Diner Reviews
  • "Our table was generally very impressed with the food, service, and overall experience. Because the kitchen was extremely busy at peak-dinner hour there was a long delay between the ordering and the appearance of the dinners. I personally ordered a cold and a hot small plate, and requested they be served in that order. The hot plate arrived first. This certainly made my enjoyment of the Tuna Crudo much less than it would have been. Overall it was a positive experience and we agreed we would all return on future occasions"

  • "The food is quite good and the service is attentive. We usually do the standard order there: pick a style of mussels; pick a flatbread; pick a salad and share them all. It is the perfect place to eat before walking across Washington Park to the opera or a concert at Music Hall. And they take reservations, so you can make sure you will be seated and out on time. Be aware that the noise level is pretty high - so it's not the best place if you want to talk. Some of our favorites are: mushroom flatbread, haricot vert salad, and salmon tartare. Also like the Washington Park cocktail - fresh raspberry and lime, but not too sweet. It's very refreshing."

  • "Mussels, flatbread, and tapas oh my! This is great OTR casual dining spot. When you are not necessarily looking for a full formal dinner, Zula really is a great spot. While they do have large plates and you could have a more traditional dinner, the ability to order small plates and a variety of mussels & flatbreads is what we love about this place. Two blocks off Vine, so not as crowded and larger than most OTR establishments so easier to get in. Kale salad, yellow curry mussels, and the tomato, basil, and balsamic flatbread were all three great. Great for causal dining with friends!"

  • "Food was excellent - gnocchi with lamb Bolognese, eggplant fries with a spicy dipping sauce, the risotto cake, plus excellent cold salmon dish and a lovely beet salad. The place is a bit loud, and the drink service a bit slow, but we had a great meal and will return."

  • "Imaginative, eclectic, menu with an excellent variety of small plates such as mini moussaka, salads and wonderful mussels. Delicious flatbreads that are an excellent dinner with a salad or appetizer. Wideranging selection of wines from across the world. Prices are reasonable for the excellent quality of food and wine."

  • "My wife and I were excited to try Zula as we had heard good things and enjoy eating out in OTR, but were disappointed. We tried 5 different items from the menu and the best was between ok & good. overall our dinner was fine, but with so many good options (Abigail Street, Bakersfield, Senate, etc) in OTR we will not be going back. The beet salad was not well balanced between greens, dressing, blue cheese and beets as the beets were way to overpowering. The gnocci in lamb ragu had too much sauce but was good. The fried rissoto had a great, very flavorful crust but the risotto in the middle was pretty bland. The bread and goat cheese flatbread were both very good."

  • "We had a great dinner with wonderful wines. The tables are close together and the place is loud but very vibrant. We would definitely go back."

  • "It was a lovely experience, service and food were top notch! Have been telling my co-workers and cycling class all about the flat-bread and tuna plate. I will be back!"

  • "This restaurant is a tapas type restaurant, although they do have a few regular type dishes. I really liked the idea of being able to sample several different types of food, and each sample I had was wonderful."

  • "One of your questions is "How was the noise level?" Only three choices are given: "Quiet...Moderate...Energetic..." What about DEAFENING" ???We were ushered into a room where high-chairs were set at tables ideally suited to the height of basketball players, so that my 5-foot-one wife could not dine with me and our equally-short friend. We asked for another table and had to wait for the onset of the Second Ice Age before a clueless hostess led us to a tight little table in Outer Siberia, right next to the door to the kitchen, where every time we turned to speak to each other we could see the very dirty kitchen floor. By the time we got our food we were so miserable we could barely eat. Will we return ever again? No, I don't think so."

  • "You'll be happy you came to Zula. The service was very attentive and quick, considering that every table in the place was packed. The plate sizes at Zula are you normal American tapa style sizes—not entree size but enough to share between three or four people. The mussels are what our group came for and they do not disappoint. The bread becomes a vehicle to gather up the remaining sauce once the mussels are gone."

  • "Dinner with friends before Cincinnati Opera's "Carmen" the other night. Excellent location near Music Hall, on the north end of Washington Park newly renovated. Food was fabulous, service was impeccable, We never felt rushed even though we had a 7:30 show. We had the classic steamed muscles. There must be a dozen variations on the menu and will try them all soon, but these will be hard to beat. Walleye was superb Worth the drive to Cincinnati."

  • " We had been somewhat deterred by the comments about how loud is but all so glad that we went to find out for ourselves. It is noisy but the noise level is vibrant and fun. We were still able to hold a conversation so that is what we wanted. The food is great. We had Thai Mussels and loved them; can't wait to go back and try some of the other mussels choices! We were entertaining a guest from Chicago and she is so impressed with the Cincinnati restaurant scene. It is fun to be able to show it off."

  • "We thought the restaurant was really overall great....but not sure I'd want to revisit, as it was so noisy! There were a few large lady groups the evening we were there...but its pretty noisy anyway!"

  • "The restaurant was hopping when we arrived on a Saturday evening at 5:45 before a music hall performance. The service was fast and friendly and the food was good. Plenty of options for beer and wine and sharing 3 light plates before the show followed by cappuccino and a gelato split between 2 of us was a perfect amount of food before sitting for a 3 hour performance of Carmen."

  • "We went for the first time after a referral from my daughter and it was fantastic. The food was so good that I want to go back again just for the taste of the foods. We tried several things and all were presented well and delicious. My personal favorite was the mussels fungi with a feta flatbread. It is very noisy in there, there is really nothing to soak up the noise so it just bounced around and is a little hard to have a conversation with someone unless you talk loud. The table we had was in an awkward location, crowded in a table for 2. Our waitress was very good and the service was amazing. I don't know how they can serve in such an orderly fashion with so much going on. I would highly recommend this place."

  • "I love the upbeat atmosphere, extensive wine and beer list, and fantastic food and service at Zula. It's great for a date night or dinner with friends. I highly recommend the fungi mussels or yellow curry. The flatbreads are wonderful too. Parking is easy too at Washington Square."

  • "The Curry Mussels are awesome and you have to get the raw tuna salad with the jalapenos. OMG the flavors are incredible. Enjoy!"

  • "We had a great tapas selection of mussles, flatbread, salmon toro (sp?), calimari, a really nice spicy risotto and some other dishes I cannot remember them all but what a great time ! Its a unique modern atmosphere with a nod to classic design. The service was excellent. We sat at a table near the big metal flatbread oven which the proprietor designed himself. The atmosphere is energetic and lively not formal or stuffy - I would not say its very quiet if you are looking for really intimate. It is also one of the only restaurants in that area that actually take reservations which is priceless when you are trying to make a show at Music Hall (just a block away). The area around Washington Park is destined to be a hotspot and so is Zula!"

  • "The first time we dined there, we couldn't wait to return! This time, we were seated in the back dining area, it was really hot back there and the food was not as good as I remembered. We could not wait to order the tuna appetizer again but this time, it was very off and very fishy. The waitress bantered back and forth with us as to why this could be instead of removing it from our bill. Flatbread was great but given the service and the fishy tuna, I will not be returning. "

  • "A friend and I went here before a concert at Music Hall. We shared three plates: the Beet salad, the Goat-cheese flatbread, and the Risotto. We each had a glass of wine as well. Every single item was delicious! Those three items were the perfect amount of food to feel full but not stuffed. The restaurant is on the small side, but completely do-able. We really enjoyed it, and I plan to return with my spouse in the future."

  • "Our table was not the greatest, a two top right outside the bathroom area, not very conducive to sharing multiple plates. Our waitress was fabulous, the cocktails were terrific and not the same old boring stuff. The mussels were outstanding and the calamari appetizer was a surprise winner! i would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family and we will definitely be back."

  • "I am not usually a fan of small plates, but this had a good blend. Acoustics amplified all conversation so be prepared for a really noisy meal on a weekend night."

  • "Its okay, but food and service don't compare well to the other dozen restaurants on nearby vine street"

  • "Small plates are such a great way to try several things on the menu, and that is exactly what they specialize in. The mussels (New Orleans style) and the flat bread pizza (goat cheese) were great. I'd also highly recommend the tuna crudo. Considering the three we picked were all wonderful, I bet it would be hard to go wrong here. Definitely recommend checking out this OTR restaurant, the buzz you hear about it is most definitely justified."

  • "i had made a reservation through open table, stating specifically in the special requests section that we needed separate checks. reservation was for 8 people. when i arrived, i mentioned this to the server. he said they recently changed their policy about separate checks. they would do 4 separate checks divided evenly. i asked for the manager, he said pretty much the same thing with an explanation as to why they have the new policy. i said it doesn't say it on your website and you could've canceled my reservation, called me or emailed me about this change. he said he didn't make the decision. i said who did, he said the owner, i said is the owner here, he said yes, i said i'd like to speak to them. We got separate checks."

  • "Believe the wait staff when they tell you their mussels and flatbreads are the house specialties! The mussels "bar" refers to the incredible array of preparations they offer for steamed mussels (no barbaric self-serve bar here), in which there is truly something for every taste. The salad offerings are generously portioned, with the baby romaine definitely being large enough for two. We will definitely go back for more!"

  • "Myself and 3 other people visited Zula on a Saturday night. It was packed but with a reservation we were seated immediately. The restaurant is tapas style and 5 dishes fed four people comfortably but we didn't feel like we ate too much. I would recommend Zula to anyone looking for good food to share with friends."
