  • "our table as if she knew who we were. We were first time visitors. This was on a Friday night and we made the reservation 30 minutes before the scheduled time."

  • "My husband and I discovered this restaurant strolling around Berkeley on our way into SF for an anniversary weekend. Had a wonderful late breakfast at the bar. Great food, good vibe. Came back for lunch with our kid and the grandparents."

  • "My husband and I eat at Zut every couple of months, and always enjoy ourselves. The cocktails are excellent, and we each have our favorite dishes: my husband loves the crispy smelt, which were unusually delicious this time--plump and fresh-tasking, and his sole is perfect every time. I love the beet salad with its punch of fresh mint, as well as the mezze platter. And the service was outstanding--attentive but not rushed. We had a lovely table for two near the window, separated from other tables, so were able to enjoy pleasant dinner conversation."

  • "With the exception of the noise level and smaller than expected food portions, I can highly recommend ZUT! A previous reviewer had noted the excessive noise level and they were right. After walking around the restaurant, it was clear that noise level is bad through out the restaurant. Food portions are on the small side. Appetizers, Starters though, can be shared by 2 and leave plenty of room for the Entree. Our entrees were small, about the size of the starters. One will not have any left-overs. Staff is very accommodating and when our pizza was returned for blackened/ too burnt crust, a soup was offered while another pizza was prepared. Lovely interior and great outdoor space as well. Next time, we will dine outdoors."

  • "We have been there many times and we can rely on good food and good service unlike Cafe Rouge down the street."

  • "I met a friend for dinner at Zut as it is located half way between our homes. This was my first visit to the restaurant, which I so enjoyed, I returned the following week to take a house guest there for dinner. Ample parking, charming setting on 4th Street, excellent food and service, has made Zut a "frequent flyer" for me. I have yet to try their wine or bar as my companions were non drinkers; however, I will go there with friends who do enjoy wine and spirits on Sunday."

  • "A group of co-workers and I met at this restaurant for dinner. We enjoyed the food and the people watching. My boss was also impressed that he could find an Italian dessert wine on the extended wine list. He was very impressed. The only issue with the restaurant is it does get a little noisy when near capacity making it a little difficult to have conversations across the table."

  • "It's a totally delightful place. The wine was tasty, the lamb meatball appetizer divine and the atmosphere was warm and lovely. Good place for old friends to break bread together and catch up on life."

  • "Having read good reviews and being familiar with the space, I held high hopes for Zut. Unfortunately they were dashed by the people working the front end. Granted, the restaurant was busy during a Sunday brunch, however, restaurants look forward to being busy. Isn't that the point? One got the distinct impression not so much that people didn't care, because it was clear that they do, but that they weren't trained to provide a consistency of quality attention, or any attention at all. The food arrived barely warm, although it was very good. In sum, the rooms and entire package set a high expectation of an elegant, well considered dining experience. We could have just as easily been in a coffee shop and received better attention."

  • "I had brunch there with a couple friends over the weekend. The food was good but the noise level was unbearable. I've been to a lot of loud restaurants but this was unbearable. It actually hurt our ears. Management needs to install some type of insulation or fabric coverings or something to absorb the noise. I would not go back unless it was a nice day and I could sit outside."

  • "Four of us dined together, each trying a different main course. I had a halibut dish (not the one that appears on the online menu), which was among the most delicious preparations of halibut I can recall – baked exactly until done but not overdone with an wonderful balance of flavors. My companions all said their choices too were excellent. The servings are generous. We barely had room for dessert so we ordered just two. The chocolate budino cake with a side of peanut butter ice cream was rich and most delicious, especially if you're a chocolate lover. A word of warning: I left a bit stuffed because the quality of the food I ordered was such that I didn't want to stop eating even after I was full."

  • "We were a party of three for dinner. The atmosphere is lively. However, the ervice was slow--it took a half hour for drinks to arrive. Over the last year or so, we find that the food and wine quality has declined. The portions are quite small for the price, especially the halibut. The french fries were soggy and greasy. We think this lovely restaurant needs a new chef."

  • "While the location is perfect, the food is good but not great, and the ambiance is way too noisy, busy which made the service a bit spotty."

  • "While they have an eclectic menu the meze platter was terrific"

  • "My husband and I met friends and food-wise can comment on a few things. Appetizers - brussell sprouts were tasty; the frisée with smoked trout earn a "why bother". Pizza with sausage and egg was great; the halibut was disappointing. Tiny and dry. Blood orange sorbet v. good. It took a long time for our server to come to us, and the whole experience was a bit too long at 2 hours. We were tired from having to shout across the table. We only would order pizza in the future."

  • "We have eaten lunch at Zut 4 or 5 times over the last couple of years . The other night we had dinner for the first time. Dinner was excellent. The cauliflower soup is extremely good. All our lunches have been great and the wait staff has always been great."

  • "We went to a late Sat. brunch before a trip to Berkeley Rep. Place was jammed but we had a table for six a bit away from the noise. Service was excellent. Excellent menu for brunch/lunch. We ordered omelettes, a pizza, ahi tuna nicoise, and chicken salad wraps. Everyone was happy! And this a tough crowd! Nice Austrian white wine! Would definitely go back again."

  • "Great lively spot for lunch or late brunch. Wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable, efficient and on top of their game. Interesting choices in ingredients -- certainly not your basic cafe fare. Nicely decorated. The tables are a bit close (almost a bistro feel) but everybody seems to be friendly and having a great time. This place is very popular, as it always seems to be crowded -- and noisy? Wow! This is not the spot for a romantic meal, but great for eating with friends. And if you like biegnets (sp?? you know, Louisiana deep-fried thingies --powdered sugar on top? YUM!), that's a specialty here with jam on the side. Other interesting, tasty deserts as well. Very fun place. Reservation recommended -- VERY busy!"

  • "If you want a place that has outstanding service and friendly staff, with mouth-watering and delicious items on the menu, and bartenders that know how to make a proper cocktail, then ZUT! is your place!"

  • "Too noisy to converse in the main dining room. Quieter in the bar and outside, but it's usually too chilly outside"
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "This place has great tasting food and can be fairly pricey. We've gone a couple times and the service has been ok. Seems like we had to wait a bit before being asked if we wanted anything to drink. Great environment on a lazy Sunday to sit outside and people watch."

  • "Never a bad meal comes out of the kitchen. The only contingent might be price point to portion size, but the richness of each dish tends to be more filling than you might perceive. The pizza is fabulous and don't pass up the brussel sprouts!"

  • "All four of us were first-time patrons of Zut and we were all very pleased with the food and the service. We had expected quality food but what we experienced exceeded that expectation -- the food was great. The server listened to us and made sure we got our meal and got out of the restaurant in time to get on to the theater. She was also great about explaining the dishes on the menu and the drinks. All in all a great time for us."

  • "A group of us met there to continue a business discussion and it was a perfect place for lunch/late breakfast. It was little noisy, but it didn't deter us. The service was friendly, unrushed, and very attentive. We ordered from every part of the menu, and the food was a delight - breakfast, lunch, salads were all delicious. It was a perfect middle of the day meal and Fourth Street is so welcoming."

  • "We visit Zut every 2-3 months. Great bar (they have Chopin vodka for the gluten-free crowd, plus fantastic regular drinks), nice atmosphere, attentive service and a fabulous rotisserie chicken with a smoky flavor. We gave them a try for their pre-fixe menu on Valentine's Day, and with Eddie Pasternak playing live jazz the atmosphere was upbeat and lively. We ventured into new territory with the pre fixe menu offerings, and weren't disappointed. Just a little hiccup with the service--ordered our drinks at the same time as the dinner, and the soup and salad arrived long before the drinks and bread. Had to ask for coffee and refills. Just too busy I guess. Also, a restaurant of this caliber ought to be offering a gluten free bread alternative."

  • "I've dined at Zut 8 times now (7 Diner, 1 lunch), ordered different mains each time and not once have I been disappointed. I do have my favorites: for starters the fried brussels sprouts and the crispy smelts are a must - tart and full of flavor they are perfect starter to get the taste buds ready. The roasted beet salad is clean & fresh and the perfect "Intermezzo" before the main dish. The halibut with clams, Zut Burger, rotisserie chicken, the ribeye - all to be enjoyed. Don't forget their great original cocktails! The staff are attentive, not intrusive or pushy, they don't "hover". The offerings are fresh, original (IMO) and so far each has had a balance that suited my pallet to a T. Highly recommended."

  • "Took my daughter for dinner as a special occasion, but got seated next to a loud woman, unfortunately. Waiters made 2 mistakes with our food coming out and brought wrong salad and wrong food to our table. Was not very impressed, especially with the prices. Salad was standard and pepperoni pizza was very spicy. Special housemade soda was about the best thing."

  • "There's a group of us that have our birthdays around the same time - and we go out for an afternoon adventure followed by dinner every year. Normally the restaurant is chosen based on where we're having our adventure - but next year, we might just need to center our afternoon on being close to Zut. This place has it down: warm reception, patient and knowledgeable server - friendly but not in your face. She clearly knew the food, portions and timing to a nearly intuitive level. The food was yummy and certainly matched the descriptions on the menu and from the server. The only exception was the roasted chicken: dry white meat and overly salty - but certainly not so bad that our party didn't chow down on it. Have the Maltese cocktail."

  • "Zut! Is usually my go-to lunch spot when I'm shopping on 4th Street. I tried out dinner and was delighted to find many of the same items on the dinner list. The grapefruit, beet, avocado salad is delightful!"

  • "I've been to Zut at lunch and enjoyed it, but at dinner, the roar of noise was so high we couldn't talk--the experience was miserable. We had to shout at each other, and still couldn't hear. I would not return for dinner."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "Special salad with beets and potatoes had too large lettuce, not enough of other ingredients and too lightly dressed. I favor California cuisine and lightly dressed salads but this was too much like just a bowl of lettuce instead of a wonderful hearty winter salad. My friend's pizza was quite greasy and also disappointing."
    Dined on 2/2/2014
  • "We tried Zut! when they opened and were unimpressed. Thought we'd give it another go, but were still unimpressed. Had a tuna nicoise which was just lettuce, four slices of tuna, beets and a hard boiled egg. There was too much dressing and the flavors weren't exciting. My friend had a vegetable salad which was also very ordinary."

  • "My college bud and I always convene at least once/year for a meal @Zut. She works very nearby. We met the other night and the bartender couldn't have been nicer (no surprise) but the wine she ordered (Zin) and the wine I ordered (Rhone blend) were completely unexciting. When we were seated, we ordered brussels to share, beet salad to share, and bleu cheese pizza to share. The brussels were a bit over-blackened, not bad, but definitely "over," the beet salad was DIVINE, and the bleu cheese pizza was lovely except a bit limp (read: soggy). Hoping for better results next time. Service was lovely."
