seated & also at the champagne bar.. He continued with slick comments and showed poor customer service. The champagne bartenders noticed his behavior as well and advised me that they would send the manager over him to my table. Although he showed poor customer service to myself and my date the food was great and the host as well as my server were fantastic. We will be back !
Arrived at the restaurant at 7:10 for our 7pm Valentine's Date. I was surprised to see the restaurant wasn't. I mentioned to the host and he said they had just settled from a big rush. My boyfriend and I Were seated right in the middle of the restaurant. There we only 3 tables surrounding that had been occupied but both well into their meal. I noticed 2 servers as well as another host. More tables began to sit after us. One of which was served before. I then noticed a man who seemed to be the owner making rounds at the to check on guest. I hoped to get his attention as 25 minutes had passed with no service. Another man then appeared after 35 minutes and pointed out to one of the two servers that we were waiting. She was serving the table just next to us. She stopped and took our drink order. Then the second of the two servers came and took our food. He was very upbeat and friendly. The man who I thought was the owner came with our drinks. I commented "now everyone is serving us!" He said it was because we were special. The rest of the dining experience was good. I did notice the first server took her tables champagne request while we were instructed to help ourselves to the bottomless bar whichbwas located in the next room. The food was good nothing to rave about.
Stayed at Hamilton for NYE and dinner. Dining room didn't seem very organized. Back bar area was stripped of bar stools and tables set up to fit more diners but felt like a sports bar with TVs on and disco type lighting on in preparation for DJ coming on at 9PM. Asked to be moved to regular dining are, which had tables packed in so much that it was difficult for servers to get to tables. Main entrée arrived before we finished our salad and really no apology. Food runner just removed salad plates and went on about their business.
Server Annemarie was very pleasant.
I had a good experience, overall. I wasn't expecting a three course meal, since I had thought they would have the Thanksgiving buffet all day. Their website wasn't clear about that. But the manu of course had some traditional dishes, so I had a little bit of everything. The service was very good.
The food was very good overall. It was a little cramp but that is expected for Thanksgiving. The family enjoyed the food and had a nice selection for a buffet style dining experience. My son loved the stuffing. I really enjoyed the turkey. I would say it is very much worth a second trip and the price was reasonable, considering it was a buffet.
The food was surprisingly very good and well cooked. There was a wide variety of traditional Thanksgiving food choices. Turkey, Ham, prime rib, smoked salmon and boiled shrimp. Sides included stuffing, gravy, bernaise sauce, horseradish sauce, mashed potatoes, sugared sweet potatoes, steamed vegetable medley, and salads. The desserts were bland, grocey store variety and forgetable except for the cupcakes. We enjoyed the endless "Champagne" Bar which featured Sonoma Creek sparkling wine in about 10 varieties. We drank the Champagne Cobbler which was refreshing. The service was very attentive but the waiter was not knowledgable of the drinks and food. The restaurant was a brasserie/cafeteria style but the price was right.
We felt welcomed immediately. Host seating was friendly and straightforward without pretense. The wait staff is experienced, while just a bit too abrupt. While many restaurant staff are too friendly, our experience would have benefitted from a more informed waiter. My guest must eat gluten free and the waiter was not able to answer basic questions about gluten in soup.
All this minor negative aside, the meals were well prepared and delicious. My crab soup was so good I apologized to my guest for using bread to capture all of it. My Cobb salad was the best presentation of ingredients and set of tastes I have ever experienced.
Again a minor frustration with the waiter was slow response to closing out our check and moving us on our way. Business lunches are generally schedule driven and guests should be able to move on quickly once the meal is over.
I used opentable to make a reservation for my wife's birthday and requested a nice table and let them know that it was a birthday dinner. The restaurant was empty, and we were given an awkward table in the back of the restaurant. The service was okay, but the food was very bland and tasteless. The food presentation was nice and the decor was nice. No dessert was offered and we left. Overall, it was very disappointing.
The food was great, it was dead in the restaurant, while the servers were awkward to us. The servers were cracking jokes in between themselves and just made us awkward, and weren't very attentive. Meanwhile the restaurant wasn't extremely busy for a Saturday, they were taking their time.
Great food. Service was prompt and polite. It was unfortunate that the outdoor seating overlooked a park filled with homeless people, however. It made for an awkward and slightly unpleasant experience (it's hard to enjoy your meal in front of people who can't afford to eat, you know?). The restaurant can't help this, but it was just something to note.
14K won't make the top list of anything but it is generally very good and reasonably priced. I happen to think they prepare fish really well and I have never been disappointed. This time I tried their cobb salad with NY strip added on top - cooked medium rare to perfection. Awesome! Service on this particular night was very slow so that was the only thing I was not happy with.
We enjoyed our stay at the hotel and dined at this restaurant several times because we loved the food! The Margarita Flatbread was the best we've ever had. Our wait staff was attentive and friendly and it looks as though they have a nice happy hour crowd as well. My son was interested in a full course meal and chose the salmon, I was tempted by their salads and was not disappointed. Their menu worked out well for us.
