This cafe is a true little gem. I took my mom here for Mothers Day & we can't wait to go back! The staff was very attentive & kind. The food was phenomenal! The chef changes the menu often to keep fresh, local foods on the table. This is a wonderful place for lunch with a good friend or a good old date night. I will definitely return.
My wife and I went to 128 Cafe for our first time on Mother's Day, 2016. We have lived within 10 miles of this location for almost 35 years but had never been to this restaurant. We had a great brunch meal for Mother's Day. The food was delicious, the service prompt and courteous, the setting was delightful. We can't wait until we can try an evening dinner at this hidden gem in
The roasted garlic with toasts, chutney and apple slices--coupled with the Argyle sparking wine--was an excellent start to the meal. The nettle soup was as beautiful as it was tasty--and not something you find on very many menus (...sadly).
Food was great, if you have play tickets, might want to allow extra time. Wonderful leisurely place to dine!
Thanks for being a platinum sponsor for the "dining out for life "
Tucked into a little corner of a non-descript building in St. Paul, 128 Cafe was a delight. We got a reservation because they took part in a charity fund-raiser, and took a chance though we liked what we saw of the menu and online reviews. We were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, the food and the service.
We would go back again, both the salmon I had and the pork chop my wife dined on were delicious. From heritage pork to the "umami bomb vinaigrette" we had a nice treat. Even had dessert (which we don't usually do these days)...it was that good.
Best Dessert experience EVAR!!! The Banana-Rhubard pastry with vanilla ice cream, brown sugar crumbles and cinnamon...omg! So, good.
128 is always a nice quiet dinner with very good food. Their ribs are the best in town.
Everything on the menu is so delicious - from the bread to the dessert, appetizers, main courses - and the intimate atmosphere reminds one of a small European or French Canadian restaurant. Really a fantastic place!
Love, love, loved the Pork Chop Dinner...so tender and tasted so good and savory with sweet pairings! I am still craving it again! Thank you for truly taking time to make beautiful dishes! Our dessert was great too!
The restaurant is small, but charming and quaint. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable, however the food took quite awhile to come out. We had a play to go to and ended up being a little late due to slow service. We only ordered a salad and risotto to share. It all tasted great, so I would try it again when I don't have any kind of timeline.
We met an out-of-town friend here to catch up on old and new times. Delicious food, quiet atmosphere, and friendly staff add up to a wonderful place for conversation. My pork tenderloin and poached pear salad - and a nice glass of Malbec - were perfect.
Met up with Minneapolis friends for their first visit. They loved the pear salad and we loved the beets. The men had steak and it was fantastic. The pot roast was warm and comforting. The salmon was special. Don't expect a ton of space for a big crowd but do expect great service and awesome food.
I recently visited the St Thomas neighborhood 128Cafe for the first time. It had a nice homey feel, attentive wait staff, and amazing food. The Roasted Garlic plate was wonderful, I'd like to eat it again... right now! Do they deliver? And the pot roast was so much better than Mom's - I didn't want to tell her that though since she was sitting across from me :)
Overall this was a great dining experience and one is like to repeat again soon.
The burger and the pot roast were worth every penny! Can't wait to come back and try the other delectable things we saw on the menu. Very quiet, and cozy, a great place for date night.
Went here for the first time for restaurant week. The food was fantastic and we left very happy. Look forward to coming back!
What a great restaurant. I attended UST (college in the area) and always saw the place but never considered dining there. Finally went and did not regret it one bit. Amazing salmon on my plate, and my gf's baby back ribs were absolutely mouth-watering. Would recommend to everyone who can afford it lol.
I have been to 128 Cafe for Mother's Day brunch and for a Friday night dinner. The food was amazing both times. As was the wine. The noise level for dinner was quite high though so if you're looking for a quiet spot to enjoy a nice romantic evening, this might not be the place for you. I will definitely go back for more. I loved the interesting flavors and really enjoy an ever-changing menu!
small place but great food and service. We will certainly come back again and try some of the other wonderful dishes.
Service was very good. Prompt, not intrusive. Nice place for a quiet dinner. Salmon dish and beet salad were both excellent. My dining partner said the ribs were just okay. Definitely recommend as a nice neighborhood restaurant. It is a little expensive, but I'd go back.
This is my go to place any chance I get. Never miss a wine dinner or restaurant week opportunity. It's a favorite place to bring out of town co workers too. Love the use of interesting ingredients. Feb 2016 restaurant week did not disappoint. Max does an exception job with his seafood specials. I seldom get a chance to order off the menu. Great knowledgable servers.
I have been going to 128 Cafe for over 15 years, and our recent visit--the first time in 3 years--was decidedly lackluster. We were there Friday night, and one person in our party ordered a bottle of wine; it was no longer available. Then we placed our orders, and one person wanted the broccoli rabe; again, it wasn't available. We ordered a starter to share, and the server forgot about it and had to be reminded. The main courses were all rather mediocre. In short, I won't be returning any time son.
We had another great experience at 128. The pot roast and shrimp and grits were yummy. I only wish there were veggies on the plates. You can order a veggie side but we always forget.
Three of us had a meal out here and we're all very impressed with the quality of the food. We had the roast chicken, pot roast and a salmon dish. All had a good quantity of vegetables and we're all delicious.
Service was good including the free valet parking.
Love the discreet atmosphere and homey feeling. Good value too!
Great menu options for this evening (not their typical menu). Wonderful atmosphere!
Will certainly dine at 128 cafe again! The food was fabulous and the atmosphere and staff was charming. My husband and I loved 128 cafe!!
I love the seasonal menu. The garlic crostini are absolutely amazing, as is every thing else I've had there.
My boyfriend and I agreed that the beef roast was the best we've ever had. We definitely will go back for it or some other delicious item from the menu. Great food, great experience!
Suggestion. The glaze in the salmon be applied directly on the fish and not on the skin.
The intimate setting was unique. The food was exceptional. They respected and fulfilled our timeline.
Great food, great service and sweet little space! I highly recommend 128 for a great dinner in a coy space!
We had a very poor dining experience at 128 Cafe. My wife and I each had a burger. She cut her burger in half and it was very rare. (Mine was as well.) She sent hers back. The same burger, still cut in half, came back just minutes later. The cook had simply seared the cut edges. Inside it was still rare inside. Our server apologized and took that item off of our bill, but that it was so clearly the same burger, and that it was still rare, was very disappointing. A cook should know that simply searing the cut edge would not cook the burger. The rest of the meal was fine: Good soup and salad, good wine, good service.
I recommend this place for those who seek a first experience romantic dine-in that offers a cozy classy vintage atmosphere. Service is awesome and they even have valet service in the cold winter days! The bill may get pricey, but it doesn't matter if you want to have a great time with your date (for them gentlemen out there).
Great location for dinner with a small group people. Great food and location
A nice quiet neighborhood restaurant. Service was friendly and thoughtful. Two members in our party ordered the salmon dinner and rated it below average. Both felt the salmon was over cooked (dry) and lacked flavor. Other menus items were all pleasing and would be ordered again.
My wife and I decided to duck out into the snow and walked down to Cafe 128. We had a fantastic date night meal and can't wait to be back to this neighborhood gem!
Service, wine options and ambiance were all very nice. A group of us went for the Tuesday Night Rib Special~ The food was lovely to look at and delicious. Looking at the menu, we found a number of items we'll be back to try in the near future.
Our experience at Cafe 128 was different than we anticipated (in a very good way). The atmosphere is charming, and slightly offbeat. The food is well prepared and uttterly delicious. We will return there again, and again.
This was our first visit to 128 Cafe, but it certainly won't be our last. The service was great, and all four of us agreed that the food was delicious!
Went here for NYE & there was a fixed menu that consisted of a champagne toast and a very small trout appetizer (about the size of a cookie per person), another small starter, a good sized entree, & a dessert for $59 per person. For an additional $15 per person, you got wine pairings with every course (3 glasses of wine). Some restaurants will have a meat option & a vegetarian option & you cannot mix & match courses. I don't like that. The 129 Cafe had 4 options for each course & you could mix and match. The ambiance was great, I've always thought that & the food, except for the dessert, was good. Not fantastic but really good. This was a great place for NYE b/c it wasn't too busy & it was romantic. I really liked the waitstaff. They were very pleasant & had great personality. I really like the quaint decor and the artwork in the restaurant. It has a very MN feel. What wasn't great: the portions were very disproportionate; the entrees were maybe too big & the starters were tiny - like samples, basically. The desserts were nothing to write home about. There was an Earl Grey lemon cake which sounded really good but was dry & small. Another option for dessert was Izzy's vanilla bean ice cream & they did nothing to fancy it up. It was just a couple scoops of ice cream in a bowl. Dessert was supposed to come with dessert wine but they had ran out so they offered us port. We tried it & decided we really don't like port so we asked if we could just have coffee. They made some coffee & it was very watery. My husband called it "church basement" coffee. I think they should have knocked off $5 per meal since they didn't have the dessert wine but they didn't offer that. The meal ended up being $189 after the tip which felt like a lot for what we ended up having. Although, like I said before, the location is great for NYE, I don't know if I would go back when they do these fixed menus again. I've been there for their regular menu and been much happier. Great brunch, too!
