Zuni CafeThe must have chicken dishAlways consistent. The best chicken and Caesar salad!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently amazing foodI've eaten at Zuni since it opened and never had a bad meal - not even close. From the freshest oysters to standbys (Caesar , burger, chicken and piazzas) to daily specials everything is fresh, light and wonderful. The food is Californian with a southern France/northern Italy influences. The service is superb without being cloying and outdoor light and windows are reminiscent of Paris. Great, creative wine list too. Enjoy!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMLove Zuni! There's a reason this SF institution has been around for such a long time. One of our favorite places for an elegant lunch or dinner. Always a great selection on the raw bar, and along with one of their burger's that's MY idea of surf and turf.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways great...Zuni never disappoints.....consistently great food and great service.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AM2 vegans and 2 omnivores walk into:We needed to choose a lunch spot where two vegans and two omnivores could enjoy an afternoon lunch and catch up on life's rich pageantry. Zuni was the perfect spot. The server was totally amenable to requesting the kitchen put together vegan salads and entree plates for us. The Bandol Rose was perfect to go with the delicious vegetables cooked numerous ways and the juicy delectable burgers our fiends enjoyed. Apricot sorbet with roasted cherries made the perfect vegan dessert. The convivial atmosphere is one of Zuni's greatest assets. Looking forward to visiting againsoon!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMBartender was accommodatingBartender was accommodating and creative. Oysters were fresh and delicious. The bread was addicting. Good service, lovely spot for lunch.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMNicole and Guillermo wereNicole and Guillermo were amazing!
They were both friendly and attentive. My wife and I spilt 3 courses and the food was delicious and affordable. The chicken was better than advertised.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMZuni ReviewHad dinner on a Friday night and was seated in a small room with a window and lots of light. It was perfect for the 4 of us. We all enjoyed our meal except our friend who had the pasta. She said it was a bit bland. We had the chicken and it was very good. Other friend had the steak which was good, but a small portion. In fact some of the apps we had were on the small side for the price. That was the biggest complaint from all of us. Certainly the chicken for 2 was plentiful. The waitress was very good indeed.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMIncredible OystersThe food and service place this restaurant among the 100 best in San Francisco, but the variety and quality of
oysters make it special.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMRoast chicken is a must tryNow I understand why Zuni Cafe's roast chicken is beloved -- succulent and tasty with the accompanying bread salad. Loved the shoestring potatoes, Caesar salad, and gateau victoire as well. One can't seem to go wrong with whatever they order on the menu. Restaurant has a lot of natural light, lovely on a nice sunny day.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMPure HeavenOn average, I go here twice a month and still can't get enough. The Zuni chicken is hands down the best chicken I've ever had!5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMWe are always happy when weWe are always happy when we can land a weekend reservation for Zuni. The food is consistently good. If there are four us, the chicken for two is a must. Prep can't be beat! Thanks.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMA Place For Good FoodI went to Zuni for a late lunch and ate a great hamburger. Be sure to order the shoestring fries!5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Chicken! That chicken was so frickin' delicious. It has ruined the memory of all roast chickens that I've previously had and thought were delicious. The service from our waitress, Jessica, was stellar. We will be back!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent chicken and CaesarExcellent chicken and Caesar salad. It was our first time there and would go again but I'd ask to be seated downstairs where it's cooler.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMStill Great!Zuni Cafe is a San Francisco landmark restaurant. Yet, even after more than 20 years, the food is still inventive and creative. Fantastic place to dine!5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceWe enjoyed our food and wine at Zuni's. The server and hostess did a good job. We had the chicken with the bread salad for two and enjoyed. It was plenty for two. Next time would like to try something differenc5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic dish! The chicken for two (to share) is a must! The most amazing dish! So yummy!5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMChicken with bread salad isChicken with bread salad is a must. Oysters were also delicious!5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperlatives fail me.Excellent food, very professional service. The bartender made a pisco sour starting with an egg white, not a mix. My wife called the tuna the best fish she'd ever had.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMBest in SFBeen my fav restaurant in sf for years. Was disappointed that on my last visit, food was not well timed at all; our entree came out cold; didn't say anything to the server as he was clearly overwhelmed by a large party that came in during our meal. This was really , noticeable because the 30+ experiences ve had at zuni are never anything short of impeccable. Hopefully just a one-off and not a sign of anything declining.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDid not disappoint! This was our second trip there, while in SF for a conference. The Roast chicken is devine & well worth the wait, but order it immediately! Even tho' we did, it took over an hour to be served the chicken. Being resourceful, we filled the time with cocktails, wine and fabulous Oysters...mmmm. The bread served is excellent-one can taste the actual whole grains that are in the flour used to bake the bread. Complete the Chicken meal with the shoe string potatoes and you will not be disappointed.
The chicken meal is sufficient for three people, if having appetizers.
Once again, our only regret is that this restaurant is not in the Boston area.
Word of advice, if cab needed for transport home-have them call one-difficult to flag down in area....5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMRoast chicken lives up to the hype! The chicken was enough to feed my husband and I twice (we had the leftovers for dinner two nights later). The appetizers were tasty (rabbit w/black beans and fava beans a la plancha) as was the Caesar salad. Flourless chocolate cake was truly one of the "airiest" we've ever had and the strawberry sorbet was also delicious, not too sweet, perfectly tart. Our server Jessica was quite good and she was supported by an attentive busboy staff. Only downsides are: this place can be quite loud (try to sit upstairs) and the bathroom situation is inadequate (1 toilet for guys, 1 for girls) given the size of the restaurant and the number of patrons at the bar.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat as ever!Moved out of the city after 32 years of great Zuni meals. Two years later it is as good as ever -
Gnochi - the best anywhere hands down.
Ceasar and shoestring potatoes - better than life itself.
Espresso granita - a little smaller and less attractive but the same great flavor.
Zuni rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMBest chicken ever!!So worth the hour wait to prepare it!
Everything was so delicious from salad to
That roast chicken to great dessert. Our server
Was a true professional!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAn Off Day in the Kitchen?Let me start by saying that we love Zuni and Mother's Day may not be the best day to review a restaurant, but this time the pizza arrived with a soggy crust and seemed, overall, rather bland. The oysters, in contrast, were fresh and flavorful as always and the other dishes were just fine. Desserts were superb! This one glitch will in no way deter us from going back as often as possible.
As always the service was superb and when we arrived our table was waiting as were the flowers we had ordered.
Thanks to the staff!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother great time at ZuniZuni has been one of my favorite places for years, and I try to get there whenever I am in San Francisco. It's my place for oysters and the signature chicken with bread salad is well worth the wait. Enjoy a couple of the aperol cocktails and conversation with your date over appetizers while it roasts. Our dinner last Sunday was made even more outstanding by the incredibly warm and smart service from Kristen, our charming server. Thank you, Kristen!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways Fabulous!Went to Zuni for my birthday and, as usual was impressed. We got there for lunch and were seated by a window upstairs where it was quiet and we could have a conversation. The service was excellent. We had fairly normal lunch of Cesar Salad, Burger and Fries but, the quality of those items was superb. Zuni is always a place you can count on for a wonderful meal. It's also quintessential San Francisco!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food before a Performance. My friend and I ate here for lunch before seeing a matinee ballet at the Opera house. I had been here before many years ago and I was not disappointed. The food and service were wonderful,5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways great! As usual, Zuni was great. Had soup and their fantastic Caesar salad for lunch with a friend. Fantastic!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways a great mealI have been going to Zuni periodically over the last 30 years and have enjoyed every meal I have had there. (If I lived in SF I would be a regular.) This Sunday brunch was no exception. SImple salad with just the right amount of dressing, perfectly poached egg, tasty sausage, crispy and chewy pizza crust. Service was attentive. A very satisfying meal and plenty of time to walk to the opera house for a matinee performance.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat chickenThe chicken under a brick is worth the wait. The bread salad that comes with it was delicious. Great service.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMMust-be PlaceWe visited ZUNI Cafe during our holiday in SF. It's a absolutely must-be place in town. Great food, good wine list and very friendly service.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMMy wife said we had to haveMy wife said we had to have the roast chicken. No one told me, until after we ordered, it would take an hour. No problem. It was absolutely outstanding and the bread salad with it exquisite. Plus I got to watch all the wonderful food items going to the other tables while enjoying my first glass of wine and delicious Caesar salad. Next time I'm gonna get oysters and champagne. Or one of those big piles of shoestring potatoes.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were lucky to get a lastWe were lucky to get a last minute reservation on Sat. night. Zuni continues to impress. We were seated right away and service throughout the night was consistent, if a little slow. The food was excellent. I went for the benchmark caesar salad and roast chicken. Others also ordered and loved the steak. The wine list has a nice range from inexpensive to special occasion. Always love this place.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMPatricia Unterman said itPatricia Unterman said it -- Zuni is San Francisco's living room. You'll see everybody, and everybody is comfortable. And the chicken is worth the wait.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHasn't changed in 20 years.Hasn't changed in 20 years. Excellent fish, gnocchi, Caesar salad, oysters.
I could eat here once a week!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMZuni is always my first choiceZuni is always my first choice if I am in that part of the city.
You can count on them for consistency and quality.
Their thoughtful - ethical practices of local purchasing - support, are meaningful.
Proud and fortunate to have them in our extraordinary Bay Area!4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMZuni is famous for roast chicken.Zuni is famous for roast chicken.
You wait an hour--chatting over oysters, salad, wine--then you're served a succulent chicken, crispy skin, perfect seasonings, bread dipped in drippings then crisped, tasty greens...
Now you know why.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMCame in from out of town andCame in from out of town and picked Zuni for my birthday dinner based on reviews; was not disappointed. We arrived 15 minutes late but they had held our table-very much appreciated on a busy night. The building and seating on two levels is interesting and the art eclectic. Each item we ordered was well executed and memorable.
My only caution would be that some of the seating is "bench" style without back support; I was happy withva banquet seat against a low wall but I know I would have been unhappy holding myself up all night.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMFresh, great food and excellent,Fresh, great food and excellent, attentive service. Loved the atmosphere.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMStill the best "to order"Still the best "to order" roast chicken anywhere -- worth waiting for!4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, we had a lovelyAs always, we had a lovely dinner and night.
We had special guests and the food was spectacular!
Thank you! Our waitress was tops (sorry forgot her name)
and what else can I say! The table upstairs was grand.
I love Zuni!!!!!!!! We have been to your restaurant many, many
times, and I am so impressed that you can keep up the quality
time after time.
We appreciate the hard work it takes. Thank you again!4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFull of light and with perfectFull of light and with perfect food. Coffee granita dessert at brunch was spectacular.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThe server initially startedThe server initially started to seat us at a two-top in a tiny room with two large parties. One of the chairs actually extended into the doorway, which did not bode well. It was hot, airless, and noisy--not at all the sort of atmosphere I was expecting with a place of Zuni Cafe's reputation.
Fortunately, our server reseated us in a slightly less hot, much less crowded room by an open window, for which we were grateful. But I don't know why they would seat anybody at that first table. Getting a table in a popular restaurant is always difficult, but the table you finally get shouldn't feel like a punishment.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Roast Chicken for TwoThe Roast Chicken for Two certainly lived up to all the hype! Frankly, I was amazed. My husband makes a fantastic roast chicken, so how could it be better? But it was -- we both agreed. It was a wonderful meal that was well worth making the reservation weeks in advance.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWas disappointed in the serviceWas disappointed in the service this time, which is unusual for Zuni. Took way too long to get drink refills, the entrees came out way too fast (we had just received our appetizer minutes before), and my friend's burger came without the ordered mushrooms. It then took very long to get someone's attention and get the mushrooms, which were still included as an extra charge on our check. Not a huge charge or anything, but usually when Zuni makes a mistake like that, they tend to offer a free dessert and/or remove the charge for the mistake. Food was great, but service was not up to the regular Zuni standards. Hope it improves next time.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThe chicken dinner was excellent. The chicken dinner was excellent. Our server sggested the Atlantic oysters which we thought was odd so we ordered Atlantic and Pacific...she was right! The Atlantic oysters were superb. It was just sooo noisy, and we were UPTAIRS. But the food was so very good!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMChicken with bread salad,Chicken with bread salad, their signature dish, was out of this world.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWe throughly enjoyed our mealWe throughly enjoyed our meal at Zuni Cafe. The chicken lived up to its reputation and seeking out the restaurant was well worth the effort. However, the restaurant is very loud. So much so that it's impossible to have a conversation with the person across the table. To make matters worse there's pianist playing downstairs and although I was seated in the balcony above him I couldn't tell you anything about the music that he played. I complained about the excessive sound level to a waiter who agreed and said it was the loudest restaurant he'd ever worked in.
A restaurant does not need to be a temple of silence, but it is supposed to be a place where one can have a conversation.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
