Small plate Mexican dining in downtown San Jose"s historic Rose Garden.

Our dishes honor the cookery of Mexico with a focus on masa. The cuisine of Zona Rosa is Mexican but with a twist. Executive Chef, Anna Zamora Pizzo takes the components of an authentic Mexican dish and adds modern flavors and fresh seasonal ingredients. Everything is home-made and made from scratch. We hand press our tortillas using fresh, organic corn masa from La Finca.

We strive to be a farm to table kitchen and whenever possible, we use local and organic meats, poultry & produce as well as sustainable seafood sanctioned by Monterey Bay Seafood Watch.

Zona Rosa features wines, beer and coffee from local vendors including J Lohr, Barefoot Coffee, and Russian River Brewing Company.

  • "We waited 30 minutes for our table after having checked in 10 minutes before our 7:00 PM reservation which she tried to tell me was 7:15 on her computer which can not be true. The place is small with no room for error but the hostess did not seem to have the system figured out. She was seating walk-ins ahead of people with reservations. They tried to make it up by giving us a free appetizer but still did not stop us from being annoyed."

They serve an upscale version of the classics that displays real talent in the kitchen, and a deep understanding of the ingredients. Not inexpensive, crowded, and sometimes noisy, but worth it. A real gem."

  • "Raw tortillas in the difficult to eat enchilada bowl. Salty salad- even the replacement! Salty, oily chips. Good idea, awful food. To top it off it was a $74.00 bill for brunch! Hours later I continued to taste the salt in my mouth. So disappointing :0("

  • "I've been going to Zona Rosa for about two years now, and it's a great dining experience every time I visit. The staff is warm and friendly--just what you might expect from a small family business with a core group of regulars. The quarters are a tight fit at peak dining hours, but I usually go right when they open at lunch for 30 minutes of private dining with my guests. What I love the most about their dishes is the emphasis on using healthy, natural ingredients--no lard on the menu here. My favorite dishes are the "Sopa del Dia" and salmon tacos. Most dishes are gourmet-style (small), but these two fill me up. Their guacamole is also a winner! I'd highly recommend Zona Rosa to anyone looking for a tasty Mexican food place in San Jose."

  • "Zona is a surprise of a gem. The decor/ambiance is quality. I like the water served in vintage tequila bottles, the flowers, and how quaint the place is. I really enjoy the food, notably the guacamole with bacon and pistachios. The Ahi appetizer is delicious. The only minor issue was that the steak taco was oily, or greasy, it dripped down my hand. But-- the flavors are spot on. Portions are perfect. Fresh, in season ingredients. I'll come again!"

  • "Zona Rosa had been on my list of restaurants to check out. Went with a friend for lunch. The guacamole with homemade chips was a great way to begin. Who can resist guacamole with large chunks of crisped bacon and roasted pistachios? We each ordered tacos which come two to a plate and then swapped one with each other. The salmon tacos were amazing. The mixture of spices and ample portion of salmon will bring us back to Zona Rosa and left us wanting to try the many other options on the menu. It was hard to choose. The scallop tacos were also a treat. Lightly battered and sweet and a nice complement to the more bold spices of the salmon taco. I ordered a chile relleno to go. This is not your ordinary battered and fried relleno. Foodie heaven!"

  • "I love Mexican food... and I love creative chefs. Zona Rosa is a combination of those- from the guacamole with bacon and pistachios, to the unbelievable carrot soup, to the chile relleno that was unlike any other chile relleno I've ever had... the handmade tortillas were to die for. And the whole thing was enhanced by the jalapeno margaritas. Its a tiny little place, so you are pretty close to the table next to you, but we didn't mind. The staff was very friendly and helpful with our choices - I wanted to try everything, so she helped us narrow it down. We'll definitely be back."

  • "I have never liked Mexican food, even though I lived in Texas for 15 years. This restaurant changed my mind completely. They have so many complexities in their flavor profiles. Every dish is prepared with the kind of care and attention to detail you would expect if you were the only one they were cooking for. Portions are generous. I cannot wait until the next time I get to go there! Do not miss the Rancho Gordo heirloom beans, the nachos with mole sauce and carnitas, the amazing guacamole with bacon and pistachio nuts, or the pumpkin fritters with ice cream (if you can still hold another bite)."

  • "What a gem! The food is fabulous, and everyone that worked there was happy and nice. Their tortillas are hand pressed and freshly cooked, and all their meats are humanely raised. We went on a Saturday and enjoyed their brunch items as well as tacos and quesadillas. I'm eating gluten free, and they were very accommodating. We can't wait to go back!"

  • "Food was good overall, although pricey and small portions. Appetizer I had was described as "Chicken Mole Tostadas", however there was only a single tiny tostada. Besides that, I was satisfied with my meal but the service was severely lacking. I came during Restaurant Week, but was not shown the special prix fixe menu until I specifically asked for it. I noticed diners around me were not being told about the prix fixe, so I assume management was trying to hide it. It was obvious that they were trying to rush me through my meal by trying to clear my plates while I was still eating. Server asked, "Are you ready for dessert?", and then put the dessert down without waiting for an answer, plus I was still finishing my entree!"

  • "I absolutely love this place. The food is phenomenal and creative. Everything that we have tried on the menu is really good. The deep fried avocado.... mmmmmm :) I asked the server to recommend a cocktail and I had the Jonathan (or something like that) and it was one of the best drinks I have had. I'm trying to stay away from carbs so had the Caesar salad with skirt steak and that was really good. It totally exceeded my expectations for something like that. My husband had the appetizer nachos as his dinner and ended up taking half of it home because they were so generous with the portion. The only reason this place doesn't get five stars is because it is *really* loud and the service can be fairly slow. But, the food is worth it."

It is a tiny space popular with the neighborhood crowd, so don't count on getting a table unless you have reservations, and even then you may be crammed into a small space.   • "Made a last minute reservation and were sat outside with the mariachi band and super cramped tables. Within 20 seconds my attitude shifted from "let's just get through this as quickly as possible" to wow let's soak this all in!! Super charming decor, quick, attentive service even at 100% capacity on a Sayurday night. Sample the chips and salsa A- , panko crusted avocado A, and Chimmichiri tacos with fingerlings inside served with tast rancho gordo beans, A. The Palomaesque was a tasty tequila based drink with grapefruit and a spicy rim B+. Music made the night and the whole experience was truly authentic. No corner cutting at Zona Rosa. A lovely evening. A+ Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice night out and great authenticity!"

It's a small little place but the food is delicious with its own unique touches which makes it very different from the usual Mexican food. The servers are very friendly and helpful.   • "Some Yelp reviews complained about poor service at Zona Rosa, but we went for an early (6 p.m.) dinner on a weekday and had great service. The restaurant is small and does get busy, and I wouldn't go without a reservation. Some other Yelp reviews complained about the prices and portions, but the portions were fine--just human-sized, instead of super-sized--and the prices were fine for high-quality ingredients and preparation. My salmon tacos and my husband's steak were delicious. We had an appetizer, drinks, two entrees, a side-dish, and dessert, and paid under $100 including tip. We also took home leftovers. Not a budget dining experience and might not be best for small children, but I would go there again for a special occasion. "

  • "This place is fabulous! Perfectly prepared, authentic mexican cuisine. If you're looking for huge portions of mediocre food, go the Chevys. We started with the guac dressed with pistachios with fresh chips.... so good. For dinner I had the chili relleno stuffed with pork and chorizo - it was to die for, my friend had the blue corn enchiladas which she also said were delicious."

  • "A vert pleasant first experience that exceeded expectations. We were there for lunch on Easter and the service was outstanding. Their horchata ice cream desert is fabulous. My only complaint is that they do not have regular coffee. I enjoyed their coffee to a point, but I prefer black coffee and their coffee is sweetened with a natural fruit, can't remember what and flavored with cinnamon. The desert cried out for some black coffee, but it was all in all a great meal and experience. "

  • "This time, the restaurant, for being as tiny as it is, was excessively loud. Definitely not a great place for having a conversation. The food this visit was merely ok. The tempura prawn tacos could have used a sauce, as the vinaigrette on the cabbage wasn't sufficient enough to add some much needed flavor and seasoning. The chicken mole enchiladas were very, very bland. Margaritas were still outstanding, the guacamole appetizer was just ok. The bacon should probably be chopped up more and the guac itself tasted like it was just mashed avocados with a little salt. Didn't taste anything else in it."

  • "I've been to this restaurant several times for dinner and the food is usually good and service is usually great. Our servers keep telling us to make it to brunch so we finally tried it. I have to say I was very disappointed. The service was so slow and our server ended up giving our food to the table next to us which made the wait even longer. They took the food back to the kitchen and who knows if they actually remade the food or just put the same thing in the microwave and reserved it to us but my dish came out warm and my husband sandwich looked dried out. For $50, we could have gone to a Chevy's and had more bang for our buck. So disappointed!!"

  • "I totally concur with reviews regarding the bad service and the mess of the kitchen staff. The woman seated us was rude, cold, and unprofessional from the start. We were prepared to turn a blind eye until she came back to us 45 mins’ later and asked what we ordered again! She said for some reason the kitchen lost our order ticket and so our food was not being cooked and now we needed to order again so that the kitchen could start to prepare our meal. Are you kidding me? So we were sitting there waiting for 45 mins for nothing?! What makes the situation even worse is her attitude. Throughout the whole process, she didn’t show the slightest hint of apology. We finally cancelled our order and left for another restaurant."

  • "I have confidence Zona Rosa will improve with time. They do so many things well, just need a little polishing. Enchilada sauce was watery & lacking flavor. Tortilla chips greasy this visit & have had them before @ ZR when they were amazingly crispy& greaseless so you have the potential to do them better than anybody. Perhaps fry oil needed changing? Plaintains too green & need to rethink price of drinks. $7 chevelas is HIGH, ditto for margarita or anything on the rocks in that short stem martini glass, Love the look but too small for $9. All ice after two sips. Want ZR to succeed, So many things you do well. I want to come back! Beef tacos, guacamole, shrimp tacos-all.excellent & also the chips when they are spot on. Keep on improving!!"
