Diner Reviews
  • "I always love this spot and it never let's me down. The chicken for 2 is spot on! My favorite restaurant in SF"

  • "I've eaten at Zuni's three other times and each time has been fabulous. They are able to maintain the great calibre of food and impeccable service that keeps people coming back. They have enough variations in seasonal changes in their menu to keep it interesting and are astute enough not to tamper with some of the tried and true favorites that have made them an icon."

  • "I had heard so many good things for do many years about Zuni Cafe. We were treating friends from Miami who had never been to CA before. We all commented that "nouvelle cuisine" went out with the '80's; the dishes were truly microscopic, but outrageously expensive for the small amount. My friends were still hungry after 3 mini scallops each, do we ordered frisée salads - which looked like a 4" tumble weed. Won't be back for the food, just the ambiance."

  • "My group went to try their Caesar Salad that was written up as the best in the nation. Everything was fantastic and the Caesar Salad lived up to the hoopla. All the food was fantastic, I wish I could have tried everything. Will definitely return"

  • "I brought another friend here for his birthday on Sunday for lunch and we both fully enjoyed the whole experience. Our waitress was very attentive but not intrusive. The oysters (his first time) were fresh and tasted of the sea, just as they should. The Caesar salad is one of the best in town. My friend found the shoestring fries exactly to his liking and the chicken with Tuscan bread salad is one of the best dishes in the Bay Area. Another superlative dining experience! Thank you, Zuni! We miss Judy Rodgers so much! Thanks for keeping her legacy going and perfect!"

  • "I hadn't been here for ten years. It was perfect. Delicious food. I had their classic Caesar salad and the hamburger with tomatoes, cheese and grilled onions. The hamburger was a bit small, but the best taste I may ever have had. Very skimpy on the cheese, but still yummy. A grown man would need two at least. Had a bloody mary, well made. We ate outdoors to accommodate our dog; very peaceful at 11:30 am. Only quibble: I was told that they didn't reserve outdoor tables and they do, but I got there at 11 and snagged one."

  • "We always enjoy Zuni. It must have been an off night this time. We made a reservation request that was overlooked and the service was not as attentive as we are used to. Our server forgot a few details that we asked for at the table which ended up being a buzz kill to the overall experience. Our halibut and steak were delicious. The cucumber soup was very good although I would have simplified it a bit."

  • "I've eaten at Zuni for dinner several times but this was my first time for brunch. The space was beautiful, light, and airy during the day. Our service was great and the food timeless as always. We enjoyed an assortment of oysters to start, followed by the scrambled eggs, which had an incredibly delightful texture (creamy and pillowy?). We got the burger and a caesar salad to split as well, and ended with affogato. Everything was great. A perfectly executed brunch!"

  • "I bring all my out-of-town guests here. The chicken is amazing, wine selection is good, and their Zune Summer Punch is excellent. It's also in a good neighborhood to hang out before/after dinner."

  • "Unwilling to wait an hour for the celebrated roast chicken, we had an excellent Caesar's Salad, hamburger, and paprika sausage. Only the highly-praised polenta didn't quite do it for us. Wine list os excellent. Service was brisk and efficient, but on the cold side. The interior layout was interesting and varied, but not every table is equally appealing. We were given one in what appeared to be quite a good section, but one of us had to stare at a red brick wall. Interior design was clean and appealing, compromised by poorly chosen paintings. A mixed experience, but tending towards the positive."

  • "Had a fabulous late lunch here - we were seated in a great table by the window on the 2nd floor and ordered 3 courses plus dessert, wine and coffee - a nice afternoon breeze was coming in and we watched the world go by while eating and drinking wine! The food was unbelievable - we split the kale soup and Caesar salad and without even asking they split it onto individual plates - now that's great service! Then we had 2 separate entrees and 2 separate desserts (naturally!) followed by an espresso and latte. The waiter was very attentive and efficient and we were impressed because he was taking care of several tables. This is definitely one of those restaurants that you come back to again and again!"

  • "Zuni Cafe is a great place for food and is very energetic. Service is excellent and people all around just seem to be having a good time. We love the buzz of the bar!!! We are of the more mature generation but still find this restaurant to to exhibit the charm and excitement of San Francisco."

  • "I was the nightmare customer running very late and creating problems with a reservation as part of a large group. However, the hostess was very gracious in sorting out a solution. Don't think many busy restaurants would have been so accomodating and we were all very appreciative of the staff's professionalism. This is yet another reason why Zuni continues to be such a highly regarded SF dining destination."

  • "There are so many great restaurants in SF! This would be one of them! First time after hearing and reading about the restaurants history. Everything was great. Caesar was out of this world , salmon was fantastic too. Have to go back for the chicken when we have more time. Nice setting, nice city vibe. We had a great table. Cool staff and cool patrons! And I never say stuff like that !!"

  • "Found the service a little slow- asked for pepper and was almost finished with dish before it was brought. Ordered a second drink- had almost finished my entree before it came."

  • "We got "the chicken." It was great. Our table butted up against another table, so it almost felt like a table for 5 instead of the lunch for 2 that I had planned. Great service staff."

  • "Great food - nice ambience - small warren of rooms so where we were felt very intimate even though the restaurant wass quite big. Service was pretty accomodating. Loved it!"

  • "Wife and I had a great meal at Zuni the other night. Our waiter was awesome, we ordered really well, the food was outstanding (even better than what I have experienced in past visits to Zuni). Super accommodating about splitting dishes. This is quickly becoming my go-to restaurant for special occasions"

  • "I'm being a somewhat harsh critic in my review of Zuni because I just really didn't feel like it was worth the hype. The whole baked chicken was okay, but not all that special. The lobster mushroom risotto was pretty good, but the portion size was seriously tiny. The fried kale chips and mushrooms were pretty damned good - fried foods tend to be :) The cocktails were decent, but the cocktail menu itself was totally uninspired and boring. For a $13 cocktail I'm looking for something new and interesting. However, big thumbs up for the house-made pepper infused vodka - that was tasty and something I hadn't had before. I didn't explore the wine menu, but I was also disappointed with the very run of the mill beer selections available."

  • "What an amazing night we had here this week while visiting San Francisco from DC. Everything was delicious but the roasted chicken for two really was spectacular. Service was so nice - really like being at a friends house. So glad we ate here as one of only a handful of meals we had time for in the city."

  • "This was our first time at Zuni Cafe. It has been on my wife's list for a long time, and we had the opportunity to visit in the late afternoon for a drink and dinner. Really a delightful spot with big clean windows looking out at the vibrant hustle and bustle of the city. The cocktail was enjoyable as we unwound from a busy day. Upon being seated at an upstairs table with a white tablecloth we reviewed the menu and made some tough choices. I had the special, squab! Though I was teased by my wife, she really lit up after trying a bite, which I cautiously negotiated for a taste of her lamb! Wonderful food & presentation. Our waiter was excellent and provided us with answers to all our questions. Overall, the experience was fabulous!"

  • "I joined a business associate for lunch. We both agreed it was excellent. By far the best Ceasar Salad in the City. The service was spot on and the host station even had matches."

  • "I have been coming here for years, and never ordered the chicken until recently. Zuni did not disappoint - the chicken was outstanding; light and crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. The panzanella salad is also delicious with huge pieces of toasted bread. We also ordered several other small dishes to enjoy before the arrival of the bird: a few oysters, the Piccolo fritto, Montauk scallop ceviche, ricotta gnocchi, and Caesar salad. It was the perfect amount of food to share for 4 women, and still leave us hungry for the star of the meal. A particular standout was the gnocchi, which melted in my mouth and had an unimaginable lightness to it. And there was still room for butterscotch pot de creme at the end of the night!"

  • "The food was fresh and tasted heathy. The chicken is the well known dish and, for chicken, it as quite good. The clams with the rock cod were also delicious, as were the oysters, but the scallop appetizer was small and it all felt a bit overpriced for what it was."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "Always get the chicken. The ricotta gnocchi are like clouds. And if you're lucky to be there early or late - try the burger!"

  • "A simply horrible experience. Probably the worst meal of our lives - corn soup with no corn and too much chili oil (so much that it made us cough!), salmon that clearly had been sitting around, and a pork chop that was 1/3 meat and 2/3 fat - and I'm pretty sure pork isn't supposed to be as red as this was inside. A complete fail. Even worse? No official apology or accountability by the restaurant despite this feedback. There are SO many great restaurants in Hayes Valley, this is not one of them. The Zuni Cafe of the past is gone."

  • "I've been dining at Zuni since 1990. I haven't been since 2010. The food was good, not great like I remember. The service was less than remarkable, he was kind but not "on it". A dog that was at the next table snapped at a little girl at the table next to it. NOT GOOD."

  • "Only issue was with the service. The server disappeared during the meal. Then when he cleared the tables, he got oil on my friend's shirt."

  • "Have been coming to Zuni for the past 19 years ... usually a special occasion place so only once or twice a year. In general, almost everyone I go with loves the bread salad that comes with the chicken the best. It is divine! Unfortunately this time the salad was mostly just that BREAD and it was HARD ... probably because there was so little of the other ingredients such as the pine nuts and currents that enhance and soften and give it that wonderful flavor. Sad :("

  • "I took a friend here for lunch, and it could not have been a better experience. We sat next to a wall cut out and were able to look down onto the kitchen. The service was very good, and the chicken was amazing. I am not a stuffing lover, but I have not had anything like the stuffing came with the chicken. I could have eaten a whole plate of it."

  • "For many years, I'd been wanting to try Zuni on visits to San Francisco. Finally, I was able to do so. All 4 of us felt the food was extremely mediocre. One of us had been there a couple of times before and found it to be quite good. Something is just off...from the bread to the salads to the main courses, the food was OK to poor. The salad was the best part, but not terribly inventive, the bread uninteresting, the main course completely dried out for me and not interesting for any of us. We dared not risk dessert. All of us left very surprised and very disappointed."

  • "Zuni contiinues to be one of my favorite SF restaurants. The food is excellent and I always have to get the roasted chicken as it is so delicious. The appetizers were great also. Kudos to the team for keeping the restaurant so current."

  • "Excellent brick oven roasted chicken. But must order right away as it takes one hour to cook. Was seated near the brick oven so it was very warm. This was the only downside."

  • "Had to try the famous roasted chicken with bread salad. It was worth the wait and worth the money. It truly was the best chicken I have ever eaten. Yes, the restaurant is very overpriced but all in all the service was great, the food was fantastic and our son had a great meal from the leftovers!"
