A word from Zona Rosa
Small plate Mexican dining in downtown San Jose"s historic Rose Garden.

Our dishes honor the cookery of Mexico with a focus on masa. The cuisine of Zona Rosa is Mexican but with a twist. Executive Chef, Anna Zamora Pizzo takes the components of an authentic Mexican dish and adds modern flavors and fresh seasonal ingredients. Everything is home-made and made from scratch. We hand press our tortillas using fresh, organic corn masa from La Finca.

We strive to be a farm to table kitchen and whenever possible, we use local and organic meats, poultry & produce as well as sustainable seafood sanctioned by Monterey Bay Seafood Watch.

Zona Rosa features wines, beer and coffee from local vendors including J Lohr, Barefoot Coffee, and Russian River Brewing Company.

Diner Reviews
  • "I totally concur with reviews regarding the bad service and the mess of the kitchen staff. The woman seated us was rude, cold, and unprofessional from the start. We were prepared to turn a blind eye until she came back to us 45 mins’ later and asked what we ordered again! She said for some reason the kitchen lost our order ticket and so our food was not being cooked and now we needed to order again so that the kitchen could start to prepare our meal. Are you kidding me? So we were sitting there waiting for 45 mins for nothing?! What makes the situation even worse is her attitude. Throughout the whole process, she didn’t show the slightest hint of apology. We finally cancelled our order and left for another restaurant."

  • "……..something different. so glad we did! my friend & i decided to leave our comfort zone and order something besides our usual that we get at other mexican restaurants. neither of us was disappointed and we will definitely eat here again….. this is not your typical mexican restaurant so don't expect the food to be prepared the same as you would get it at other places…….the chef's combination and spin on dishes is absolutely delicious!"

  • "The food is fabulous - authentic Mexican. Small and intimate setting. Very popular - make reservations. Friendly staff."

  • "I have confidence Zona Rosa will improve with time. They do so many things well, just need a little polishing. Enchilada sauce was watery & lacking flavor. Tortilla chips greasy this visit & have had them before @ ZR when they were amazingly crispy& greaseless so you have the potential to do them better than anybody. Perhaps fry oil needed changing? Plaintains too green & need to rethink price of drinks. $7 chevelas is HIGH, ditto for margarita or anything on the rocks in that short stem martini glass, Love the look but too small for $9. All ice after two sips. Want ZR to succeed, So many things you do well. I want to come back! Beef tacos, guacamole, shrimp tacos-all.excellent & also the chips when they are spot on. Keep on improving!!"

  • "What a wonderful new find for us -- The food was superb, great flavors. Can't wait to go back to try more items on the menu."

  • "Food is always fantastic at Zona Rosa San Jose. I love introducing out-of-town guests to the fresh food at ZR. I've tried almost everything on the menu and it's all delicious!"

  • "Love the fresh ingredients and innovative approach to food from South of the Border, You must get the chips and sauces that are so yummy. This is not a place for a large group - the seating is tight and some of the chairs are not the most comfortable. I would come back here again and again and recommend getting there for the beginning of the dinner service."

  • "This restaurant is tiny, but their food is huge & speaks for itself. Their drinks are also tasty, and the service was quite good. Definitely an up-and-coming spot on the Alameda!"

  • "We've been 2 times and we love this place. The food is authentic, while being organic and fresh! The one little thing is that the chips could be way less shiny with grease, please!"

  • "This might be one of the smallest restaurants I have ever walked into. I highly recommend making a reservation -- it fills up quickly. Everything we had for dinner was absolutely amazing. We had the bacon guacamole, duck enchiladas, and salmon tacos. All were amazing. It is a little tight in the restaurant, but the staff is incredibly friendly. I can't wait to come back and try more goodies!!"

  • "This tiny restaurant is one you could drive by for years and not even notice, but I'm so glad a colleague of mine suggested we meet there for lunch. The food is authentic and very good - they take the time to prepare very tasty, attractively presented meals. Give it a try, I bet you'll be glad you did!"

  • "Small neighborhood gem. The food - wow! Never had better mexican food. The cocktails were excellent too. Food presentation was just as good the the food. The restaurant is rather small - 8-10 tables. They are scrunched together, so not a good place for a romantic dinner. We were out in an hour. Overall, very excellent food, but expensive."

  • "Love this place. After being unable to get in for dinner on a few nights, now I just go at lunch when it's much quieter. Usually order something different each time, and have yet to be disappointed. Very small place, so get there early!"

  • "Lots of interesting ingredient combinations that resulted in delicious plates. Try the fried avocados, the chips with 3 salsa, duck enchiladas in mole, Stuffed Chile Relleno, and Tacos with Chorizo and Mole sauce. Plenty more to try out on our next visit. Small dining room is a little cozy, but the service was very attentive."

  • "We have eaten at Zona Rosa four times in the past 5-6 months. The food has been consistently very good to excellent each time. However, the wait-staff service and the execution of our meals by the kitchen during our three most recent meals have been dreadful. The four of us each order a single main dish. The kitchen can't seem to get four plates of food prepared for one table at the same time. After a long wait for the meals to arrive, the plates come out one or two at a time. Invariably, it's our (by now ravenous and very cranky) kids who get theirs' last. Time between the first person being served and the last can be up to 20 min. Also the wait staff have twice (in four visits) messed up our orders, causing even longer delays."

  • "My husband and I took a friend to lunch right after we picked her up a nearby Diridon Station. We made a reservation in advance which was a plus. All three of us had different dishes and were equally delighted by the fresh ingredients and artful presentation."

  • "Great food! Very nice experience! I would highly recommend!"

  • "They make extremely tasty dishes which are different than the usual items you find at mexican restaurants. Everyone should experience their Mexican fusion cooking."

  • "First of all, I love the food at Zona Rosa. The sauces and masa are to die for and the quality of the meats superb. However, they really, really need to get their act together on the service end. They get one point for seating us right away and setting the table, but they didn't bring menus until after we asked. Also, the waitress was having trouble uncorking our wine and told me it was because I was making her nervous. I would totally recommend this restaurant (and I always do) but I do warn friends that the service is hit or miss."

  • "The place is so small it's difficult to even get to your table. The restroom is in the back through the kitchen. Because the dining room is so small and they are maximizing the number of tables, the noise level is very high. It was hard to have a conversation. The decor is charming and it could be nice spot for a romantic dinner except for the feeling of being crammed in and not being able to hear. The food was great. I'd like to go back, but my husband didn't enjoy the meal because we couldn't really chat. We also had to wait 15 minutes for our reservation."

  • "Was in the mood for Mexican food. We were in the area. Read the reviews and thought we'd give it a try and so happy we did. Although, it only really seats 32 people at a time. The food and the atmosphere was a pleasant surprise. You get nice portions with an awesome taste. We are so happy to have a great little Mexican food place to go. Do give a try you won't be disappointed."

  • "Salsa appetizers, jalepeno margaritas, duck, stuffed pepper, all perfect. Service was very rushed this time. We had barely finished and server was trying to get us out the door...and we had only been there 45 minutes. Most restaurants allow at least 1 hour to 1 hour and a half for a table. Assume it was isolated event."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "This a very noisy place due to the small interior so conversation was difficult. Food was very good, very fresh & innovative. Our service though was rushed, we were asked if we wanted dessert midway through eating our main course. We said we were still eating & not sure about dessert yet. Then when we had finished that course the bill was presented as soon as the dishes were taken away & we were not asked if we had decided to have dessert or if we wanted anything else. it felt like we were being rushed out as they wanted the table."

  • "Just a great place for really good food. Tastes fresh."
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "Enjoyed the food. A bit too pricey. $11 for 3 tortillas and about 3oz of salsa with cheese on top is a tad bit over rated for me. Did not appreciate being asked to leave few minutes after we paid our $160 ticket! The waitress kept forgetting our order and did not bring everything we ordered. Will not be returning."

  • "We enjoyed our food - every dish had several layers of flavor with unexpected ingredients. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some unique Mexican food. The restaurant is very popular and very small. We had 6:30 reservations on a Friday night and the hostess looked surprised when we walked in and said we had a reservation. We noticed that she did that with everyone - kind of like she didn't know that her restaurant actually took reservations. We were seated at 7 - 30 minutes late."

  • "We had decided to find someplace to eat before an evening flight out of San Jose. Our daughter recommended this place. The food was fresh and really delicious. We ate inside. It is small but very nice looking and there are a few tables outside. I had the salmon tacos and loved them."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "The restaurant is tiny. We chose to sit outside and we were comfortable. Portions are smaller than most other restaurants. My friend and I shared three plates for brunch and loved all of our selections. Our favorite was the Chorizo frittata dish. The service was a little slow but we did not mind as we were people watching and enjoying the nice weather."

  • "Great food, very creative and flavorful. Not your standard Mexican fare. The sangria was very good but pricey at $32 for a carafe. It's a very small place (no more than ten tables), so reservations recommended."

  • "i read in one of the reviews that it would be best to attend there after noon, so i made a reservation at 2 p.m. on a friday afternoon. Parking was difficult to find. First impression of the restaurant: it appeared small, but very cozy for small groups of customers. My boyfriend thought it was a garden shop for the overflow of plants on the outside and the rose emblem on the window for the restaurant. Food was delicious, but heavily overpriced. Good customer service. I don't think a reservation is needed unless you want that open dining table points. It was just me and my boyfriend at 2 on a friday afternoon...no one else there. Music was blasting loud, but i guess that is better than the associates listening in on our conversation."

  • "Great restaurant! Not your typical Mexican fare. It's fresh, organic food, artfully presented. It's dry small and quite popular, so consider making a reservation."

  • "Zona Rosa is tiny so reservations for dinner are important and are also helpful at lunch. The food is delicious and sophisticated...reminds me of Mexico City. Interesting mixed drinks and good sangria. I've been there for lunch and dinner and will definitely go back again."

  • "This restaurant is too tiny! The food is good, not great, and with the confines of such a small space, I wouldn't recommend it."

  • "Love Zona Rosa in San Jose. The food is fantastic and service is great!"

  • "A wonderful new addition to the community, it offers a refreshing (and authentic) take on traditional cuisine, without the factory-produced food you find in so many so-called restaurants. The location has a great ambiance, wonderful decor, and great service. Highly recommended!"

  • "My family and I have eaten at Zona Rosa for lunch on three occasions. The food has always been terrific - innovative and varied menu with many traditional Mexican elements that have been respectfully updated. The service has been inconsistent. We almost didn't go back after our last experience, in which the waiter forgot parts of our order and was unable to clearly communicate our requests (one of our kids is gluten- and lactose-intolerant) to the kitchen staff. This time, the service was better. However, our meals still came out at different times. Two plates came out together at first, one was delayed by about 5 min and the other delayed by another 5 min or so. The wait staff and kitchen need to better coordination."

  • "Welcome into a warm and inviting kitchen that extends out a few more feet to accommodate some hearty tables for new friends. The staff bustles about much like a large family would in a busy kitchen before a great celebration. The celebration is the tastes that will find their way to your table. The drinks were an explosion of flavor, the sopa was delectable and the dining experience was one I will repeat again and again."

  • "The pork was delicious - tender, not overcooked. Portion was large enough to make two meals of it. The homemade tortillas had a great flavor. Pork chile relleno also outstanding. The guacamole was only interesting. Mexican fusion? Don't expect to be seated at your reservation time. We had to wait over a half hour beyond our 7:30 reservation. The people before us had to wait 45 minutes. Service was very slow because they were also making large to go orders in this tiny restaurant (I counted 22 chairs total). The most disappointing part was the sticky table. Even though the server wiped it off, it was still very sticky. So was my fork. I asked for another but spread out my napkin to put it down on the table."

  • "Tiny place and very busy for good reason; excellent food!! Diverse menu , not Cal or Tex mex but more like Mexico. Only down side for me was that I found the mole to be too sweet."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "The food especially the appetizers were outstanding. We were a party of two and unfortunately the tables for two are squeezed behind the front door so you had everyone passing your table and the constant cold and hot and sound when deoor opened and closed. Would go back with larger party because food brings you back. Drinks were also good but glares could be a bit bigger"
