A word from Zona Rosa
Small plate Mexican dining in downtown San Jose"s historic Rose Garden.

Our dishes honor the cookery of Mexico with a focus on masa. The cuisine of Zona Rosa is Mexican but with a twist. Executive Chef, Anna Zamora Pizzo takes the components of an authentic Mexican dish and adds modern flavors and fresh seasonal ingredients. Everything is home-made and made from scratch. We hand press our tortillas using fresh, organic corn masa from La Finca.

We strive to be a farm to table kitchen and whenever possible, we use local and organic meats, poultry & produce as well as sustainable seafood sanctioned by Monterey Bay Seafood Watch.

Zona Rosa features wines, beer and coffee from local vendors including J Lohr, Barefoot Coffee, and Russian River Brewing Company.

  • "Usually, in Mexican restaurants you get the same....glop. Zona Rosa has everything very fresh with subtle but unusual ingredients. The Cesar salad with pepitias, Mexican cheese, roasted corn and great dressing is a must. Chicken enchiladas are great, as well as the tacos. The nacho starters have meat on them, which I don't care for. The waitress was very attentive and friendly, and we loved sitting outside, although you're right on a busy street so it's a little noisy. Margaritias are great! I've been here three times and love it."

  • "If you like Mexican food, but are underwhelmed by the slew of lackluster Texmex restaurants in the area, check out Zona Rosa. You won't be disappointed! They have a fantastic and diverse menu (drinks too!). The staff at Zona Rosa are great as well - they always remember you and provide recommendations. On our last visit, we had a friend that was wanting a low carb alternative and the staff provide generous off-menu options. Be sure not to miss the Ahi tuna plate and scallop tacos, you won't want to share! The venue is smaller than expected (which makes it more intimate), so be sure to make a reservation on OpenTable!"

  • "OK, the food is very creative and tasty. The restaurant is very enjoyable in decor and ambiance. Service a little slow and somewhat unprofessional but acceptable. Our big surprise was the $175 tab (for 4 people) for what is essentially a taqueria. Yes, we had two rounds of drinks (because the food was slow in arriving...), appetizers, and one shared dessert, but the main courses were two small tacos each. It just felt a little too expensive for what it was."

  • "We waited 30 minutes for our table after having checked in 10 minutes before our 7:00 PM reservation which she tried to tell me was 7:15 on her computer which can not be true. The place is small with no room for error but the hostess did not seem to have the system figured out. She was seating walk-ins ahead of people with reservations. They tried to make it up by giving us a free appetizer but still did not stop us from being annoyed."

They serve an upscale version of the classics that displays real talent in the kitchen, and a deep understanding of the ingredients. Not inexpensive, crowded, and sometimes noisy, but worth it.   • "I've been going to Zona Rosa for about two years now, and it's a great dining experience every time I visit. The staff is warm and friendly--just what you might expect from a small family business with a core group of regulars. The quarters are a tight fit at peak dining hours, but I usually go right when they open at lunch for 30 minutes of private dining with my guests. What I love the most about their dishes is the emphasis on using healthy, natural ingredients--no lard on the menu here. My favorite dishes are the "Sopa del Dia" and salmon tacos. Most dishes are gourmet-style (small), but these two fill me up. Their guacamole is also a winner! I'd highly recommend Zona Rosa to anyone looking for a tasty Mexican food place in San Jose."

  • "Zona is a surprise of a gem. The decor/ambiance is quality. I like the water served in vintage tequila bottles, the flowers, and how quaint the place is. I really enjoy the food, notably the guacamole with bacon and pistachios. The Ahi appetizer is delicious. The only minor issue was that the steak taco was oily, or greasy, it dripped down my hand. But-- the flavors are spot on. Portions are perfect. Fresh, in season ingredients. I'll come again!"

  • "Zona Rosa had been on my list of restaurants to check out. Went with a friend for lunch. The guacamole with homemade chips was a great way to begin. Who can resist guacamole with large chunks of crisped bacon and roasted pistachios? We each ordered tacos which come two to a plate and then swapped one with each other. The salmon tacos were amazing. The mixture of spices and ample portion of salmon will bring us back to Zona Rosa and left us wanting to try the many other options on the menu. It was hard to choose. The scallop tacos were also a treat. Lightly battered and sweet and a nice complement to the more bold spices of the salmon taco. I ordered a chile relleno to go. This is not your ordinary battered and fried relleno. Foodie heaven!"

  • "I love Mexican food... and I love creative chefs. Zona Rosa is a combination of those- from the guacamole with bacon and pistachios, to the unbelievable carrot soup, to the chile relleno that was unlike any other chile relleno I've ever had... the handmade tortillas were to die for. And the whole thing was enhanced by the jalapeno margaritas. Its a tiny little place, so you are pretty close to the table next to you, but we didn't mind. The staff was very friendly and helpful with our choices - I wanted to try everything, so she helped us narrow it down. We'll definitely be back."

  • "I have never liked Mexican food, even though I lived in Texas for 15 years. This restaurant changed my mind completely. They have so many complexities in their flavor profiles. Every dish is prepared with the kind of care and attention to detail you would expect if you were the only one they were cooking for. Portions are generous. I cannot wait until the next time I get to go there! Do not miss the Rancho Gordo heirloom beans, the nachos with mole sauce and carnitas, the amazing guacamole with bacon and pistachio nuts, or the pumpkin fritters with ice cream (if you can still hold another bite)."

  • "I absolutely love this place. The food is phenomenal and creative. Everything that we have tried on the menu is really good. The deep fried avocado.... mmmmmm :) I asked the server to recommend a cocktail and I had the Jonathan (or something like that) and it was one of the best drinks I have had. I'm trying to stay away from carbs so had the Caesar salad with skirt steak and that was really good. It totally exceeded my expectations for something like that. My husband had the appetizer nachos as his dinner and ended up taking half of it home because they were so generous with the portion. The only reason this place doesn't get five stars is because it is *really* loud and the service can be fairly slow. But, the food is worth it."

  • "Food was good overall, although pricey and small portions. Appetizer I had was described as "Chicken Mole Tostadas", however there was only a single tiny tostada. Besides that, I was satisfied with my meal but the service was severely lacking. I came during Restaurant Week, but was not shown the special prix fixe menu until I specifically asked for it. I noticed diners around me were not being told about the prix fixe, so I assume management was trying to hide it. It was obvious that they were trying to rush me through my meal by trying to clear my plates while I was still eating. Server asked, "Are you ready for dessert?", and then put the dessert down without waiting for an answer, plus I was still finishing my entree!"

It is a tiny space popular with the neighborhood crowd, so don't count on getting a table unless you have reservations, and even then you may be crammed into a small space. Within 20 seconds my attitude shifted from "let's just get through this as quickly as possible" to wow let's soak this all in!! Super charming decor, quick, attentive service even at 100% capacity on a Sayurday night. Sample the chips and salsa A- , panko crusted avocado A, and Chimmichiri tacos with fingerlings inside served with tast rancho gordo beans, A. The Palomaesque was a tasty tequila based drink with grapefruit and a spicy rim B+. Music made the night and the whole experience was truly authentic. No corner cutting at Zona Rosa. A lovely evening. A+ Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice night out and great authenticity!"

It's a small little place but the food is delicious with its own unique touches which makes it very different from the usual Mexican food. The servers are very friendly and helpful.   • "This place is fabulous! Perfectly prepared, authentic mexican cuisine. If you're looking for huge portions of mediocre food, go the Chevys. We started with the guac dressed with pistachios with fresh chips.... so good. For dinner I had the chili relleno stuffed with pork and chorizo - it was to die for, my friend had the blue corn enchiladas which she also said were delicious."
