Diner Reviews
  • "The service was not good, definitely not the "Plaza" feel from most other restaurants down there. We were sat at our table and witnessed many servers standing at the till as opposed to visiting our table. The food was okay. We will not be back as the service was poor and the food was not that great. I would not recommend."

  • "Service was ok, drinks were good but frozen machine wasn't working. Main reason for choosing Zocalo."

  • "My only issue is a personal one the dish I had was the Mexico city sampler everything was covered in a lot of sauces and hard to tell what was what"

  • "This is not like any other Mexican restaurant you've likely been to! This is high end, yet affordable healthy and delicious food. My chicken had such a flavorful sauce with "terrorized" carrots on the side. Fabulous!! We didn't try any of the tequilas, but it appears this is the place for tequila connoisseurs."

  • "The atmosphere at this spot is great. However the food was cold and flavor was below average. The drinks were nothing special at all, even though they rave about their margaritas. We were there for a 40th bday and it was not acknowledged."

  • "This was our first experience at Zocala. We tried the Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers as an appetizer followed by the Empanadas for me and the Chorizo Meatloaf for my husband. Everything was well prepared, nicely presented, and very good. We especially enjoyed the Poppers. I thought the Empanadas could have been spicier. A very pleasant meal with good service by Robert. We look forward to dining at Zocala again. We found the decor very pleasant!"

  • "Came here for my birthday dinner and the service was outstanding!! The waitress was knowledgable about the entire I and had amazing drink recommendations!! The food was delicious and the staff interacted with the entire party!"

  • "We've been to Zocalo for lunch previously, but not for dinner. This was a great choice for dinner before we went to the REP that evening. Service was quick, food was delicious, and drinks were strong! For food options, we started with the guacamole (traditional) and were pleased with the flavor - seemed to come out of the kitchen quickly which makes me think it was previously prepared for service & not exactly "fresh." For dinner, I chose an appetizer - the chicken nachos, while my husband had the mahi mahi. Both were good, I took a bite of his fish - good, but not what I wanted but he was very pleased. My nachos were outstanding! Next time we'll sit in the bar area for happy hour specials (price reductions on same items). Very good time!"

  • "Had a great time and there are plenty of adventurous and more common choices. I got the lobster tacos, and thy were amazing. The mexican mule drink was also delicious."

  • "Was on a date night with my wife seated next to table of 5 where there was food all over the floor and in a corner where someone had to put their bottom over our table to even get out of the booth. Waiters were huddled in a corner making jokes and laughing and no one ever waited on us. We waited for 15-20 minutes, then walked across the street to Capital Grille. Capital Grille treated us the way we like to be treated and is much more service oriented and cares about their customers. Would never go back."

  • "The restaurant was understaffed for such a busy weekend. It was beautiful weather (brings people to the Plaza) and it was Big XII Tournament weekend (hotels were packed) and yet the manager had servers taking over 6 tables, there was only one bartender and the manager was taking tables rather than working the restaurant so he could make some money. There wasn't a hostess that we saw either. HOWEVER, once we were sat and served, everything was 'ok'. Our server was rocking it."

  • "The food was outstanding. I had the Mexico City Sampler and it was amazing. The seafood enchiladas also were out of this world."

  • "I'm Mexican (born and raised in Mexico) so I wasn't expecting much for the restaurant. Most restaurants that claim to be Mexican end up having "Taco-Bell" style cuisine. Not this one! Of course the food has been a little americanized but I love the somewhat authentic names they have like pozole, carne asada, chiles rellenos, etc. Everything is much more expensive than if I bought it in Mexico, the carne asada for example was $21, with $21 I could buy 3-4 pounds of beef to slap on the barbecue. The guacamole is $7, with $7 I could make 2 pounds of guacamole, etc, etc. The carne asada was really good though, I just wish they gave you some tortillas along with it to make some tacos. Barbacoa tacos are good as well, but you only get 3 :("

  • "What a great dining experience - a beautiful restaurant, lively ambience, top notch service and outstanding food! This is definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city for all around dining. My date and I had the filet and the duck and both were cooked perfectly, will definitely go back for those - and a good value compared to other Plaza restaurants. And what a great Latin based wine list, I didn't expect such thoughtful selections at a Mexican restaurant (I usually have the margaritas) and again, at a good value compared to other wine lists in the area. Thank you, we'll be back soon!"

  • "Great cocktails and appetizers. Dinner was fair, would go back for a Happy Hour as their infused vodka and tequila drinks are fabulous. Would not have dinner there again. Fair fish tacos and fair enchiladas. Great lobster quesadillas!"

  • "I didn't realize i left them a note saying "late valentines dinner" when we showed up our table had roses waiting for us. My wife also mentioned "these are the best fish tacos i had" We loved the food and service that was provided to us. They pay attention to every details to make your experience better."

  • "I have ate at Zocalo a couple times now. Though I like the idea of the menu that features many traditional Mexican dishes with a unique twist to each, I found both Carne Asada and the Beef and Chicken Tacos a bit underwhelming. There is nothing poor about Zocalo and it is a nice setting, but overall, I feel you could do better for the money. Good overall, but not great."

  • "I love this restaurant and it is definitely one of my favorite in Kansas City. I first booked a party go 10 about 2 years ago and up to this day I am satisfy with everything! Great food, drinks, staff, great location and prices are reasonable!"

  • "Good food and service; however, way TOO LOUD for conversation. Our group had to scream at one another to hear the closest person. We'd try the venue again but not in the bar area. The extended happy hour was appealing; however, we were sorry those prices did not carry over to the dining room. We chose to eat at the bar which ended up being a bad choice because we could not hear one another."

  • "We went to Zocalo with some friends. We had been there before and decided to give the Restaurant Week menu a try. It had quite a few more options than most of the other restaurants participating in Restaurant Week. The restaurant was a bit slow since it was cold and windy AND Sunday night, but we really enjoyed the quiet. Our waiter Willie was very attentive. Two of us ordered off the Restaurant week menu and shared the goodies with our partners. Everything was delicious. The food isn't drenched in cheese or fried. It's fresh and flavorful. I like my food really, really hot, so my only feedback would be to get the main courses out to the table a little more quickly. Although the tortilla soup did come out piping hot. A+ for that!"

  • "This was our first visit. Not your typical Mexican restaurant. I had the chorizo meatloaf and it was outstanding! My wife had the enchilada sampler which she said was fantastic. The chips and salsa wasn't your typical appetizer. They have 5 or 6 salsa that you choose 3 of. They were fresh and very good. We'll definitely return! The only complaint was they seated a family with young children next to us and one of the kids kicked the seat behind my brother-in-law which was really annoying. There were several options where this family could have been seated that would have avoided this situation. Otherwise a wonderful place to dine!"

  • "Ihighly recommend the cerviche--tangy and sweat and nicely diced to combine the flavors; the scallops were wonderfully prepared; special substitution request honored with no fuss or pushback and the chocolate dessert was sinfully delicious and enough for two."

  • "We dined there during resturant week 2014. Our party of 8 was treated well by the staff. The Mushroom Fudio, scallop ceveiche, diver scallops, flank steak, tortilla soup, house salad were all wonderful. We will return."

  • "We went here for restaurant week and had dinner. My wife had Bacon and Blue Cheese Guacamole, Zocalo Salad & Adobo-Seared Diver Scallops. I had Zocalo Salad, Mexican City Enchilada Sampler, & Pumpkin Bread Pudding. All and all the food was yummy but there really wasn't anything that just calls me to come back. Our waitress Ida was very knowledgeable and took good care of us. We love Mexican/ southwest food but Zocalo just didn't push us to a new level by any means. I think it is good to try once but not so sure its a place to go back to over and over. There are much better Mexican restaurant's in KC for a lot less money."

  • "There are some great dishes at Zocalo, it's not the typical Tex-Mex Mexican food you find in Kansas City. If you are into tequila, they have a fantastic list. Even thought I don't care about the tequila I'm always happy after dining at Zocalo, and in the warmer months if you are lucky you may sit outside either in back with the fire pits or along the sidewalk in front. Brunch is good too but our favorite time at Zocalo is dinner. They have excellent ahi tuna nachos (I know high calorie - definitely worth it) also a few different enchiladas and some tasty seafood dishes. One of my favorite things are the side dishes which include terrorized carrots and the very tasty jalapeno polenta."

  • "This was a surprise "snow day" lunch for us and a wonderful surprise find in the Plaza. The trio of salsas were unique and excellently prepared. I felt the sandwich I had was a bit on the dry side and less cheesy as advertised, but my husband loved his meal. I saw the fish tacos walk by and was super jealous of them!! Next time, that's what I'll have. Certainly want to go again, so we do recommend visiting Zocalo if interested in some great Mexican!"

  • "My friend's and I were in Kansas City for a Birthday. After learning the shopping stores closed early, we made our way to Zocalo for happy hour before our dinner reservation. Jake, our waiter, took extra good care of us. He was very hospitable and welcoming. He made fabulous recommendations for appetizers and made sure we were well taken care of. Our experience was even better because of the great service."

  • "It was my husband's birthday so we thought we'd try a new place. It was also Restaurant Week, so we were looking forward to some great food. It didn't start off so well. Although we had reservations, we were ushered all the way back to the farthest table in the place, up against the wall, table for two. The restaurant only had about 20 people leaving plenty of tables. We thought that the remaining tables must be reserved but by 45 minutes into our meal, no one was seated at any of those tables. We were never given a Restaurant Week menu and by the time our waiter arrived at our table, we had already chosen our meals. Our waiter was good and the food was good but the evening was overshadowed by our hostess' lack of service."

  • "Zocalo is a wonderful restaurant, but competing in a tough area. It's the sort of place that you would be glad to take friends and family to have a drink and get some excellent "tex-mex" food. If you are familiar with the cuisine then understand that Zocalo takes care to use the freshest ingredients and to not overload food to where it is too "heavy". Fresh jalapenos, incredible salsa, and vibrant colors are a stark contrast to the drab and bland cheese and meet of normal Mexican fare. The restaurant itself is beautiful, if a little modern, but incredibly tasteful and clean. I think the restaurant would do better if they moved to more of a Tapas style of dining, which they have sort of figured out with the way that they structured the menu"
