About 1 or 8

The cuisine at 1 OR 8 is a reflection of the chef and owner's eclectic food experience growing up in Japan, where traditional dishes coexist with those originating from around the world often transformed with a Japanese touch. 1 OR 8 takes this approach, sometimes playfully pushing the envelope and experimenting with ingredients or techniques but always with a Japanese sensibility at heart.

Food was excellent - we enjoyed our meal very much. The portions are a little on the smaller side, but the quality more than makes up for it.

This may be the best Japanese restaurant in the city. The menu changes seasonally and the raw fish offerings are amazingly fresh and many options are flown in from Japan. The chef is super creative and his offerings are reminiscent of the type of modern Japanese cuisine you find in Tokyo. At the same time if you want more traditional Japanese offerings that's available too. We have dined there for years and unlike so many places where quality declines and the menu gets tired 1 or 8 is constantly improving and innovating. You won't be disappointed.

New menu is awesome. The chef fuses French cooking with traditional Japanese dishes. Not your typical sushi bar, but you can still order rolls if you want. The crudo dishes are the stars of the show. Unique flavor pairings with perfect cuts of sashimi. Great cocktails and sake selection. Also has awesome bar snack food if just want to have drink at front bar. Neighborhood favorite!

This place is WTF good. The food was spectacular, If you're a foodie it's a must try. The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly welcoming. The Chef clearly takes great pride in his craft. I will definitely be back.

This place serves some of the best sushi in NYC. The food is overall phenomenal. They make their own tofu, so the miso soup is superb. Also, their edamame rocks. Service can be a bit slow but waiters are always extremely nice. Ambiance is very nice.

This is one of my FAVORITE spots in Brooklyn. It's such a beautiful room matching the beautiful food presentation and lovely service. The ONLY thing I would say is that I wish the lights were 20% dimmer for added romance.

Second time here and it was a great one! We were seated right away, and sat at a great table in the middle section. Sake was awesome, and of course the fish is where it's at! Note: there is a new menu, and the omakase sushi was not available, just sashimi. Not a problem for me, but do note that their menu changes. Making your own hand rolls was a lot of fun! Will be back again!

The menu has changed quiet a bit here. It was still lovely but not what we were expecting going in. Supposedly their sushi chef left and out of respect to him they decided to not hire a new one. Seems a bit crazy if you ask me. We were really looking forward to sushi and had crudo instead that was lovely then a make your own hand roll experience. Not the same but good.

Been going here for years and while the menu changes it's always consistently great. And don't go by the menu alone- even simply named items like 'Squid' turn out to be very creative and awesome.

This restaurant is big, open and airy. The food is delicious but a bit on the avant garde side. We had high hopes for the tasting menu but once we saw it, it did not appeal. So my husband and I shared several small apps. I had the chirashi for the main course; he had a few DIY hand rolls.
We live in NYC and are used to paying $$$ for good food but the prices seemed ridiculous for the portion sizes here, which is why I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. I was still hungry afterwards and our bill was $240.

The food was absolutely fresh and tasty, except for being so pricy for such small portion size (less than a bite). What's more, we wait for about an hour before our nigiri was served. Also we were told they didn't offer sushi when we were there, which was the reason why we came. Besides the pre-fixed courses, they only have nigiri with special sauces and handrolls ingredients so that you could make your own hand roll. The food itself was tasty, it was the size and the options that didn't satisfy us. We were there for a friend get-together but we spent about $65 per person and left with a still hungry stomach.

If you can't get to Tokyo any time soon visit One or Eight. The chef showcases the essence of modern Japan which maintains one chopstick in traditional Japan and one in cutting edge 21st century cuisine. The food is exquisite, the service friendly and knowledgeable, and the setting Zen meets Williamsburg.

Very good sushi, amazing entreés, the hot crab is outstanding.
The service not so good, the waitress was ia a bad mood, almost as if she was doing us a big favor. We kept making the orders separated, and it seemed to annoy her.
Overall very nice place, drinks and food.

We enjoyed the composed dishes much much more than the nigiri. They whip out some special things, but it seems more of a Japanese fusion restaurant than a place to get great sushi. Delicious nonetheless!

Had a great meal at 1 or 8 recently BUT I felt mislead by the server and ultimately overcharged $50 although I begrudgingly paid and never said anything. The server knew it was my first time there and after I ordered a few drinks and appetizers, I ordered the sushi omakase for myself and my wife ordered a few sushi rolls separately. The waitress asked if we wanted two plates for the omakase (we both heard "for" but maybe it was "of"). Now, I thought she meant a second plate to share, not a second order costing an extra $50. And after appetizers and my wife ordering rolls for herself, I think a good server would suggest maybe that's too much food or clarify that was our intention at a minimum. When it came out, I figured they just split the order in two since it was not a whole lot of sushi for $50. Yes, it was great quality and price isn't all about quantity but it was perfectly reasonable for my wife and I to assume that was one plate split in two.

Its a shame because I thought everything else was great. I'd go again but not get the omakase dish. I was underwhelmed but maybe because I paid double.

I went here because of the superlative Zagat review. I've been trying to find a sushi restaurant in Brooklyn that can at the very least match the quality found in Manhattan. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. My date and I each ordered the $50 sashimi omakase (a mistake). The chef selections were uninspired and the fish was fishy and unpleasant. I did not enjoy a single piece (an extreme rarity for me). After a bottle of sake (a medium priced one) and tip the bill was well north of $200. I consider this to be a major rip off. The first warning sign should have been how easy it was to get a reservation and then how empty it was once we arrived. Take a car service over the bridge to Tomoe, stand in line briefly, and have a great meal for so much less.

The sushi was amazingly fresh. I had daily special, lobster, which was cooked to perfection. The ambiance was peaceful and stark at the same time. Very white. Booths set up for privacy, even though they are central to the room. Very clever design. Although we didn't partake, the bar at the front of the restaurant also seemed very hip.
