We go to 12th Ave Grill about twice/month. It's our "neighborhood" dining option. It never disappoints.
We got stuck at the smallest 2-top table (so small we had to stagger our entrees’ timing). The food was just ok but really expensive. Salad was bland- the dressing literally tasted like water and oil. Lamb osso bucco wasn’t perfectly cooked (it wasn’t tender and it was dry) and the gravy was watery. Entrees need side dishes to complete the meal, even though they range from $30-40 each. Wine list is terrible.
Atmosphere was good. Little loud but I am glad we had a table that was towards the side. The Jidori Chicken was wonderful. You can always tell a good cook when the chicken breast is moist and the flavors were spot on.
Waitress was nice and attentive. All in all a very nice evening.
The restaurant week menu was amazing! The lamb was delicious and both the appetizers were flavorful! We also ordered a side of their Mac n Cheese - we just had to! It’s that goooood!
Thank you Corey for your excellent service and recommendations on our red wine selections!
Spent get better or more consistent! Go ... just go!
The oily food actually gave me a stomach ache, so I couldn’t finish the prie fix meal for restaurant week. The osso bucco was in a bowl with so much fat and oil. I only ate one and chose to toss the rest.
One of our very favorite restaurants on Oahu! The "Restaurant Week" menu was amazing and the food truly exceptional. Thank you Kevin and Denise for making your restaurant one we enjoy whether at the Craft Bar or in the Dining Areas. You have hired wonderful, service oriented Bartenders, Wait Help and Host Help. All so very good. =)
Restaurant Week $39 3-courses menu:
1) smoked ahi bruschetta- good, with refreshing and balanced flavors
2) lamb osso buco- PERFECTION, with that oh so juicy fatty marrow, that cheesy saffron polenta and perfectly cooked brocollini
3) guava cheesecake bread pudding- good but skimpy on the guava cream anglais.
The house made breads and cocktails were on point.
Service was really good (our waitress was friendly and made really good detailed recommendations regarding the cocktails), but slow (probably due to being extra busy for restaurant week). Definitely would come back.
The food was excellent except for their signature pork chop dish. It was overcooked, dry and tough. I expect better quality control at their prices.
Pork chop was amazing!
Service was great !
They had a kids menu which had good and tasty options
We had a bit of a wait before being seated otherwise overall experience was enjoyable.
Very poorly executed dishes. Portions were extremely generous however. The lamb osso buco was dry and tasteless with an oily aftertaste. The guava cheesecake bread pudding was underwhelming. Service was prompt and efficient.
It’s just what you need at the end of any day and will appreciate any night. Come casual or classy and you’ll still feel right at home. Sophisticated local creations for dining and adult beverages provides you with unique tastes for your palate which is sure to make you want to return.
The good: free birthday dessert and the martini. Wine Wednesday looked to be a hot but only at the bar which was V packed by 5:45.
The bad: almost every dish was over cooked - the ahi tartare was too much like canned tuna with too much mayo . The opah special was dry and the sauce while good was a bit heavy. The brownie dessert was dry and over baked. One of two breads tasted old and weird, the other was like Safeway bread. No half off wine specials at a table, only 50% off bottles.
Service - The service persons were nice. The martini was delivered to the wrong pers without a word. The dessert was delivered with candle and it was happy relit by the delivering person. We even shared a laugh. The handwritten birthday card was cute.
Ambiance - the place was really clean. (I have a first bunny aversion.) the General dining area was recently redone. That said the rearranging of tables during our service was a bit annoying. And if I had dinner reservations for two for more than two days, why place us at a table set for four?
This wasn’t our first visit to the restaurant so I’m being very fair with this review. Every other time we’ve visited we’ve always left 100% satisfied. This time I left thinking of similar restaurants that we should have gone to instead.
Conclusion: I’m not opposed to going back since everyone has an off day now and again, but it will probably be more of an impromptu rather then a planned visit based on this last experience. Or I’ll sit at the bar where there’s a fantastic bartender.
Disappointing. The recommended Jidori chicken was dry and overly charred.
Excellent food, great service, all reasonably priced.
I have been coming here for years whenever. I feel like a treat. Last night was a huge disappointment. We had a reservation but waited 30 minutes to be seated. I specifically requested a table not too close to the bar because it was noisy. We were seated next to the bar. We got drinks and an appetizer fairly quickly, but we were finished by the time the waitress came back to take our order for our main course. Since it was so busy I decided to order something fail safe - a steak, medium rare. It was a definite medium with overdone fries. It had a good flavor but was covered in waxy, unrendered globs of fat making it hard to eat. My fiend had lamb, good but a tiny portion. We skipped dessert. It seems like 12th Avenue grill has become a victim of its own success - unorganized reservations, hit or miss food, perfunctory service.
To define the perfect restaurant you must have the total package. That means a great greeting upon arrival with the true Aloha Spirit. Super ambiance with a nice mellow acoustic level. Excellent service from the bussers to your main waiter. Then of course creative and exciting food and that includes a wine list that’s affordable and marries to the food. 12th has all of the above and adds a list of specials every single night. Transport 12th to NYC and you better plan a month in advance when making reservations. Last night we had a crudo that melted in your mouth with a slight texture and possibly the best lamb burger we’ve ever had.
This is our go to restaurant in Honolulu. I find consistency can be an issue for many restaurants but 12th Ave Grill is always consistent. Great Farm/Sea to table restaurant with an excellent wine list. Everyone we have encountered at 12th Ave Grill is super friendly and they want to make sure you are happy before you leave. One of our favorite places.
We really enjoyed our meal sitting at the bar. The bartender was very knowledgeable about wines and helped with food suggestions. Really enjoyed our ribeye and osso bucco. We will return soon.
We had a great time. The food was delicious!
We were late to our reservation and they were incredibly gracious about it.
Food, service, and drinks were great as always!
Cory was our server the evening we dined.
Great service provided by him and his team.
We were celebrating our friends 80th birthday and pick the perfect spot to dine! The food never disappoints and the service was excellent. Cory was our waiter and he was very knowledgeable about the menu and made great suggestions.
Great food. Great descriptions, humor, and service from Tony
Always great food and service. One of our favorites!
Always a pleasant experience here. Great food and service.
It was as good as the first time when we revisited it that day. My wife, son, however this was our second time this restaurant did not disappoint us in providing the best experience of dining there. We are looking forward to returning back there in the not so far away in the near future.
Excellent slow cooked food from a menu to please every palate. Unpretentious service and ambiance; no loud music to drown out your dinner conversation. We’re so glad we found out about this place right before our trip to Oahu! We had the scallops, lamb osso buco, steak frites, the fish special, and roast chicken. All very tasty and beautifully presented!
Went for the Sunday supper and was not disappointed. Opakapaka and chips were great and the dessert was just enough to finish what was a great meal. We also had the scallops, which were good as usual..
Haven't been eating out too much lately so this meal was wonderful.
Food was mediocre, but the service was just the worst experience I have ever encoutered! With 3 of us coming from the food service arena, service was very unprofessional, sarcastic and just a 'don't care' attitude. Of course, our waiter said he prides himself on service - - this was the most ludicrous statement he could have made because it was HE that made this an unpalatable experience. We would have had better service at Palolo McDonald's! Seriously! Don't waste your money here. You can get a much more tasty and hot meal from Big City Diner around the corner. If want a place to make an impression on your date or celebrate a special occasion, look through OpenTable for another option - NOT 12th Avenue Grill!
Our dinner was perfectly prepared. The pork chop done with a bit of char on the edges, just the way it should be. Opah done well, not dry, not undercooked. Sitting on top of somen made a well balance plate.
We enjoyed our meal very much. We didn’t feel like a tourist and it seems like an upscale place where locals go.
MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT. EVERYTHING IS MAGICAL. Servers, food, drinks, ambiance.
This was a very special evening, wonderful and creative food pairings. Could not have been better!
Excellent Food and Inviting staff and ambiance.
First let me say, that there were at least 2 dishes that i tried that I would go back for AND there were at least 3-5 more that I would go back to try.
Everything about the experience was well done.
The Pork Saltimbocca was excellent so perfectly cooked with a salty crispy skin, the Mai Tai delicious, the sweet pickled peppers complimented the richness off the main course perfectly and the Caesar salad very nice.
I'd definitely go back.
Another Sunday Supper: 12th Ave Grill’s Famous Buttermilk Fried Chicken ,Manoa honey buttered biscuits, caramelized shallot mashed potatoes, roasted local roots, smoked sausage gravy. Dessert is Peaches & Cream Upside Down Cake. Add one of the best French Rhône wines from 12th’s awesome wine list( and don’t forget a waitstaff that takes the Aloha Spirit to heart) and you have the makings for a totally memorable dinner and it was.
Ambience is good, service was good, Food was too salty. Two dishes - scallops and lamb Osso Buco. Even though the scallops were of good quality, due to the saltiness, you could not experience the sweetness of the scallops.
